Holes 603C and 604 of DSDP Leg 93 were drilled on the western Atlantic continental rise at water depths of 4633 m and 2364 m, respectively. In Hole 603C, a nearly continuous, undisturbed, and complete section of Pliocene and lower Pleistocene sediments was recovered by hydraulic piston coring; in Hole 604, a section of uppermost Miocene to Pleistocene sediments was incompletely recovered by rotary coring. In order to reconstruct the Pliocene and Pleistocene history of isotopic variations, 139 oxygen and carbon isotope values were determined for planktonic and monospecific benthic foraminifer samples from these holes. Large parts of the Pleistocene history could not, however, be documented because sample intervals were large and sediments at Site 604 were redeposited. Time correlation is based on magnetostratigraphic (Hole 603C) and micropaleontologic (Hole 603C, Site 604) interpretation. Stable isotope analyses were carried out on the planktonic foraminiferal species Globigerinoides ruber, G. obliquus, and Globorotalia inflata from Hole 603C (48 analyses) and from Site 604 (48 analyses); at Site 604, the benthic foraminifer Uvigerina peregrina (43 analyses) was also studied through the section. Age calibration for Hole 603C is based on the magnetostratigraphy of Canninga et al. (1987; doi:10.2973/dsdp.proc.93.130.1987), which uses the time scale of Lowrie and Alvarez (1981).

Cretaceous sediments encountered in Hole 603B contain a 17 Å smectite as the principal clay mineral, with lesser amounts of illite, kaolinite, and randomly interstratified illite/smectite (I/S). No evidence of smectite to I/S transformation with depth is seen in the interval between 1040 and 1570 m below the sediment surface. Although the presence of some volcanic ash suggests a volcanic origin for the smectite, the nature of associated organic matter together with prevailing sedimentological models for Cretaceous sedimentation on the lower continental rise argue more strongly for a dominantly terrestrial origin for the clays.

This paper describes and illustrates early to middle Eocene benthic foraminifers from northwest Atlantic Site 605, on the continental rise off New Jersey. Benthic foraminiferal faunas are dominated by Bulitnina spp., Nuttallides truempyi, Lenticulina spp., and Cibicidoides spp. Other common taxa include Oridorsalis spp., Gyroidinoides spp., uniserial taxa, arenaceous taxa, and Globocassidulina subglobosa. Together, these taxa usually make up 70% or more of the total fauna. The assemblages are interpreted as indicating a lower bathyal environment of deposition during the Eocene at Site 605. This is corroborated by an independent water depth estimate through backstripping, indicating a water depth for the beginning of the Eocene to late middle Eocene of approximately 2300 to 2000 m.

Upper Berriasian to lower Aptian calcareous nannofossil assemblages have been studied from a siliciclastic deep-sea fan complex and a subjacent limestone sequence drilled beneath the lower continental rise in the western North American Basin, 270 miles (435 km) off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina (USA). Sharp lithologic facies changes and reworking by turbidites complicate the biostratigraphic interpretation, but provide an excellent opportunity to better distinguish "nearshore" from open-ocean nannofossil species, and to investigate the introduction of neritic taxa into the deep-see environment, a phenomenon that appears to have been widespread within the circum-North Atlantic during Neocomian times. Well-preserved assemblages in dark, carbonaceous claystones were probably displaced from the oxygen minimum zone along the upper slope or outer shelf. Neritic, continental margin species prevalent in this facies include the holococcolith Zebrashapka vanhintei n. gen., n. sp., Lithraphidites alatus magnus n. spp., Pickelhaube furtiva n. gen., and a host of nannoconids and micrantholiths. A qualitative evaluation of widely used guide fossils suggests that the triad of proposed markers for the base of Roth's Zone NC3 make their first appearances in the following (ascending) order: Diadorhombus rectus, TUbodiscus verenae, Calcicalathina oblongata. Of these, we chose the nominative species for the zone, T. verenae, to mark its base and to approximate the Berriasian/Valangian boundary. Cyclagelosphaera deflandrei is strongly affected by diagenesis and is therefore not a reliable index species for the base of Zone NC4 near the Valanginian/Hauterivian boundary (the last occurrence of T. verenae is also not suitable there). In addition, Lithraphidites bollii, a form apparently confined to the low latitudes of the Tethyan region, was absent at the more temperate Site 603 and not available as a subzonal marker for the upper Hautervian-lower Barremian (mid-NC4 and mid-NC5, respectively). Cruciellipsis cuvillieri, however, provides a reliable datum just below the Hauterivian/Barremian boundary (base of NC5), despite the potential for reworking in this section. Nannoconids tend to be reworked in this section, and do not provide trustworthy forms to mark the Barremian/Aptian boundary (base of NC6). Hayesites irregularis n. comb, probably does provide a useful first appearance datum within the lower Aptian, if it is not confused with a more birefringent and globular form, Rucinolithus terebrodentarius n. sp. Rhagodiscus angustus is mimicked by a similar form (Zeughrabdotusl pseudoangustus n. sp.), which apparently ranges down to the Hauterivian, thus Lithastrinus floralis provides a more useful first appearance datum for the base of the middle-upper Aptian Rhagodiscus angustus Zone (NC7). Aside from the new taxa mentioned above, the following are also described: Cretarhabdusl delicatus n. sp. and Cyclagelosphaera jiangii n. sp.

The organic matter contents of sediments and rocks sampled during DSDP Leg 93 have been characterized by CHN and Rock-Eval analyses. Most samples from Sites 604 and 605 on the New Jersey continental slope and from Site 603 on the Hatteras outer continental rise contained less than 0.5% organic carbon. Some Neogene samples from the slope contained 1 to 2% organic carbon, and Cretaceous samples from the outer rise were as rich as 13.6% organic carbon by weight. Thin layers of black claystones of Santonian, Cenomanian, and Albian age were found interbedded in organiccarbon- lean, bioturbated, turbiditic claystones. Similar layers of turbiditic black marlstones were interspersed among Neocomian limestones and sandstones. Although the organic matter in many of the samples appeared to be detrital continental material, according to Rock-Eval and C/N values, Cenomanian black shales, in particular, contained substantial proportions of marine-derived organic matter.
