Assessment of changes in surface ocean conditions, in particular, sea-surface temperature (SST), is essential to understand long-term changes in climate especially in regions where continental climate is strongly influenced by oceanographic processes. To evaluate changes in SST in the northeast Pacific, we have analyzed long-chain alkenones of prymnesiophyte origin at 38 depths in a piston and associated trigger core collected beneath the contemporary core of the California Current System at 42°N, ~270 km off the coast of Oregon/California. The samples span 30,000 years of deposition at this location. Unsaturation patterns (UK'37) in the alkenone series display a statistically significant difference (p <<0.001) between interglacial (0.44 ± 0.02, n = 11) and glacial (0.29 ± 0.04, n = 20) intervals of the cores. Detailed examination of other compositional features of the C37, C38, C39 alkenone series and a related C36 alkenoate series measured downcore suggests the published UK'37 - temperature calibration (UK'37 = 0.034 * T + 0.039 ) , defined for cultures of a strain of Emiliania huxleyi isolated from the subarctic Pacific, provides best estimates of winter SST at our study site. This inference is purely statistical and does not imply, however, that the phytoplankton source of these biomarkers is most productive in winter or at the ocean surface. The temperature record for UK'37 implies (1) an ~4°C shift occurred in winter SST from ~7.5 ± 1.1°C at the last glacial maximum to ~11.7 ± 0.7°C in the present interglacial period, and (2) this warming trend was confined to the time frame 14-10 Ka within the glacial to interglacial transition period. These conclusions are corroborated entirely by results from an independent SST transformation of radiolarian species assemblage data obtained from the same core materials.

In October 1979, a period of heavy rainfall along the French Riviera was followed by the collapse of the Ligurian continental slope adjacent to the airport of Nice, France. A body of slope sediments, which was shortly beforehand affected by construction work south of the airport, was mobilized and traveled hundreds of kilometers downslope into the Var submarine canyon and, eventually, into the deep Ligurian basin. As a direct consequence, the construction was destroyed, seafloor cables were torn, and a small tsunami hit Antibes shortly after the failure. Hypotheses regarding the trigger mechanism include (i) vertical loading by construction of an embankment south of the airport, (ii) failure of a layer of sensitive clay within the slope sequence, and (iii) excess pore fluid pressures from charged aquifers in the underground. Over the previous decades, both the sensitive clay layers and the permeable sand and gravel layers were sampled to detect freshened waters. In 2007, the landslide scar and adjacent slopes were revisited for high-resolution seafloor mapping and systematic sampling. Results from half a dozen gravity and push cores in the shallow slope area reveal a limited zone of freshening (i.e. groundwater influence). A 100-250 m wide zone of the margin shows pore water salinities of 5-50% SW concentration and depletion in Cl, SO4, but Cr enrichment, while cores east or west of the landslide scar show regular SW profiles. Most interestingly, the three cores inside the landslide scar hint towards a complex hydrological system with at least two sources for groundwater. The aquifer system also showed strong freshening after a period of several months without significant precipitation. This freshening implies that charged coarse-grained layers represent a permanent threat to the slope's stability, not just after periods of major rainfall such as in October 1979.

Organic geochemical and sedimentological investigations have been performed on sediments from ODP Sites 798 and 799 in order to reconstruct the depositional environment in the Japan Sea through late Cenozoic times. The Miocene to Quaternary sediments from Site 798 (Oki Ridge) and Site 799 (Kita-Yamato Trough) are characterized by high organic carbon contents of up to 6%. The organic matter is mainly a mixture of marine and terrigenous material. The dominant factors controlling marine organic carbon enrichment in the sediments of Hole 798A are probably an increased surface-water productivity and/or an increased preservation rate of organic carbon under anoxic deep-water conditions. In lower Pliocene sediments at Site 798 and Miocene to Quaternary sediments at Site 799, rapid burial of organic matter in turbidites may have been important, too. Remarkable cycles of dark, laminated sediments distinctly enriched in (marine) organic carbon by up to 5% and light, bioturbated to homogeneous sediments with reduced organic carbon contents indicate dramatic short-term paleoenvironmental variation.

We present late Quaternary records of aragonite preservation determined for sediment cores recovered on the Brazilian Continental Slope (1790-2585 m water depth) where North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) dominates at present. We have used various indirect dissolution proxies (carbonate content, aragonite/calcite contents, and sand percentages) as well as gastropodal abundances and fragmentation of Limacina inflata to determine the state of aragonite preservation. In addition, microscopic investigations of the dissolution susceptibility of three Limacina species yielded the Limacina Dissolution Index which correlates well with most of the other proxies. Excellent preservation of aragonite was found in the Holocene section, whereas aragonite dissolution gradually increases downcore. This general pattern is attributed to an overall increase in aragonite corrosiveness of pore waters. Overprinted on this early diagenetic trend are high-frequency fluctuations of aragonite preservation, which may be related to climatically induced variations of intermediate water masses.

Geochemical characterizations of the Cretaceous formations at Site 603 are quite comparable with those at Site 105. In the Blake-Bahama and the Hatteras formations, the petroleum potential is medium (<5 kg HC/t of rock) to very low (<0.5 kg HC/t of rock), and the organic matter is mainly of type III origin, that is, terrestrial. At the top of the Hatteras Formation, there is a condensed series, which chiefly contains organic matter of type II origin, with up to 20 wt.% total organic carbon content in Core 603B-34 and 25 wt.% in Core 105-9. This accumulation corresponds to the Cenomanian/Turonian boundary event. An examination of dinoflagellates in the kerogen concentration assigns dates to the samples studied by organic geochemistry. The Cenomanian and Turonian age of the organic-matter-rich black claystones indicates a low rate of sedimentation, about 1 m/Ma. Furthermore, the occurrence of type II organic matter indicates an anoxic environment with insufficient oxygen renewal to oxidize the sinking hemipelagic organic matter. This organic enrichment is not related to local phenomena but to sedimentation over an extended area, because deposits are well known in various areas with different paleodepths in the North Atlantic.

Sedimentary d15N records are valuable archives of ocean history but they are often modified during early diagenesis. Here we quantify the effect of early diagenetic enrichment on sedimentary N-isotope composition in order to obtain the pristine signal of reactive N assimilated in the euphotic zone. This is possible by using paired data of d15N and amino acid composition of sediment samples, which can be applied to estimate the degree of organic matter degradation. We determined d15N and amino acid composition in coeval sediments from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Hole 772 B in the central Arabian Sea and from Hole 724 C situated on the Oman Margin in the western Arabian Sea coastal upwelling area. The records span the last 130 kyr and include two glacial-interglacial cycles. These new data are used in conjunction with data available for surface sediments that cover a wide range of organic matter degradation states, and with other cores from the northern and eastern Arabian Sea to explore spatial variations in the isotopic signal. In order to reconstruct pristine N values we apply the relationship between organic matter degradation and 15N enrichment in surface sediments to correct the core records for early diagenetic enrichment. Reconstructed d15N values suggest a significant role of N2-fixation during glacial stages. An evaluation of two preservation indices based on amino acid composition (Reactivity Index, RI; Jennerjahn and Ittekkot, 1997; and the Degradation Index, DI; Dauwe et al., 1999) in both recent sediments and core samples suggests that the RI is more suitable than the DI in correcting Arabian Sea d15N records for early diagenetic enrichment.

Different source areas, oceanography and climate regimes influenced the clay mineral assemblages and grain size distribution of two sediment cores from the North and South Aegean Sea during the last glacial and the Holocene. In the North Aegean Sea, clay mineral composition is mainly controlled by sea level evolution, melting of southeastern European glaciers, and establishment of the connection between the Black Sea and Aegean Sea. The long-term development of clay mineral assemblages in the South Aegean Sea reflects changes in the Nile discharge and African dust input. At this site, the establishment of pluvial conditions in the Nile catchment during the early to middle Holocene resulted in a substantial rise in smectite/illite ratios. In the late Holocene, stepwise aridification of the southern borderlands caused an increase in windblown sediment material and a decrease in Nile suspended material. The clay mineral records exhibit periodic millennial-scale fluctuations. In the North Aegean Sea, the changes are centred at a period of 1.3-1.8 ka and can be attributed to short-term climate and weathering changes in the northern borderlands. The changes in the South Aegean Sea are centred at periods of 3.2-4.3, 1.9-2.4 and 1.3-1.7 ka reflecting short-term changes in wind strength and Northeast African hydrology.

A technique for onsite application of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry to samples from sediment cores aboard a research vessel was developed and tested. The method is sufficiently simple, precise, and fast to be used routinely for high-resolution analyses of depth profiles as well as surface samples. Analyses were performed with the compact high-performance energy-dispersive polarisation X-ray fluorescence (EDPXRF) analyser Spectro Xepos. Contents of the elements Si, Ti, Al, Fe, Mn, Mg, Ca, K, Sr, Ba, Rb, Cu, Ni, Zn, P, S, Cl and Br were simultaneously determined on 200-225 samples of each core within 24 h of recovery. This study presents a description of the employed shipboard preparation and analysis technique, along with some example data. We show land-based datasets that support our decisions to use powder samples and to reduce the original measuring time for onboard analyses. We demonstrate how well the results from shipboard measurements for the various elements compare with the land-based findings. The onboard geochemical data enabled us to establish an element stratigraphy already during the cruise. Correlation of iron, calcium and silicon enrichment trends with an older reference core provided an age model for the newly retrieved cores. The Spectro Xepos instrument performed without any analytical and technical difficulties which could have been caused by rougher weather conditions or continuous movement and vibration of the research vessel. By now, this XRF technique has been applied during three RV Meteor cruises to approximately 5,000 Late Quaternary sediment samples from altogether 23 gravity cores, 25 multicorer cores and two box cores from the eastern South Atlantic off South Africa/Namibia and the eastern Atlantic off NW Africa.

Analogous to West- and North Africa, East Africa experienced more humid conditions between approximately 12 to 5 kyr BP, relative to today. While timing and extension of wet phases in the North and West are well constrained, this is not the case for the East African Humid Period. Here we present a record of benthic foraminiferal assemblages and sediment elemental compositions of a sediment core from the East African continental slope, in order to provide insight into the regional shallow Indian Ocean paleoceanography and East African climate history of the last 40 kyr. During glacial times, the dominance of a benthic foraminiferal assemblage characterized by Bulimina aculeata, suggests enhanced surface productivity and sustained flux of organic carbon to the sea floor. During Heinrich Stadial 1 (H1), the Nuttallides rugosus Assemblage indicates oligotrophic bottom water conditions and therefore implies a stronger flow of southern-sourced AAIW to the study site. During the East African Humid Period, the Saidovina karreriana Assemblage in combination with sedimentary C/N and Fe/Ca ratios suggest higher river runoff to the Indian Ocean, and hence more humid conditions in East Africa. Between 8.5 and 8.1 kyr, contemporaneous to the globally documented 8.2 kyr Event, a severe reduction in river deposits implies more arid conditions on the continent. Comparison of our marine data with terrestrial studies suggests that additional moisture from the Atlantic Ocean, delivered by an eastward migration of the Congo Air Boundary during that time period, could have contributed to East African rainfall. Since approximately 9 kyr, the gaining influence of the Millettiana millettii Assemblage indicates a redevelopment of the East African fringe reefs.
