Distributions of free and bound n-alkanes, n-alkanoic acids, and n-alkanols were determined in order to compare the character of organic matter contained in organic-carbon-rich sediments from two sites sampled by the hydraulic piston corer. Two diatomaceous debris-flow samples of Pleistocene age were obtained from Hole 530B in the Angola Basin. A sample of bioturbated Pleistocene diatomaceous clay and another of bioturbated late Miocene nannofossil clay were collected from Hole 532 on the Walvis Ridge. Geolipid distributions of all samples contain large terrigenous contributions and lesser amounts of marine components. Similarities in organic matter contents of Hole 530B and Hole 532 sediments suggest that a common depositional setting, probably on the Walvis Ridge, was the original source of these sediments through Quaternary, and possibly late Neogene, times and that downslope relocation of these biogenic deposits has frequently occurred.

Forty sediment and four basement basalt samples from DSDP Hole 525A, Leg 74, as well as nine basalt samples from southern and offshore Brazil, were subjected to instrumental neutron activation analysis. Thirty-two major, minor, and trace elements were determined. The downcore element concentration profiles and regression analyses show that the rare earth elements (REE) are present in significant amounts in both the carbonate and noncarbonate phases in sediments; Sr is concentrated in the carbonate phase, and most of the other elements determined exist mainly in the noncarbonate phase. The calculated partition coefficients of the REE between the carbonate phase and the free ion concentrations in seawater are high and increase with decreasing REE ionic radii from 3.9 x 10**6 for La to 15 x 10**6 for Lu. Calculations show that the lanthanide concentrations in South Atlantic seawater have not been changed significantly over the past 70 Ma. The Ce anomaly observed in the carbonate phase is a redox indicator of ancient seawater. Study of the Ce anomaly reveals that seawater was anoxic over the Walvis Ridge during the late Campanian. As the gap between South America and West Africa widened and the Walvis Ridge subsided from late Campanian to late Paleocene times, the water circulation of the South Atlantic improved and achieved oxidation conditions about 54 Ma that are similar to present seawater redox conditions in the world oceans. The chemical compositions of the basement rocks correspond to alkalic basalts, not mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs). The results add more evidence to support the hypothesis that the Walvis Ridge was formed by a series of volcanos moving over a "hot spot" near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. From the chemical composition and REE pattern, one 112 Ma old basalt on the Brazilian continental shelf has been identified as an early stage MORB. To date, this is the oldest oceanic tholeiite recovered from the South Atlantic. This direct evidence indicates that the continental split between South America and Africa commenced > 112 Ma.

The fate of subducted sediment and the extent to which it is dehydrated and/or melted before incorporation into arc lavas has profound implications for the thermo-mechanical nature of the mantle wedge and models for crustal evolution. In order to address these issues, we have undertaken the first measurements of 10Be and light elements in lavas from the Tonga-Kermadec arc and the sediment profile at DSDP site 204 outboard of the trench. The 10Be/9Be ratios in the Tonga lavas are lower than predicted from flux models but can be explained if (a) previously estimated sediment contributions are too high by a factor of 2-10, (b) the top 1-22 m of the incoming sediment is accreted, (c) large amounts of sediment erosion are proposed, or (d) the sediment component takes several Myr longer than the subducting plate to reach the magma source region beneath Tonga. The lavas form negative Th/Be-Li/Be arrays that extend from a depleted mantle source composition to lower Th/Be and Li/Be ratios than that of the bulk sediment. Thus, these arrays are not easily explained by bulk sediment addition and, using partition coefficients derived from experiments on the in-coming sediment, we show that they are also unlikely to result from fluid released during dehydration of the sediment (or altered oceanic crust). However, partial melts of the dehydrated sediment residue formed at ~800 °C during the breakdown of amphibole +/- plagioclase and in the absence of cordierite have significantly lowered Th/Be ratios. The lava arrays can be successfully modelled as 10-15% partial melts of depleted mantle after it has been enriched by the addition of 0.2-2% of these partial melts. Phase relations suggest that this requires that the top of the subducting crust reaches temperatures of ~800 °C by the time it attains ~ 80 km depth which is in excellent agreement with the results of recent numerical models incorporating a temperature-dependent mantle viscosity. Under these conditions the wet basalt solidus is also crossed yet there is no recognisable eclogitic signal in the lavas suggesting that on-going dehydration or strong thermal gradients in the upper part of the subducting plate inhibit partialmelting of the altered oceanic crust.

Members of the marine dinoflagellate genus Alexandrium are known to exude allelochemicals, unrelated to well-known neurotoxins (PSP-toxins, spirolides), with negative effects on other phytoplankton and marine grazers. Physico/chemical characterization of extracellular lytic compounds of A. tamarense, quantified by Rhodomonas salina bioassay, showed that the lytic activity, and hence presumably the compounds were stable over wide ranges of temperatures and pH and were refractory to bacterial degradation. Two distinct lytic fractions were collected by reversed-phase solid-phase extraction. The more hydrophilic fraction accounted for about 2% of the whole lytic activity of the A. tamarense culture supernatant, while the less hydrophilic one accounted for about 98% of activity. Although temporal stability of the compounds is high, substantial losses were evident during purification. Lytic activity was best removed from aqueous phase with chloroform-methanol (3:1). A "pseudo-loss" of lytic activity in undisturbed and low-concentrated samples and high activity of an emulsion between aqueous and n-hexane phase after liquid-liquid partition are strong evidence for the presence of amphipathic compounds. Lytic activity in the early fraction of gel permeation chromatography and lack of activity after 5 kD ultrafiltration indicate that the lytic agents form large aggregates or macromolecular complexes.

The Kerguelen Plateau and Broken Ridge in the southern Indian Ocean together represent one of the most voluminous large igneous provinces (LIPs) ever emplaced on Earth. A scientific objective of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 183 was to constrain the post-melting magma evolution of Kerguelen Plateau magmas. In an effort to better understand this evolution, isotopic and trace element analysis of individual plagioclase crystals hosted within two Kerguelen Plateau basalts recovered from Elan Bank were undertaken. Previous whole-rock studies established that the two host basalts investigated in this study are samples of crustally contaminated (lower group) and relatively uncontaminated (upper group) basalt. Plagioclase phenocrysts from the uncontaminated basalt are dominantly normal zoned and exhibit a 87Sr/86SrI range of 0.704845-0.704985, which overlaps uncontaminated group whole-rock values previously reported. Plagioclase crystals from the contaminated basalt are dominantly reverse zoned and exhibit a 87Sr/86SrI range of 0.705510-0.705735, which all lie within contaminated group whole-rock values previously reported. There are no systematic within crystal core to rim variations in 87Sr/86SrI from either group, with the exception that contaminated group crystal rims have overall less radiogenic 87Sr/86SrI than other zones. These observations indicate that crustal assimilation occurred before the formation of Unit 10 plagioclase phenocrysts, which is supported by parent magma trace element abundance data inverted using carefully calculated partition coefficients. Trace element diffusion modeling indicates that the upper group basalt (Unit 4) experienced a more vigorous eruptive flux than the lower group basalt (Unit 10). We suggest that plagioclase phenocrysts in both the upper and lower group basalts originated from the shallowest section of what was likely a complex magma chamber system. We contend that the magmatic system contained regions of extensive plagioclase-dominated crystal mush. Crustal assimilation was not a significant ongoing process in this portion of the Elan Bank magmatic system. Both basalts exhibit compelling evidence for remobilization and partial resorption of crystalline debris (e.g., reverse zoned crystals, glomerocrysts). We suggest Unit 4 and 10 magmas ascended different sections of the Elan Bank magma system, where the Unit 10 magmas ascended a section of the magma system that penetrated a stranded fragment of continental crust.

In coastal waters, Antarctic rhodophytes are exposed to harsh environmental conditions throughout the year, like low water temperatures ranging from -1.8°C to 2°C and high light during the summer season. Photosynthetic performance under these conditions may be affected by slowed down enzymatic reactions and the increased generation of reactive oxygen species. The consequence might be a chronic photoinhibition of photosynthetic primary reactions related to increased fragmentation of the D1 reaction centre protein in photosystem II. It is hypothesized that changes in lipid composition of biomembranes may represent an adaptive trait to maintain D1 turnover in response to temperature variation. The interactive effects of high light and low temperature were studied on an endemic Antarctic red alga, Palmaria decipiens, sampled from two shore levels, intertidal and subtidal, and exposed to mesocosm experiments using two levels of natural solar radiation and two different temperature regimes (2-5°C and 5-10°C). During the experimental period of 23 days, maximum quantum yield of photosynthesis decreased in all treatments, with the intertidal specimens exposed at 5-10°C being most affected. On the pigment level, a decreasing ratio of phycobiliproteins to chlorophyll a was found in all treatments. A pronounced decrease in D1 protein concentration occurred in subtidal specimens exposed at 2-5°C. Marked changes in lipid composition, i.e. the ratio of saturated to unsaturated fatty acids, indicated an effective response of specimens to temperature change. Results provide new insights into mechanisms of stress adaptation in this key species of shallow Antarctic benthic communities.

In the context of the KErguelen Ocean and Plateau compared Study (KEOPS, 19 January-13 February 2005), particle dynamics were investigated using thorium isotope measurements over and off the Kerguelen plateau. Dissolved and particulate 230Th and 232Th samples were collected at nine stations. Dissolved excess 230Th concentrations (230Thxs) vary from 0.5 to 20.8 fg/kg and particulate 230Thxs concentrations from 0.1 to 10.0 fg/kg. Dissolved and particulate 232Th concentration ranges are 16.8-450.2 pg/kg and 3.8-502.8 pg/kg, respectively. The 230Thxs concentrations increase linearly with depth down to the bottom at most of the plateau stations and down to 1000 m at the off-plateau stations. This linear trend is observed down to the bottom (1550 m) at Kerfix, the open-ocean "upstream" station located west of the Kerguelen plateau. A simple reversible scavenging model applied to these data allowed the estimation of adsorption rate constant (k1~=0.2-0.8 per year), desorption rate constant (k-1~=1-8 per year) and partition coefficients (average K=0.16±0.07). Calculated particle settling velocities S deduced from this simple model are ca. 500 m/year at most of the plateau stations and 800 m/year at all the off-plateau stations. The plateau settling velocities are relatively low for such a productive site, compared to the surrounding HNLC areas. The difference might reflect the fact that lateral advection is neglected in this model. Taking this advection into account allows the reconstruction of the observed 230Thxs linear distributions, but only if faster settling velocities are considered. This implies that the 1D model strongly underestimates the settling velocity of the particles. In the deep layers, the occurrence of intense boundary scavenging along the escarpment due to bottom sediment re-suspension and interaction with a nepheloid layer, yielding a removal of ?50% of the Th stock along the northwestward transect, is suggested.

Results of investigation of various forms of oil pollution, i.e. oil films, tar, and hydrocarbons in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean and North Indian Ocean during October-December 1980 and February-May 1981 are presented. Oil pollution was found only in regions of the heaviest ship traffic and was somewhat less than in 1976-1977. Background concentration of non-polar hydrocarbons was 8-10 ?g/l in surface waters and 14 ?g/l in the shelf zone. Infrared spectroscopy and gas-liquid chromatography indicate that hydrocarbons occurring at concentrations exceeding 50 ?g/l have composition differing from background hydrocarbons. There is considerable accumulation of hydrocarbons in the thin surface layer, and they exist in different forms close to pollution sources.

Organic-matter-rich Upper Cretaceous claystones from DSDP Hole 603B, lower continental rise, had organic carbon values ranging from 1.7 to 13.7%, C/N ratios from 32 to 72, and d13C values from -23.5 to -27.1 per mil. Lipid class maxima for the unbound alkanes (C29 and C31), unbound fatty acids (C28 and C30), and bound fatty acids (C24, C26 , and C28) and the strong odd-carbon and even-carbon preferences, respectively, suggested that the organic matter in these sediments was partially the result of input from continental plant waxes. Transport of the organic-matter-rich sediments to the deep sea from the near-shore environment probably resulted from turbiditic flow under oxygen-stressed conditions.

Chloroform extracts of water-soluble organic matter collected in the water column from the surface to the bottom were studied by C-13 and H-1 NMR chromatographic mass spectrometry, and phthalate concentrations were determined by capillary gas-liquid chromatography. More than 14 compounds were found including diethyl phthalate, ethyl butyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, and di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate, phthalates with normal C4-C12 chains, phthalates partially esterified with methanol, and others, at total concentrations up to 0.4 mg/l. Possible reasons for presence of phthalates in oceans, sometimes in high concentrations, are discussed.

During Cruise 49 of R/V Dmitry Mendeleev in the Kara Sea (August-September, 1993) chemical-bitumenological studies of bottom sediments were carried out. Hydrocarbons were analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography. It was found on the basis of distribution of n-alkanes and isoprenoids (pristan and phytan) that organic matter is mainly terrigenous consisting of higher plant remains.
