The book presents results of comprehensive geological investigations carried out during Cruise 8 of R/V "Vityaz-2" to the western part of the Black Sea in 1984. Systematic studies in the Black Sea during about hundred years have not weakened interest in the sea. Lithological and geochemical studies of sediments in estuarine areas of the Danube and the Kyzyl-Irmak rivers, as well as in adjacent parts of the deep sea and some other areas were the main aims of the cruise. Data on morphological structures of river fans, lithologic and chemical compositions of sediments in the fans and their areal distribution, forms of occurrence of chemical elements, role of organic matter and gases in sedimentation and diagenesis are given and discussed in the book.

A study of distribution of live individuals of benthic foraminifera in sediments of the Sea of Okhotsk and of the Northwestern Basin of the Pacific Ocean shows that they can be present in sediments up to depth of 30 cm and probably can live there for long periods, sometimes forming high concentrations. Living individuals in the subsurface layer often account for more than 50% of total biomass, which varies from 1 to 21 g/m**2 in different morphological structures. The largest biomass values are attained in underwater rises embedded in relatively warm, oxygen-saturated Pacific waters. Minimum total biomass concentrations occur in deep-water depressions where stagnation phenomena are observed. Foraminifera biomass everywhere decreases gradually with increasing depth from the surface of sediments regardless of relief, depth, and nature of sediments.

Feeding patterns of mass herbivorous copepods in upwelling areas are investigated. Daily rations and aspects of their formation are examined in Calanoides carinatus (Benguela upwelling), Calanus pacificus (off the California coast), and Calanus australis (Peru upwelling). Rations were calculated based on gut plant pigment contents obtained at daily stations using laser spectrofluorometry, experimental data on the rate of gut evacuation and data on the carbon/chlorophyll ratio in phytoplankton and particulate matter at the respective stations. When phytoplankton was abundant, diel feeding rhythms were not pronounced and gut pigment level was high during the entire 24-h period. When phytoplankton biomass was low, distinct feeding rhythms were pronounced with a nocturnal maximum. During active upwelling intensive feeding on phytoplankton supports energy (respiration) and plastic (growth, development, reproduction, accumulation of reserves) metabolism of copepods. When upwelling was inactive, the surface part of the population feeds less actively and is able only partially to cover its energy expenditures. The actively growing and reproducing populations of C. pacificus and C. carinatus may consume close to 20% of primary production, whereas the inactive population of C. australis consumed only 0.2% of primary production when upwelling weakened.

According to average grain size parameters (Kd, Kd1) recent sediments from the northern Caspian Sea and the Barents Sea shelf are similar, while sediments from the Norwegian Sea are closer to their counterparts of the World Ocean. Seaward content of subcolloidal (<0.001 mm) size fraction increases against the background of decreasing proportions of coarse- and medium-grained pelite (<0.01 mm) material.

This paper is dedicated to the geochemical studies of two bottom sediment cores that were taken during cruise 28 of the R/V Professor Logachev in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) 16°38'N area in 2006. The chemical compositions of background metalliferous and ore (ore-bearing) carbonate sediments are presented and inter-element correlations are examined. Individual episodes are distinguished in the accumulation history of the ore-bearing and metalliferous sediments on the basis of element factor analysis.

Features of spatial variability of hydrogen sulfide in the northeastern part of the Black Sea are estimated. Some technical aspects of H2S concentration determination in the anoxic zone are discussed: in its upper part at H2S concentration <30 µmol/l, the photometric method is recommended, while for deeper layers the iodometric method should be used. With linearity of vertical distribution of hydrogen sulfide and ammonium taken into account their vertical gradients are estimated as 0.49+/-0.04 µmol/m and 0.19+/-0.06 µmol/m respectively. It is shown that the upper boundary of the H2S layer corresponds to the isopycnal surface with Sigma_t = 16.19+/-0.05 arbitrary units. Special attention is paid to relationship of hydrogen sulfide distribution with hydrophysical features in the region under study, in particular in the coastal zone. It is shown that hydrodynamic conditions control spatial distribution of hydrogen sulfide. On the basis of isopycnal treatment of the H2S field existence of a coastal convergence zone is proved, and peculiarities are recognized of vertical circulation in the main Black Sea gyre and coastal anticyclonic eddies; here hydrogen sulfide serves as a tracer of hydrophysical mixing processes.

During Cruise 54 of R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh macrobenthos of the Novaya Zemlya Trough was studied with use of a Sigsby trawl along a submeridional transect near 75°30'N at depth range from 68 to 362 m. In total 140 species of bottom animals were found. Relative role of taxons was assessed using three parameters: abundance, biomass, and energy flow. Similarity of the parameters was used for comparison of samples. New material greatly contributes to data on composition of fauna and structure of communities of the studied region. It was revealed that small scyphozoid polyps and sipunculoids play an important role in the trough's community. Presence of a community dominated by Ophiocten sericeum (with important role of small bivalves) was revealed for the first time not only at the eastern by also at the western slope of the Novaya Zemlya Trough. The sharpest changes in composition and structure of the bottom community were confined to a zone of transition from the trough floor to the slope. These changes are determined by specificity of the macrorelief (of the floor and slope), composition of ground (soft brown silts abound in rhizopods and dense gray silts with admixture of pebbles), and possibly by hydrodynamic processes near the bottom.
