The measurements were obtained during two North Sea wide STAR-shaped cruises during summer 1986 and winter 1987, which were performed to investigate the circulation induced transport and biologically induced pollutant transfer within the interdisciplinary research in the project "ZISCH - Zirkulation und Schadstoffumsatz in der Nordsee / Circulation and Contaminant Fluxes in the North Sea (1984-1989)". The inventory presents parameters measured on hydrodynamics, nutrient dynamics, ecosystem dynamics and pollutant dynamics in the pelagic and benthic realm. The research program had the objective of quantifying fluxes of major budgets, especially contaminants in the North Sea. In spring 1986, following the phytoplankton spring bloom, and in late winter 1987, at minimum primary production activity, the North Sea ecosystem was investigated on a station net covering the whole North Sea. The station net was shaped like a star. Sampling started in the centre, followed by the northwest section and moving counter clockwise around the North Sea following the residual currents. By this strategy, a time series was measured in the central North Sea and more synoptic data sets were obtained in the individual sections. Generally advection processes have to be considered when comparing the data from different stations. The entire sampling period lasted for more than six weeks in each cruise. Thus, a time-lag should be considered especially when comparing the data from the eastern and the western part of the central and northern North Sea, where samples were taken at the beginning and at the end of the campaign. The ZISCH investigations represented a qualitatively and quantitatively new approach to North Sea research in several respects. (1) The first simultaneous blanket coverage of all important biological, chemical and physical parameters in the entire North Sea ecosystem; (2) the first simultaneous measurements of major contaminants (metals and organohaline compounds) in the different ecosystem compartments; (3) simultaneous determinations of atmospheric inputs of momentum, energy and matter as important ecosystem boundary conditions; (4) performance of the complex measurement program during two seasons, namely the spring plankton bloom and the subsequent winter period of minimal biological activity; and (5) support of data analysis and interpretation by oceanographic and meteorological numerical models on the same scales.

This paper presents the results of a Secchi depth data mining study for the North Sea - Baltic Sea region. 40,829 measurements of Secchi depth were compiled from the area as a result of this study. 4.3% of the observations were found in the international data centers [ICES Oceanographic Data Center in Denmark and the World Ocean Data Center A (WDC-A) in the USA], while 95.7% of the data was provided by individuals and ocean research institutions from the surrounding North Sea and Baltic Sea countries. Inquiries made at the World Ocean Data Center B (WDC-B) in Russia suggested that there could be significant additional holdings in that archive but, unfortunately, no data could be made available. The earliest Secchi depth measurement retrieved in this study dates back to 1902 for the Baltic Sea, while the bulk of the measurements were gathered after 1970. The spatial distribution of Secchi depth measurements in the North Sea is very uneven with surprisingly large sampling gaps in the Western North Sea. Quarterly and annual Secchi depth maps with a 0.5° x 0.5° spatial resolution are provided for the transition area between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea (4°E-16°E, 53°N-60°N).

Although sea-ice extent in the Bellingshausen-Amundsen (BA) seas sector of the Antarctic has shown significant decline over several decades, there is not enough data to draw any conclusion on sea-ice thickness and its change for the BA sector, or for the entire Southern Ocean. This paper presents our results of snow and ice thickness distributions from the SIMBA 2007 experiment in the Bellingshausen Sea, using four different methods (ASPeCt ship observations, downward-looking camera imaging, ship-based electromagnetic induction (EM) sounding, and in situ measurements using ice drills). A snow freeboard and ice thickness model generated from in situ measurements was then applied to contemporaneous ICESat (satellite laser altimetry) measured freeboard to derive ice thickness at the ICESat footprint scale. Errors from in situ measurements and from ICESat freeboard estimations were incorporated into the model, so a thorough evaluation of the model and uncertainty of the ice thickness estimation from ICESat are possible. Our results indicate that ICESat derived snow freeboard and ice thickness distributions (asymmetrical unimodal tailing to right) for first-year ice (0.29 ± 0.14 m for mean snow freeboard and 1.06 ± 0.40 m for mean ice thickness), multi-year ice (0.48 ± 0.26 and 1.59 ± 0.75 m, respectively), and all ice together (0.42 ± 0.24 and 1.38 ± 0.70 m, respectively) for the study area seem reasonable compared with those values from the in situ measurements, ASPeCt observations, and EM measurements. The EM measurements can act as an appropriate supplement for ASPeCt observations taken hourly from the ship's bridge and provide reasonable ice and snow distributions under homogeneous ice conditions. Our proposed approaches: (1) of using empirical equations relating snow freeboard to ice thickness based on in situ measurements and (2) of using isostatic equations that replace snow depth with snow freeboard (or empirical equations that convert freeboard to snow depth), are efficient and important ways to derive ice thickness from ICESat altimetry at the footprint scale for Antarctic sea ice. Spatial and temporal snow and ice thickness from satellite altimetry for the BA sector and for the entire Southern Ocean is therefore possible.

Percent CaCO3 was determined in selected samples aboard the ship by the carbonate-bomb technique (Müller and Gastner, 1971). Results of these analyses are listed in Table 1 and plotted in Figures 1, 3, 4, and 5 as plus signs (+). Samples collected specifically for analyses of CaCO3 and organic carbon were analyzed at three shore-based laboratories. Concentrations of total carbon, organic carbon, and CaCO3 were determined in some samples at the DSDP sediment laboratory, using a Leco carbon analyzer, by personnel of the U.S. Geological Survey, under the supervision of T. L. Valuer. Most of these samples were collected from lithologic units containing relatively high concentrations of organic carbon. Sample procedures are outlined in Boyce and Bode (1972). Precision and accuracy are both ±0.3% absolute for total carbon, ±0.06% absolute for organic carbon, and ±3% absolute for CaCO3.

At Sites 1130 and 1132 of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 182 in the Great Australian Bight, we recovered an expanded Pleistocene section dominated by packstone and wackestone, deposited at unusually high rates of >20 cm/k.y. Shipboard observations detected an intermittent meter-scale alternation of light gray intervals with olive-gray intervals. Meter-scale samples were collected from the upper 250 m at both sites and decimeter-scale samples from four selected 2.5- to 4.0-m intervals in order to determine the texture and composition of sediments deposited along the upper slope throughout the Quaternary. Detailed textural and compositional data are presented from a total of 540 samples collected from both sites. Results indicate a general coarsening upward at both sites, with an accompanying upcore increase in high-Mg calcite (HMC) and aragonite and a decrease in low-Mg calcite (LMC). Samples collected at decimeter-scale intervals substantiate that the alternating light gray and olive-gray units detected on board ship are lithologically distinct. Light gray units consist of an LMC-rich silt, whereas olive-gray units consist of an aragonite and HMC-rich sand and silt. Sediment sources as well as timing and controls of this cyclic depositional pattern will be the subject of further investigations.
