3He/4He ratios of pore gases in pore water and chemical composition of sediments at DSDP Sites 87-583 and 87-584

We have measured the 3He/4He and 20Ne/4He ratios of gases dissolved in the pore water in sediments at two sites in the Nankai Trough (Site 583) and the Japan Trench (Site 584). The 3He/4He and 20Ne/4He ratios vary from 0.215 * 10**-6 to 1.23 * 10**-6 and from 50 * 10**-3 to 2700 * 10**-3, respectively. These values can be explained by mixing two components, one from the atmosphere and one with a 3He/4He ratio of (0.2 to 0.3) * 10**-6. The latter component may be derived from the ocean crust near the subduction zone.

Der niederschlagsreiche, durch mehrere Schadenshochwasser gekennzeichnete Sommer 1987 hat die Nachmessungen an den Gletschern nicht behindert. In 16 Berichten aus elf Gebirgsgruppen wurden die Beobachtungs- und Meßergebnisse von 125 Gletschern vollständig und in bewährter Weise mitgeteilt. Die Originalberichte sind im AV-Gletschermeßarchiv in Innsbruck eingestellt.

Mineralogy and geochemistry of volcanic ash at Japan Trench from DSDP Legs 87 and 57

Volcanogenic sediments were obtained from Site 584, located on the midslope of the Japan Trench. Occurrences of volcanic ash in the diatomaceous mudstones increase within sediments dated 6-3 Ma. The frequency pattern and the sediment accumulation rate obtained at Site 584 are similar to those of Site 440 and to those of Sites 438 and 439, located on the upper slope basin. Explosive volcanism increased during the Pliocene and late Miocene in relation to the intrusion of Tertiary granites and uplift of the Tohoku Arc (northeastern Japan Arc). Hygromagmaphile element concentration shows that the glass does not belong to a unique series, and a comparison with Nankai Trough data distinguishes at least two different evolutionary lines.
