The tholeiitic basalts and microdolerites that comprise the Cretaceous igneous complex in the Nauru Basin in the western equatorial Pacific have moderate ranges in initial 87Sr/86Sr (0.70347 - 0.70356), initial 143Nd/144Nd (0.51278 - 0.51287), and measured 206Pb/204Pb (18.52 - 19.15), 207Pb/204Pb (15.48 - 15.66) and 208Pb/204Pb (38.28 - 38.81). These isotopic ratios overlap with those of both oceanic island basalts (OIB) and South Atlantic and Indian mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB). However, the petrography, mineralogy, and bulk rock chemistry of the igneous complex are more similar to MORB than to OIB. Also, the rare earth element contents of Nauru Basin igneous rocks are uniformly depleted in light elements (La/Sm(ch) < 1) indicative of a mantle source compositionally similar to that of MORB. These results suggest that the igneous complex is the top of the original ocean crust in the Nauru Basin, and that the notion that the crust must be 15 to 35 m.y. older based on simple extrapolation and identification of the M-sequence magnetic lineations (Larson et al., 1981, doi:10.2973/dsdp.proc.61.1981; Moberly et al., 1985, doi:10.2973/dsdp.proc.81.1984) may be invalid because of a more complicated tectonic setting. The igneous complex most probably was extruded from an ocean ridge system located near the anomalously hot, volcanically active, and isotopically distinct region in the south central Pacific which has been in existence since c. 120 Ma.

Li and Li isotopes have been measured in the clay fraction of sediments recovered from the Middle Valley hydrothermal site on the Juan De Fuca Ridge. The Li content of pure detrital clays is 51 ppm while hydrothermal clays and carbonates have lower Li (22+/-11 ppm). However, there is no clear relationship between the mineralogy of the hydrothermal alteration products and their Li content. The d7Li value of the detrital clays is +5.8?. Hydrothermal clays and carbonates have d7Li in the range of -3.9? to +7.8?; these values do not seem to be dependent on the temperature at which they formed. Modelling of the Li and Li isotope systematics indicates that the fluid from which the alteration products form is significantly enriched in Li (higher than 10000 µmol/kg) relative to pore fluids recovered from within the sediments (up to 589 µmol/kg; [Wheat, C.G., M.J. Mottl, 1994. Data report: trace metal composition of pore water from Sites 855 through 858, Middle valley, Juan De Fuca Ridge. In Mottl, M.J., Davis, E.E., Fisher, A.T., Slack, J.F. (Eds.), Proc. ODP, Sci. Res. 139: 749-755; doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.139.269.1994]), and that this Li is derived from sediment. Thus, the alteration products are not in equilibrium with their conjugate pore fluids; rather, the alteration minerals formed at lower water/sediment ratios. This suggests that fluid flow pathways at Middle Valley were more diffuse in the past than they are today.

Regional weathering intensity must have changed dramatically at high latitudes during the Quaternary as a consequence of repeated continental glaciation. Investigation of these glacial/interglacial changes at high temporal resolution is possible with the recent development of Pb isotopes in FeMn oxyhydroxide phases as a proxy for region-specific weathering intensity, where increases in the radiogenic component are thought to correspond to increased continental weathering fluxes. Here we present a Pb isotope record sourced from the FeMn oxyhydroxide fraction in marine sediments from IODP Sites U1302/3 on Orphan Knoll (~3500 mbsl, NW Atlantic), spanning the last 37 ka. Located at the eastern edge of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS), Site U1302/3 is well-placed to monitor changes in weathering intensity associated with LIS glacial history. Overall, the data show a close correspondence to local surface water d18O, with least radiogenic values during times of heavy d18O (glacial maximum) and most radiogenic values during times of light d18O (Holocene). This supports the prediction that weathering intensity in glaciated regions of the North Atlantic correlates with the exposure age of glacial debris. Superimposed on these background trends are extreme radiogenic excursions (e.g. variation in 206Pb/204Pb from ~19.2-21.0) contemporaneous with Heinrich events and the Younger Dryas. These data are substantially more radiogenic than existing records from the NW Atlantic, and most likely represent episodes of exceptionally high inputs of pre-formed FeMn oxyhydroxides during drainage of the LIS. Due to its extreme isotope composition, at least in the NW Atlantic region, Pb would appear to be a good proxy for the fluxes of weathered continental material and perhaps, by inference, nutrients to the surface ocean

At Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1090 (subantarctic South Atlantic), benthic foraminiferal stable isotope data (from Cibicidoides and Oridorsalis) span the late Oligocene through early Miocene (~24-16 Ma) at a temporal resolution of ~5 ky. Over the same interval, a magnetic polarity stratigraphy can be unequivocally correlated to the geomagnetic polarity time scale (GPTS), thereby providing direct correlation of the isotope record to the GPTS. In an initial age model, we use the newly derived age of the Oligocene/Miocene (O/M) boundary of 23.0 Ma of Shackleton et al. (2000, doi:10.1130/0091-7613(2000)28<447:ACAFTO>2.0.CO;2), revised to the new astronomical calculation (La2003) of Laskar et al (2004, doi:10.1016/j.icarus.2004.04.005) to recalculate the spline ages of Cande and Kent (1995, doi:10.1029/94JB03098). We then tune the Site 1090 dekta18O record to obliquity using La2003. In this manner, we are able to refine the ages of polarity chrons C7n through C5Cn.1n. The new age model is consistent, within one obliquity cycle, with previously tuned ages for polarity chrons C7n through C6Bn from Shackleton et al. (2000) when rescaled to La2003. The results from Site 1090 provide independent evidence for the revised age of the Oligocene/Miocene boundary of 23.0 Ma. For early Miocene polarity chrons C6AAr through C5Cn, our obliquity-scale age model is the first to allow a direct calibration to the GPTS. The new ages are generally within one obliquity cycle of those obtained by rescaling the Cande and Kent (1995) interpolation using the new age of the O/M boundary (23.0 Ma) and the same middle Miocene control point (14.8 Ma) used by Cande and Kent (1995).

Biostratigraphic, sedimentologic, and geochemical analyses of hemipelagic periplatform sediments from shallow gravity cores taken during the Ocean Drilling Program Leg 194 site survey reveal that, despite the strong currents and almost infilled intraplatform bathymetric depressions, recent sedimentation at the location of the Leg 194 drill sites recorded glacial-interglacial cycles. Sediment analyses included determination of sediment type, carbonate content, bulk stable oxygen isotope composition, and calcareous nannofossil zones. Glacial periods, identified by elevated bulk d18O, are characterized by darker sediment color, coarser grain size, and lower carbonate content, whereas interglacial periods yield lighter-colored, finer, and carbonate-rich sediments. These data from the shallowmost few meters of Marion Plateau sediments complement the subsurface information of Leg 194 holes, in which the top few meters have not been analyzed in such a high-resolution fashion. In addition, these gravity cores are more likely to have recovered the sediments closest to the sediment/water interface as compared to the hydraulic piston cores collected during Leg 194.

The stratigraphic ranges and relative abundances of selected diatoms and silicoflagellates are presented from three Neogene sedimentary sequences from the subantarctic South Atlantic. These data were compiled from Hole 699A in the southwest South Atlantic and Holes 704A and 704B in the southeast South Atlantic. Thirty-five samples were examined from a 67.5-m section of Hole 699A, which is mostly late Miocene or younger in age. A total of 225 samples was examined from the upper 569.1-m lower Miocene to Quaternary section in Holes 704A and 704B. Although the partial census of the Site 704 sequences is only preliminary, it reveals that the Neogene is remarkably complete and serves as a reference for further detailed examination of an important biostratigraphic-magnetostratigraphic reference section for the Neogene record of the Southern Ocean.

The benthic isotopic record of Miocene Cibicidoides from Site 709 provides a record of conditions in the Indian Ocean at a depth of about 3200 mbsf. As expected, the record qualitatively resembles those of other Deep Sea Drilling Project and Ocean Drilling Program sites. The data are consistent with the scenario for the evolution of thermohaline circulation in the Miocene Indian Ocean proposed by Woodruff and Savin (1989, doi:10.1029/PA004i001p00087). Further testing of that scenario, however, requires isotopic data for Cibicidoides from other Indian Ocean sites. There is a correlation between d13C values of Cibicidoides and planktonic:benthic (P:B)ratios of Site 709 sediments, implying a causal relationship between the corrosiveness of deep waters and concentration of CO2 derived from oxidation of organic matter.
