Magnetic susceptibility (MS) was measured with high resolution (5 mm) on a 9 m long, 14C dated core from Lake Le Bourget (Savoie, France), spanning the last 7200 years. The strong correlation (R=0.85) of the MS with the silicate-borne suite of elements (Si, Al, Fe, Mg, K) and anti-correlation with the carbonate content (R =-0.87) allows it to be used as a proxy for the fluctuations of the abundance of riverborne clastic fraction versus authigenic carbonates in sediment. As the Rhône is the only river bringing a significant amount of silicate minerals to the coring site, the MS downstream is interpreted as a proxy of the Rhône suspended load discharge in Lake Le Bourget. This is confirmed over the last 3000 years by the good match with the evolution of hydrological activity of the Rhône as it is known through geomorphological studies of well-dated archaeological sites. Over the last 7200 years, the record is consistent with the regional record of lake water-level fluctuations. While the intensity of the MS signal might be widely affected by the human impact on soil stability, the timing of the period of enhanced hydrological activity appears to be mostly climate-related, and should thus constitute a first step toward a high-resolution (< 8 yr) continuous history of hydrological conditions in the NW Alps.

Geochemical well logs were used to measure the dry weight percent oxide abundances of Si, Al, Ca, Mg, Fe, Ti, and K and the elemental abundances of Gd, S, Th, and U at 0.15-m intervals throughout the basement section of Hole 504B. These geochemical data are used to estimate the integrated chemical exchange resulting from hydrothermal alteration of the oceanic crust that has occurred over the last 5.9 Ma. A large increase in Si in the transition zone between pillows and dikes (Layers 2B and 2C) indicates that mixing of hot, upwelling hydrothermal fluids with cold, downwelling seawater occurred in the past at a permeability discontinuity at this level in the crust, even though the low-to-high permeability boundary in Hole 504B is now 500 m shallower (at the Layer 2A/2B boundary). The observations of extensive Ca loss and Mg gain agree with chemical exchanges recorded in the laboratory in experiments on the reactions that occur between basalt and seawater at high temperatures. The K budget requires significant addition to Layer 2A from both high-temperature depletion in Layers 2B and 2C and low-temperature alteration by seawater. Integrated water/rock ratios are derived for the mass of seawater required to add enriched elements and for the mass of hydrothermal fluid required to remove depleted elements in the crust at Hole 504B.

Four species of planktic foraminifera from core-tops spanning a depth transect on the Ontong Java Plateau were prepared for Mg/Ca analysis both with (Cd-cleaning) and without (Mg-cleaning) a reductive cleaning step. Reductive cleaning caused etching of foraminiferal calcite, focused on Mg-rich inner calcite, even on tests which had already been partially dissolved at the seafloor. Despite corrosion, there was no difference in Mg/Ca of Pulleniatina obliquiloculata between cleaning methods. Reductive cleaning decreased Mg/Ca by an average (all depths) of ~ 4% for Globigerinoides ruber white and ~ 10% for Neogloboquadrina dutertrei. Mg/Ca of Globigerinoides sacculifer (above the calcite saturation horizon only) was 5% lower after reductive cleaning. The decrease in Mg/Ca due to reductive cleaning appeared insensitive to preservation state for G. ruber, N. dutertrei and P. obliquiloculata. Mg/Ca of Cd-cleaned G. sacculifer appeared less sensitive to dissolution than that of Mg-cleaned. Mg-cleaning is adequate, but SEM and contaminants (Al/Ca, Fe/Ca and Mn/Ca) show that Cd-cleaning is more effective for porous species. A second aspect of the study addressed sample loss during cleaning. Lower yield after Cd-cleaning for G. ruber, G. sacculifer and N. dutertrei confirmed this to be the more aggressive method. Strongest correlations between yield and Delta[CO3^2-] in core-top samples were for Cd-cleaned G. ruber (r = 0.88, p = 0.020) and Cd-cleaned P. obliquiloculata (r = 0.68, p = 0.030). In a down-core record (WIND28K) correlation, r, between yield values > 30% and dissolution index, XDX, was -0.61 (p = 0.002). Where cleaning yield < 30% most Mg-cleaned Mg/Ca values were biased by dissolution.
