The microbial oxidation of methane controls the emission of the greenhouse gas methane from the ocean floor. However, some seabed structures such as mud volcanoes have leaky microbial methane filters and can be important sources of methane. We investigated the disturbance and recovery of a methanotrophic mud volcano microbiome (Håkon Mosby mud volcano, 1250 m water depth), to assess time scales of community succession and function in the natural deep-sea environment. We analyzed 10 surface and 5 subsurface sediment samples across HMMV mud flows from most recently discharged subsurface muds towards old consolidated muds as well as one reference site (REF) located approximately 0.5 km outside of the HMMV. Surface samples were obtained in 2003, 2009 and 2010. The surface of the new mud flows at the geographical center was sampled in 2009 and 2010. Around 100 m south of the center, we sampled more consolidated aged muds in 2003 and 2010. Old mud flows were sampled around 300 m southeast and 100 m north of the geographical center in 2003, 2009 and 2010. Surface sediment samples (0-20 cm) were recovered either by TV-guided Multicorer or by push cores using the remotely operated vehicle Quest (Marum, University Bremen). Subsurface sediments of all zones (>2 m below sea floor) were obtained in 2003 by gravity corer. After recovery, sediments were immediately subsampled in a refrigerated container (0°C) and further processed for biogeochemical analyses or preserved at -20°C for later DNA analyses. Our study show that freshly erupted muds hosted heterotrophic deep subsurface communities, which were replaced by surface communities within a few years of exposure. Aerobic methanotrophy was established at the top surface layer within less than a year, followed by anaerobic methanotrophy, sulfate reduction and finally thiotrophy. Our data indicate that it takes decades in cold environments before efficient methanotrophic communities establish to control methane emission. The observed succession provides insights to the response time of complex deep-sea communities to seafloor disturbances.

Interareal correlation has been carried out; composition of the deposits has been determined; sections recovered by marine drilling have been compared; reconstructed paleogeographic conditions confirm previous views on Jurassic and Cretaceous sedimentation in the area: 1. Determinate changes of continental and shallow marine mainly sandy Middle Jurassic deposits by sandy-clayey marine ones to the north and west occur. This indicates similar direction of clastic material migration and converse direction of Jurassic marine transgressions. 2. Increase of sand contents in the deposits also to the east and to the southeast indicates an important source of clastic material. It can result from incipience and development of the epiplatform orogen of Novaya Zemlya - Pai-Khoi in the Late Triassic - Early Jurassic. 3. Compositional and facial changes as well as changes in thicknesses of some Early Cretaceous lithologic-stratigraphic complexes indicate fast change of terrigenous material transport from the north to the south - south-east in the Late Valanginian - Hauterivian. Besides within the South Barents Sea region up to the Shtokman area there occurs weak variability in lithologic parameters of Neocomian avandeltaic deposits and turbidites composed of clays, claystones, and clayey siltstones. Correlation of drilling sections from the Shtokman area and from the South Basin of the Barents Sea together with paleotectonic analysis result to the conclusion about significant structure-forming movements in the Late Jurassic - Early Neocomian. During this time there occurred maximal growth of the Shtokman structure and likely of many other structures belonging to the South Basin of the Barents Sea.

Homeostatic regulation allows organisms to secure basic physiological processes in a varying environment. To counteract fluctuations in ambient carbonate system speciation due to elevated seawater pCO2 (hypercapnia), many aquatic crustaceans excrete/accumulate acid-base equivalents through their gills; however, not much is known about the role of ammonia in this response. The present study investigated the effects of hypercapnia on acid-base and ammonia regulation in the Dungeness crab, Metacarcinus magister on the whole animal and isolated gill levels. Hemolymph pCO2 and [HCO3]- increased in M. magister acclimated to elevated pCO2 (330 Pa), while pH remained stable. Additionally, hemolymph [Na+], [Ca2+], and [SO4]2- were significantly increased. When challenged with varying pH during gill perfusion, the pH of the artificial hemolymph remained relatively unchanged. Overall, ammonia production and excretion, as well as oxygen consumption, were reduced in crabs acclimated to elevated pCO2, demonstrating that either (amino acid) oxidation is reduced in response to this particular stress, or nitrogenous wastes are excreted in an alternative form.

Focus of this study is the analysis of a local hydrogeological system in the subhumid outer tropics in the western African country of Benin. The aim was to characterize, qualify and quantify the hydrogeological and hydrological properties of the approx. 30 km2 big study area and to develop a conceptual hydrogeological model. This model should provide the basis for further studies on a regional scale. The main goal was to obtain the process knowledge of the hydrogeological system and to determine the process and the quantity of the groundwater recharge in the working area. According to the objectives, a broad hydrogeological approach was chosen. In a spacious network on the local scale TDR probes, suction cups and groundwater observation bores were installed. Also in a multidisciplinary cooperation with hydrology, geography, soil science, biology, meteorology and plant nutrition sciences, instruments like discharge gauging stations, tensiometers, lysimeter, climate stations, runoff plots and erosion pins were installed in the test site for the investigation of the relevant parameters of the hydrological cycle.

Patterns of regeneration and burial of phosphorus (P) in the Baltic Sea are strongly dependent on redox conditions. Redox varies spatially along water depth gradients and temporally in response to the seasonal cycle and multidecadal hydrographic variability. Alongside the well-documented link between iron oxyhydroxide dissolution and release of P from Baltic Sea sediments, we show that preferential remineralization of P with respect to carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) during degradation of organic matter plays a key role in determining the surplus of bioavailable P in the water column. Preferential remineralization of P takes place both in the water column and upper sediments and its rate is shown to be redox-dependent, increasing as reducing conditions become more severe at greater water-depth in the deep basins. Existing Redfield-based biogeochemical models of the Baltic may therefore underestimate the imbalance between N and P availability for primary production, and hence the vulnerability of the Baltic to sustained eutrophication via the fixation of atmospheric N. However, burial of organic P is also shown to increase during multidecadal intervals of expanded hypoxia, due to higher net burial rates of organic matter around the margins of the deep basins. Such intervals may be characterized by basin-scale acceleration of all fluxes within the P cycle, including productivity, regeneration and burial, sustained by the relative accessibility of the water column P pool beneath a shallow halocline.

The Amon mud volcano (MV), located at 1250 m water depth on the Nile Deep Sea Fan, is known for its active emission of methane and non-methane hydrocarbons into the hydrosphere. Previous investigations showed a low efficiency of hydrocarbon-degrading anaerobic microbial communities inhabiting the Amon MV center in the presence of sulphate and hydrocarbons in the seeping subsurface fluids. By comparing spatial and temporal patterns of in situ biogeochemical fluxes, temperature gradients, pore water composition and microbial activities over three years, we investigated why the activity of anaerobic hydrocarbon degraders can be low despite high energy supplies. We found that the central dome of the Amon MV, as well as a lateral mud flow at its base, showed signs of recent exposure of hot subsurface muds lacking active hydrocarbon degrading communities. In these highly disturbed areas, anaerobic degradation of methane was less than 2% of the methane flux. Rather high oxygen consumption rates compared to low sulphide production suggest a faster development of more rapidly growing aerobic hydrocarbon degraders in highly disturbed areas. In contrast, the more stabilized muds surrounding the central gas and fluid conduits hosted active anaerobic hydrocarbon-degrading microbial communities. Furthermore, within three years, cell numbers and hydrocarbon degrading activity increased at the gas-seeping sites. The low microbial activity in the hydrocarbon-vented areas of Amon mud volcano is thus a consequence of kinetic limitations by heat and mud expulsion, whereas most of the outer mud volcano area is limited by hydrocarbon transport.

Sediment porewater oxygen profiles were measured with micro and needle electrodes in sediment cores of 27 stations in the Skagerrak (northeastern North Sea). Oxygen penetration depth ranged from 3 to 20 mm depth. Fluxes estimated from the oxygen gradients varied from 3 to 18 mmol m**-2 d**-1. Oxygen penetration and flux depend on water depth, but possibly more on the hydrological conditions, related to the import of fresh organic matter by primary production in the water column. Oxygen fluxes were not related to the total organic carbon (TOC) content of the sediments. Stations in the eastern part of the Skagerrak showed high burial rates of TOC. At 6 stations porewater chemistry of Fe, Mn and NO3- was strongly associated with the oxygen distribution. The average relative contribution of terminal electron acceptors to carbon mineralisation was estimated at 85% for O2, 0.5% for Mn, 4.5% for [NO3]3-, 1% for Fe and 9% for [SO4]2-. At one station the occurrence of exceptionally high solid manganese oxyhydroxides was probably related to an active internal manganese cycle.

Processes of early sediment diagenesis, including chemical composition of interstitial waters, content of different sulfur compounds, and rates of sulfate reduction were investigated. Along a profile from the Yenisey River to the Kara Sea, sulfate reduction intensities were high (up to 1.5 µg S/kg/day) in the delta region and in its northern part. Intensities were comparable to those found in shallow-water sediments of the North Sea. In estuarine sediments, where different transformations were possible, lower rates of bacterial sulfate reduction were observed (0.03 to 0.06 µg S/kg/day). Annual production of reduced sulfur in sediments was 24 million tons, and only 0.5 million tons (2%) were deposited. Annual consumption of organic carbon during process of sulfate reduction in the Yenisey delta region was 17.6 million tons.

Radiolabeled products were formed from labeled substrates during anaerobic incubation of sediments from Sites 618, 619, and 622. One set of experiments formed 14CO2, 14CH4, and 35SH2 from 2-14C-acetate and 35S-sulfate; a second set formed 14CH4 from 14C-methylamine or 14C-trimethylamine. Levels of 14CO2 and 35S2 formed were two to three orders of magnitude greater than 14CH4. Production of 14CH4 by Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) sediments was four to five orders of magnitude less than that formed by anoxic San Francisco Bay sediment. However, incubation of Site 622 sediment slurries under H2 demonstrated production of small quantities of CH4. These results indicate that DSDP sediments recovered from 4 to 167 m sub-bottom (age 85,000-110,000 yr.) harbor potential microbial activity which includes sulfate reducers and methanogens. Analysis of pore waters from these DSDP sites indicates that bacterial substrates (acetate, methylated amines) were present.

Higher resolution pore-water samples were recovered at intervals of 0.3 to 3 m from selected cores during Leg 119 in order to identify zones where active geochemical reactions were occurring. In addition to shipboard measurements, solid- and dissolved-phase samples were analyzed at my shore-based laboratory. Solid-phase samples were analyzed for redox conditions, carbon, total metals, and leachable metals. Pore-water samples were analyzed for ammonia, silica, sulfate, and major cations. Data are presented in tables for 400 samples from Site 739 in Prydz Bay, East Antarctica, and Sites 736, 737, 738, 744, 745, and 746 at the Kerguelen Ridge, South Indian Ocean.

Biogeochemical reef studies carried out in 1981 and 1984 found low concentration of total natural and anthropogenic hydrocarbons in inshore waters. Detection of lignin in marine and bottom sediments indicates that the land has major effect on makeup of organic matter there. Comparison of compositions of organic matter in sea water, suspended matter and bottom sediments indicated that it was altered rapidly by the reef community. Thus, in the inshore zone of the island, runoff from the land is important in supplying nutrients to the reef ecosystem alongside with transport of nutrients by deep waters. Concentrations of nutri¬ents (N, P) in the inshore zone are higher than in waters of the tropical part of the ocean. Nitrogen is the limiting element in development of phytoplankton in the inshore zone.

We present sedimentary geochemical data and in situ benthic flux measurements of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN: NO3-, NO2-, NH4+) and oxygen (O2) from 7 sites with variable sand content along 18°N offshore Mauritania (NW Africa). Bottom water O2 concentrations at the shallowest station were hypoxic (42 µM) and increased to 125 µM at the deepest site (1113 m). Total oxygen uptake rates were highest on the shelf (-10.3 mmol O2 /m2 d) and decreased quasi-exponentially with water depth to -3.2 mmol O2 /m2 d. Average denitrification rates estimated from a flux balance decreased with water depth from 2.2 to 0.2 mmol N /m2 d. Overall, the sediments acted as net sink for DIN. Observed increases in delta 15NNO3 and delta 18ONO3 in the benthic chamber deployed on the shelf, characterized by muddy sand, were used to calculate apparent benthic nitrate fractionation factors of 8.0 pro mille (15epsilon app) and 14.1 pro mille (18epsilon app). Measurements of delta 15NNO2 further demonstrated that the sediments acted as a source of 15N depleted NO2-. These observations were analyzed using an isotope box model that considered denitrification and nitrification of NH4+ and NO2-. The principal findings were that (i) net benthic 14N/15N fractionation (epsilon DEN) was 12.9 ± 1.7pro mille, (ii) inverse fractionation during nitrite oxidation leads to an efflux of isotopically light NO2- (-22 ± 1.9 pro mille), and (iii) direct coupling between nitrification and denitrification in the sediment is negligible. Previously reported epsilon DEN for fine-grained sediments are much lower (4-8 pro mille). We speculate that high benthic nitrate fractionation is driven by a combination of enhanced porewater-seawater exchange in permeable sediments and the hypoxic, high productivity environment. Although not without uncertainties, the results presented could have important implications for understanding the current state of the marine N cycle.
