Organic carbon in bays of the White Sea was studied for the first time in 1987. Bays of various types in the Kandalaksha Gulf and the Onega Gulf were investigated. Concentration of C_org ranged from 3.5 to 9 mg/l. The highest weighted-mean concentration of C_org occurred in shallow bays of the Onega Gulf (Suma Bay - 6.17 mg/l, Kolezhma Bay - 5.25 mg/1); slightly lower levels occurred in the Soroka Bay (4.85 mg/l) and Kem' Bay (4.78 mg/l). The lowest concentrations were in deep bays of the Kandalaksha Gulf (Chupa Bay - 4.35 mg/l, Velikaya Salma Bay - 4.10 mg/l). As a rule C_org concentration decreases with depth in deep-water bays (but increases slightly in the thermocline layer). The key factor governing organic matter concentration in the bays of the Onega Gulf with river runoff is allochthonous terrigenous organic matter, as indicated by negative correlation of C_org with salinity (R=-0.83+/-0.07, p=0.96) and nonsignificant correlation with primary production.

One hundred and sixty core samples were analyzed from Hole 832B to evaluate planktonic foraminiferal datum levels, and to zone and correlate the borehole succession. A total of 32 biostratigraphic events were recognized in the interval from Core 134-832B-59R through 134-832B-73R (702.49 through 846.4 meters below seafloor [mbsf]). These include 17 first appearance datum levels (FAD), 10 last appearance datum levels (LAD), and 5 coiling-change events in trochospiral species. The studied succession has been subdivided into nine planktonic foraminiferal zones (viz. downsequence N.22, N.21, N.20, N.19, N.18, N.17B, N.17A-N.16, N.15, N.8). The zonal index species occur in the expected stratigraphic order for zonal correlation, but some of the zonal boundaries may be diachronous compared to other localities in the western Pacific region. The FAD of Globorotalia (Truncorotalia) truncatulinoides (d' Orbigny) at 714.10 mbsf defines the boundary between the Zone N.22 and N.21; the boundary between Zones N.21 and N.20 at 741.73 mbsf is marked by the FAD of Globorotalia (Truncorotalia) tosaensis Takayanagi and Saito. The lower boundary of Zone N.20 is placed at 747.65 mbsf, based on the FAD of Globorotalia (Truncorotalia) crassaformis s.s. (Galloway and Wissler); the FAD of Sphaeroidinella dehiscens (Parker and Jones) at 756.61 mbsf defines the boundary between Zones N.18 and N.19. The FAD of Globorotalia (Globorotalia) tumida tumida (Brady) at 811.15 mbsf marks the boundary between Zones N.18 and N.17B. The boundary between Zones N.17B and N.17Ais placed at 843.52 mbsf, based on the FAD of Pulleniatina primalis Banner and Blow. A change in depositional conditions occurs at 846.4 mbsf just below the Zone N.17B lower boundary and is marked by the first appearance of abundant planktonic foraminifers in the region. The interval between 849.13 and 856.1 mbsf is placed in undifferentiated Zones N.17A and N.16, based on the rare occurrence of Neogloboquadrina acostaensis (Blow). The sparsely fossiliferous volcanic sandstone unit between 934.19 and 955.67 mbsf is positioned within Zone N.15 based on the presence of Globigerina (Zeaglobigerina) nepenthes Todd and Globigerinoides (Zeaglobigerina) druryi Arkers, and absence of N. acostaensis and Globorotalia (Jenkinsella) siakensis LeRoy. An unconformity between 955.67 and 971.80 mbsf may explain the absence of Zones N.14 through N.9. Basal Zone N.8 is recognized at 971.80 to 1008.60 mbsf by the presence of Globigerinoides sicanus De Stefani and the absence of Praeorbulina and Orbulina spp. The age of the succession between 702.49 and 1008.6 mbsf extends from the latest Pliocene or earliest Pleistocene (Zone N.22) to the earliest middle Miocene (Zone N.8). Among the datum levels evaluated here, the following events are considered to be the most reliable for time correlation in the studied region: the FADs of G. (T.) truncatulinoides, G. (T.) tosaensis, G. (T.) crassaformis, S. dehiscens, G. conglobatus (Brady), G. (G.) tumida tumida, and P. primalis; and the LADs of Globorotalia (Menardella) multicamerata Cushman and Jarvis, and Dentoglobigerina altispira altispira (Cushman and Jarvis). Application of a chronometric scale to part of the succession, suggests that the interval of calcareous sediment between 702.49 and 846.4 mbsf accumulated at about 30 m/m.y.

The main objective of this study was to investigate possible temporal trends of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and mercury in eggs of herring gulls (Larus argentatus), black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla), common guillemots (Uria aalge) and Atlantic puffins (Fratercula arctica) in Northern Norway. Eggs were collected in 1983, 1993 and 2003. Egg concentrations of POPs (PCB congeners IUPAC numbers: CB-28, 74, 66, 101, 99, 110, 149, 118, 153, 105, 141, 138, 187, 128, 156, 157, 180, 170, 194, 206, HCB, alph-HCH, beta-HCH, gamma-HCH, oxychlordane, trans-chlordane, cis-chlordane, trans-nonachlor, cis-nonachlor, p,p'-DDE, o,p'-DDD, p,p'-DDD, o,p'-DDT and p,p'-DDT) and mercury were quantified. Generally, POP levels decreased between 1983 and 2003 in all species. No significant temporal trend in mercury levels was found between 1983 and 2003.

Persistent organochlorine (OC) contaminants (PCBs, DDTs, chlordanes (CHLs), dieldrin, hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), chlorobenzenes (CBzs)) were determined in adipose tissue of 92 polar bears (Ursus maritimus) sampled between 1999 and 2001 in central East Greenland (69°00'N to 74°00'N). OC data were presented from subadults (S: females: <5 years and males: <6 years), adult females (F: >=5 years) and adult males (M: >=6 years). Summed chlorobiphenyl (SumCBs) concentrations (41 congeners including co-eluters), SumCHLs and SumDDTs were the dominant classes of OCs. SumCBs concentrations were found to be 6470, 8240 and 9100 ng/g lipid weight (lw) i subadults, adult females and adult males, respectively. The corresponding figures were: 2010 (S), 2220 (F) and 1710 (M) ng/ g lw for SumCHLs and 462 (S), 462 (F) and 559 (M) ng/g lw for SumDDTs. The dominant CB congeners were CB153 (32.3%), CB180 (21.4%), CB170 (12.2%) and CB138 (11.0%). The metabolite p,p'-DDE (88.2%) dominated the SumDDTs, while oxychlordane was the dominant (57.1%) CHL-related compound. Concentrations of SumCBs, SumCBzs, SumDDTs, mirex and dieldrin were highest in adult males, whereas concentrations of SumHCHs were lower than in adult females but not than those in subadults. Adult females had the lowest concentrations of SumCBzs, mirex and dieldrin. Concentrations of SumCHLs were lowest in adult males, intermediate in subadults and highest in adult females. SumCB, SumHCH and SumCHL concentrations showed high seasonal variability in adult females but remained relatively constant in adult males and subadults. In general, the OC levels in females appeared to be highest in March and lowest in January or September. Concentrations of SumCBzs and dieldrin showed seasonal variability in all three groups, with a maximum in March in adult females. SumCBz concentrations in adult males and subadults of both sexes peaked in April-July, and dieldrin concentrations peaked in April-July in subadults, but not until August in adult males. SumDDT concentrations increased from January to a maximum in April-July for subadults and in August for adults. Temporal trends within the last decade were examined by comparing the present data to the concentrations reported in samples from 1990 from the same region. SumCB, p,p'-DDE and SumHCH concentrations in 1999-2001 were 22.1%, 66.3% and 39.3% lower than the 1990 concentrations, respectively. in contrast, SumCHL and dieldrin concentrations showed differences amongst sex and age groups in the temporal trends, where present concentrations are between 24.4% to 69.3% and 27.0% to 69.0% lower, respectively, relative to the 1990 levels. However, power analysis suggested that firm conclusions could not be drawn regarding the general time trend based on these two sampling periods. The range of half-lives of the various OC classes were estimated to lie between 4.5 and 20.6 years depending on the age and sex groups considered.

In this pilot study, we report on levels of persistent organohalogenated contaminants (OHCs) in hair of polar bears (Ursus maritimus) from East Greenland sampled between 1999 and 2001. To our knowledge, this is the first study on the validation of polar bear hair as a non-invasive matrix representative of concentrations and profiles in internal organs and blood plasma. Because of low sample weights (13-140 mg), only major bioaccumulative OHCs were detected above the limit of quantification: five polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners (CB 99, 138, 153, 170 and 180), one polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congener (BDE 47), oxychlordane, trans-nonachlor and ß-hexachlorocyclohexane. The PCB profile in hair was similar to that of internal tissues (i.e. adipose, liver, brain and blood), with CB 153 and 180 as the major congeners in all matrices. A gender difference was found for concentrations in hair relative to concentrations in internal tissues. Females (n = 6) were found to display negative correlations, while males (n = 5) showed positive correlations, although p-values were not found significant. These negative correlations in females may reflect seasonal OHC mobilisation from periphery adipose tissue due to, for example, lactation and fasting. The lack of significance in most correlations may be due to small sample sizes and seasonal variability of concentrations in soft tissues. Further research with larger sample weights and sizes is therefore necessary to draw more definitive conclusions on the usefulness of hair for biomonitoring OHCs in polar bears and other fur mammals.

Over most of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean a hiatus is present between the lower upper Maastrichtian and lowermost Tertiary deposits; sedimentation resumed ~200 ka (upper zone Pla) after the K-T boundary. Current-bedded volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks at Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Sites 536 and 540, which were previously interpreted as impact-generated megawave deposits of K-T boundary age, are biostratigraphically of pre-K-T boundary age and probably represent turbidite or gravity-How deposits. The top 10 to 20 cm of this deposit at Site 536 contains very rare Micula prinsii, the uppermost Maastrichtian index taxon, as well as low values of Ir (0.6 pbb) and rare Ni-rich spinels. These indicate possible reworking of sediments of K-T boundary age at the hiatus. Absence of continuous sediment accumulation across the K-T boundary in the 16 Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean sections examined prevents their providing evidence of impact-generated megawave deposits in this region. Our study indicates that the most complete trans-K-T stratigraphic records may be found in onshore marine sections of Mexico, Cuba, and Haiti. The stratigraphic records of these areas should be investigated further for evidence of impact deposits.
