Boron isotope patterns preserved in cap carbonates deposited in the aftermath of the younger Cryogenian (Marinoan, ca. 635 Ma) glaciation confirm a temporary ocean acidification event on the continental margin of the southern Congo craton, Namibia. To test the significance of this acidification event and reconstruct Earth's global seawater pH states at the Cryogenian-Ediacaran transition, we present a new boron isotope data set recorded in cap carbonates deposited on the Yangtze Platform in south China and on the Karatau microcontinent in Kazakhstan. Our compiled d11B data reveal similar ocean pH patterns for all investigated cratons and confirm the presence of a global and synchronous ocean acidification event during the Marinoan deglacial period, compatible with elevated postglacial pCO2 concentrations. Differences in the details of the ocean acidification event point to regional distinctions in the buffering capacity of Ediacaran seawater.

Sediment samples collected at DSDP Leg 96 Mississippi Fan Sites 615, 616, 620, 621, and 623, Orca Basin Site 618, and Pigmy Basin Site 619 were analyzed for 22 major, minor, and trace elements. This study was undertaken to document the downhole variability in inorganic geochemistry between sites. The mineralogy of the clays, including those from Sites 614, 617, and 622 on the fan, was determined by X-ray diffraction to define the principal clay minerals present at the sites, examine any downhole trends in clay mineralogy, and aid in the interpretation of the geochemical signature of the sediments. Clay mineral composition at all the sites is smectite:illite:chlorite:kaolinite in the approximate percentage ratio 50:20:20:10. Geochemical results indicate only slight variation between and within the sites, with the exception of a discrete unit of carbonates that occurs near the bottom of Site 615. Variation in the major, minor, and trace element composition can be explained by a change in the relative abundance of quartz, clay minerals, and carbonates.

Site 1143 is located at 9°21.72'N, 113°17.11'E, at a water depth of 2772 m within a basin on the southern continental margin of the South China Sea. Three holes were cored at the site and combined into a composite (spliced) stratigraphic section that documents complete recovery for the upper 190.85 meters composite depth, the interval of advanced piston coring (Wang, Prell, Blum, et al., 2000, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.184.2000; Wang et al., 2001, doi:10.1007/BF02907085). The early Pliocene to Holocene sediment sequence provided abundant and well-preserved calcareous microfossils and offered an excellent opportunity to establish foraminiferal stable isotope records. Here, we present benthic and planktonic d18O and d13C records that cover the last 5 m.y. These data sets will provide an important basis for upcoming studies to generate an orbitally tuned oxygen isotope stratigraphy and examine long- and short-term changes in deep and surface water mass signatures (temperature, salinity, and nutrients) with an average sample spacing of ~2.9 k.y. for the benthic and ~2.6 k.y. for the planktonic records.

The landward part of the 7 km wide sabkha at Umm Said, SE Qatar, is filled with a stagnant brine virtually saturated with halite. Recent dolomite occurs in the sabkha sediments, the quantity being fully accounted for by the amount of Mg++ ions lost from the interstitial brine. The existence of a reflux system in the seaward parts of the sabkha was established. It was not, however, possible to gi ve any unequivocal demonstration of the effect of this potential system for dolomitization . Although both a reflux mechanism and Recent dolomite formation occur in this tidal flat, the first process has apparently not influenced the second sufficiently to permit the demonstration of reflux dolomitization.
