The paper presents data on authigenic carbonate distribution in Holocene - Upper Pleistocene deposits of the Okhotsk, Japan, East China, Philippine and South China Seas. Description of carbonate samples, their chemical and isotope compositions are given. Chemical analysis of the samples indicates that almost all authigenic carbonates are composed of calcite or magnesian calcite; and only in one case, of siderite. Oxygen isotopic composition (d18O) ranges from +37.7 to +26.1 per mil (SMOW); it is, probably, connected with different temperatures of carbonate formation. A distinct geographic regularity is traced. Decrease in d18O values is observed from the cold Okhotsk Sea to the warm South China Sea. A very wide range of carbon isotopic composition (d13C from -42 to +3.8 per mil) indicates different sources of carbonic acid required for formation of these carbonates. As a basis for carbon isotopic composition we can distinguish three sources of carbonic acid in the studied sediments: microbiological methane oxidation, organic matter destruction during sediment diagenesis, and dissolved organogenic limestone. Thus, formation of authigenic carbonates in sediments from the marginal seas of the Northwest Pacific results from: 1) sediment diagenesis, 2) methane oxidation in zones of gas anomalies, 3) their precipitation from the supersaturated by carbonates sea shoal waters of tropical sea lagoons.

The modern Indian Ocean summer monsoon is driven by differential heating between the Asian continent and the Indian Ocean to the south. This differential heating produces a strong pressure gradient which drives southwest monsoon winds during June, July, and August. Satellite and meteorological observations, aerosol measurements, sediment trap studies, and mineralogical studies indicate an atmospheric mode of transport for modern lithogenic sediments in the northwest Arabian Sea. Analyses of lithogenic grain size and mass accumulation rate (MAR) records from the Owen Ridge indicate that eolian transport has been the primary mode of transport for the past 370 kyr. Visual inspection shows that the MAR record is positively correlated with global ice volume as indicated by the marine delta18O record. In contrast, the grain-size record varies at a much higher frequency, showing little correlation to either the MAR or the delta18O records. Spectral analyses confirm these relationships, indicating that the lithogenic grain-size and MAR records are coherent only over the precession band whereby the grain size leads the MAR by 124° (~8 kyr). We conclude that an eolian transport mechanism is the only mechanism that allows for this phase difference and at the same time is supported by comparison of the grain size and MAR with independent eolian records. We use lithogenic grain size as a paleoclimatic indicator of summer monsoon wind strength and lithogenic MAR as a paleoclimatic indicator of source-area aridity. These interpretations are supported by comparison of the lithogenic records to independent indicators of wind strength (Globigerina bulloides upwelling record) and aridity (a loess record from central China). Such comparisons indicate high coherence and zero phase relationships. Our work supports the findings of previous studies which have documented the link between monsoon strength and the Earth's axial precession cycles. Both the lithogenic MAR and the grain-size records have high coherency with precessional insolation. Maximum lithogenic MAR (source-area aridity) is in phase with delta18O (global ice volume) and leads maximum precessional insolation by 88° (~6 kyr). We attribute this lead to the influence of glacial conditions on the aridity, and therefore the deflation potential, of the source areas. Maximum lithogenic grain size (summer monsoon wind strength) lags maximum precession by 148° (~9 kyr). We attribute this lag both to the influence of global and/or local ice volume and to the availability of latent heat from the southern hemisphere Indian Ocean, the two of which combine to determine the strength of the Indian Ocean monsoon.

Species composition and abundance of phytoplankton and chlorophyll concentration were measured at three horizons of 9 stations in the Nha Trang Bay of the South China Sea in March 1998. Vertical distribution of fluorescence parameters, temperature and irradiance were measured in the 0-18 m layer of the water column at 21 stations. It was shown that according to biomass (B) and chlorophyll concentration (Chl) the Bay is mezotrophic. B and Chl in the water column increased seaward. Mean values of Chl in the southern part of the Bay exceeded those in northern part. Mean values of B were similar. B and Chl in the bottom layer exceeded ones in the upper layer. Diatoms dominated in species diversity and abundance. Diatom Guinardia striata made the main contribution to phytoplankton biomass. Similarity of phytoplankton was high. In the upper layer phytoplankton was photoinhibited during the most part of the light period, but at the bottom photosynthetic activity was high. Water column B varied in an order of magnitude during the daily cycle mainly because of B variations in the bottom layer due to tide flow.

The first detailed reconstruction of the continental palaeoclimate evolution of the Northwest German Tertiary (Late Oligocene to Pliocene) is presented. The paleoclimate data are derived from the paleobotanical record using the coexistence approach, a method recently introduced that employs climatic requirements of the Nearest Living Relatives of a fossil flora. Twenty six megafloras (fruits and seeds, leaves, woods) from the Tertiary succession of the Lower Rhine Basin and neighboring areas are analyzed with respect to ten meteorological parameters. Additionally, two sample sets from Late Miocene to Early Pliocene sediments comprising 396 palynofloras are analyzed by the same method providing a higher temporal resolution. The temperature curves show a comparatively cooler phase in the Late Oligocene, a warm interval the Middle Miocene, and a cooling starting at 14 Ma. The cooling trend persisted until Late Pliocene with a few higher frequency temperature variations observed. From the beginning of Late Miocene to the present, the seasonality increases and climate appears to have been less stable. As indicated by the precipitation data, a Cfa climate with wet summers persisted in NW Germany from Late Oligocene to Late Pliocene. The results obtained are well in accordance with regional and global isotope curves derived from the marine record, and allow for a refined correlation of the Tertiary succession in the Lower Rhine Basin with the international standard. It is shown that the reconstructed data are largely consistent with the continental climate record for the Northern Hemisphere, as reported by various authors. Discrepancies with previous reconstructions are discussed in detail.
