Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 114 recovered nannofossil-bearing sediments from seven sites in the high latitudes of the South Atlantic Ocean. Cretaceous sections were recovered from Sites 698 and 700, located on the Northeast Georgia Rise and its lower flanks, respectively. These contain distinctive high-latitude nannofossil floras similar to those from high-latitude areas of the Northern Hemisphere. Most of the biostratigraphic datums used to date the upper Campanian to Maestrichtian interval appear to lie at approximately the same level in both hemispheres. The FAD of Nephrolithus frequens is confirmed to be diachronous with an earlier occurrence in high latitudes. The LAD of Monomarginatus primus n. sp. also appears to be diachronous with a later LAD in the high latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere. Fossiliferous Paleocene to lowermost Miocene sediments were recovered at all seven sites, from the Northeast Georgia Rise in the west to the Meteor Rise in the east. These nannofossil floras, although restricted in diversity and only poorly preserved, are sufficiently distinctive to allow the recognition of 19 zones and three subzones, which are used to date and correlate the cores recovered. Only Site 704 on the Meteor Rise yielded a substantial section of Miocene to Quaternary nannofossil-rich sediments. The nannofossil floras of this section are of very low diversity, with usually fewer than eight species present. Some stratigraphic ranges of important biostratigraphic datum species are observed to be different in the high-latitude sections from those recorded from low-latitude areas. The LAD of Reticulofenestra bisecta, when calibrated by magnetostratigraphy, appears to occur earlier in Hole 699A (within Chron C6CR) than in Hole 703A and possibly Hole 704B and in other published accounts of lower latitude sites in the South Atlantic. The FAD of Nannotetrina fulgens/N. cristata appears to occur later in Hole 702B (Chron C20R) than it does in other published accounts of lower latitude sites in the South Atlantic. Diachroneity is also suspected in the stratigraphic ranges of Chiasmolithus solitus and Chiasmolithus oamaruensis, although poor magnetostratigraphic results through the critical interval prevent confirmation of this. Differences in the relative stratigraphic ranges of lsthmolithus recurvus and Cribrocentrum coenurumlC. reticulatum at Sites 699 and 703 are noted. These possibly suggest warmer surface waters on the eastern side (Site 703) of the middle to late Eocene South Atlantic than those on the western side (Site 699). The diversities of the nannofossil floras and the presence of the warm-water genera Discoaster, Sphenolithus, Helicosphaera, and Amaurolithus reflect the changing surface water temperatures throughout the Cenozoic. Warmer periods are inferred for the late Paleocene to early middle Eocene, late middle Eocene to late Eocene, latest Oligocene to earliest Miocene, and possibly the Pliocene. Colder periods are inferred for the middle Eocene, most of the Oligocene, and the Miocene. Dramatic changes in the nannofossil floras of the Pleistocene of Site 704 are thought to reflect a rapidly changing environment. Monomarginatus primus, a new species from the Upper Cretaceous strata of Hole 700B, is described.

We report the paleomagnetic and rock magnetic results from discrete sample analysis of sediments from Walvis Ridge, Leg 208 of the Ocean Drilling Program. In an effort to refine the shipboard magnetostratigraphy, alternating field and thermal demagnetization of discrete samples were carried out, predominantly on samples from Sites 1262 and 1267. Results are generally consistent with the shipboard pass-through cryomagnetometer data, though in some cases the discrete samples resolved ambiguities in the reversal record. Significantly, the C24r/C24n reversal boundary was identified at Sites 1262 and 1267, and most boundaries in the Paleocene and Upper Cretaceous sections are now identified to within 10-30 cm. Magnetic mineralogy results show that prior to the late Miocene, the predominant detrital magnetic component was coarse-grained magnetite and that after the late Miocene, titanomagnetite has also been present. This suggests a possible change in detrital source at that time.

Ever since its discovery, Eocene Thermal Maximum 2 (ETM2; ~53.7 Ma) has been considered as one of the "little brothers" of the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM; ~56 Ma) as it displays similar characteristics including abrupt warming, ocean acidification, and biotic shifts. One of the remaining key questions is what effect these lesser climate perturbations had on ocean circulation and ventilation and, ultimately, biotic disruptions. Here we characterize ETM2 sections of the NE Atlantic (Deep Sea Drilling Project Sites 401 and 550) using multispecies benthic foraminiferal stable isotopes, grain size analysis, XRF core scanning, and carbonate content. The magnitude of the carbon isotope excursion (0.85-1.10 per mil) and bottom water warming (2-2.5°C) during ETM2 seems slightly smaller than in South Atlantic records. The comparison of the lateral d13C gradient between the North and South Atlantic reveals that a transient circulation switch took place during ETM2, a similar pattern as observed for the PETM. New grain size and published faunal data support this hypothesis by indicating a reduction in deepwater current velocity. Following ETM2, we record a distinct intensification of bottom water currents influencing Atlantic carbonate accumulation and biotic communities, while a dramatic and persistent clay reduction hints at a weakening of the regional hydrological cycle. Our findings highlight the similarities and differences between the PETM and ETM2. Moreover, the heterogeneity of hyperthermal expression emphasizes the need to specifically characterize each hyperthermal event and its background conditions to minimalize artifacts in global climate and carbonate burial models for the early Paleogene.

We have compiled the first stratigraphically continuous high-resolution benthic foraminiferal stable isotope record for the Paleocene from a single site utilizing cores recovered at Pacific ODP Site 1209. The long-term trend in the benthic isotope record suggests a close coupling of volcanic CO2 input and deep sea warming. Over the short-term the record is characterized by slow excursions with a pronounced periodic beat related to the short (100-kyr) and long (405-kyr) eccentricity cycle. The phase relationship between the benthic isotope record and eccentricity is similar to patterns documented for the Oligocene and Miocene confirming the role of orbital forcing as the pace maker for paleoclimatic variability on Milankovitch time scales. In addition, the record documents an unusual transient warming of 2°C coeval with a 0.6 per mil carbon isotope excursion and a decrease in carbonate content at 61.75 Ma. This event, which bears some resemblance to Eocene hyperthermals, marks the onset of a long-term decline in d13C. The timing indicates it might be related to the initiation of volcanism along Greenland margin.

Synthetic mass accumulation rates have been calculated for ODP Site 707 using depth-density and depth-porosity functions to estimate values for these parameters with increasing sediment thickness, at 1 Ma time intervals determined on the basis of published microfossil datums. These datums were the basis of the age model used by Peterson and Backman (1990, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.115.163.1990) to calculate actual mass accumulation rate data using density and porosity measurements. A comparison is made between the synthetic and actual mass accumulation rate values for the time interval 37 Ma to the Recent for 1 Myr time intervals. There is a correlation coefficient of 0.993 between the two data sets, with an absolute difference generally less than 0.1 g/cm**2/kyr. We have used the method to extend the mass accumulation rate analysis back to the Late Paleocene (60 Ma) for Site 707. Providing age datums (e.g. fossil or magnetic anomaly data) are available the generation of synthetic mass accumulation rates can be calculated for any sediment sequence.

Radiolarian cherts in the Tethyan realm of Jurassic age were recently interpreted as resulting from high biosiliceous productivity along upwelling zones in subequatorial paleolatitudes the locations of which were confirmed by revised paleomagnetic estimates. However, the widespread occurrence of cherts in the Eocene suggests that cherts may not always be reliable proxies of latitude and upwelling zones. In a new survey of the global spatio-temporal distribution of Cenozoic cherts in Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) and Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) sediment cores, we found that cherts occur most frequently in the Paleocene and early Eocene, with a peak in occurrences at ~50 Ma that is coincident with the time of highest bottom water temperatures of the early Eocene climatic optimum (EECO) when the global ocean was presumably characterized by reduced upwelling efficiency and biosiliceous productivity. Cherts occur less commonly during the subsequent Eocene global cooling trend. Primary paleoclimatic factors rather than secondary diagenetic processes seem therefore to control chert formation. This timing of peak Eocene chert occurrence, which is supported by detailed stratigraphic correlations, contradicts currently accepted models that involve an initial loading of large amounts of dissolved silica from enhanced weathering and/or volcanism in a supposedly sluggish ocean of the EECO, followed during the subsequent middle Eocene global cooling by more vigorous oceanic circulation and consequent upwelling that made this silica reservoir available for enhanced biosilicification, with the formation of chert as a result of biosilica transformation during diagenesis. Instead, we suggest that basin-basin fractionation by deep-sea circulation could have raised the concentration of EECO dissolved silica especially in the North Atlantic, where an alternative mode of silica burial involving widespread direct precipitation and/or absorption of silica by clay minerals could have been operative in order to maintain balance between silica input and output during the upwelling-deficient conditions of the EECO. Cherts may therefore not always be proxies of biosiliceous productivity associated with latitudinally focused upwelling zones.

Two of five holes drilled at two separate sites during Leg 123 of the Ocean Drilling Program intersected thick and relatively complete sections of Upper Cretaceous-Paleogene nannofossiliferous sediments. Although dominated by turbidite deposition in the upper part, Hole 765C contains a thick and relatively complete Albian-Oligocene section, including a particularly thick Aptian interval, with abundant and fairly well-preserved nannofossils. Several unconformities are confidently interpreted in this section that span much of the Santonian, late Campanian, Maestrichtian, late Eocene, and early Oligocene. Hole 766A contains a thick and relatively complete Albian-lower Eocene section having generally abundant and well-preserved nannofossils. Several unconformities also have been identified in this section that span much of the Coniacian, early Campanian, Maestrichtian, and late Eocene through early Pliocene. The chronostratigraphic position and length of all these unconformities may have considerable significance for reconstructing the sedimentary history and for interpreting the paleoceanography of this region. A particularly thick section of upper Paleocene-lower Eocene sediments, including a complete record across the Paleocene/Eocene boundary, also was cored in Hole 766A that contains abundant and diverse nannofossil assemblages. Although assemblages from this section were correlated successfully using a standard low-latitude zonation, difficulties were encountered that reduced biostratigraphic resolution. Several lines of evidence suggest a mid-latitude position for Site 766 during this time, including (1) high assemblage diversity characteristic of mid-latitude zones of upwelling and (2) absence of certain ecologically controlled markers found only in low latitudes.

Clay mineralogical and inorganic geochemical data from the Campanian to the Pleistocene provide information bearing on the evolution of both continental and marine paleoenvironments in the Walvis Ridge area. (1) Alteration processes of basalts occurred under subaerial conditions during the Campanian and Maestrichtian and were virtually absent in deeper marine environments. (2) Strong tectonic effects were present during the Campanian and persisted until the early Eocene. (3) Subsidence of this part of the Walvis Ridge became important during the late Maestrichtian and continued into the Paleocene and Eocene. (4) The influence of global climatic cooling was evident from the late Eocene on. (5) Modification of oceanic circulation and the increasing influence of surface and deep water masses on the sedimentation characterized the Cenozoic.

The oxygen and carbon isotopic composition has been measured for numerous Paleogene planktonic foraminifer species from Maud Rise, Weddell Sea (ODP Sites 689 and 690), the first such results from the Antarctic. The results provide information about large-scale changes in the evolution of temperatures, seasonally, and structure of the upper water column prior to the development of a significant Antarctic cryosphere. The early Paleocene was marked by cooler surface-water conditions compared to the Cretaceous and possibly a less well developed thermocline. The late Paleocene and early Eocene saw the expansion of the thermocline as Antarctic surface waters became warm-temperate to subtropical. The late Paleocene to early Eocene thermal maximum was punctuated by two brief excursions during which time the entire Antarctic water column warmed and the meridional temperature gradient was reduced. The first of these excursions occurred at the Paleocene/Eocene boundary, in association with a major extinction in deep sea benthic foraminifers. The second excursion occurred within the early Eocene at ~54.0 Ma. These excursions are of global importance and represent the warmest intervals of the entire Cenozoic. The excursions were associated with fundamental changes in deep-water circulation and global heat transport. The thermal maximum of the early Eocene ended with the initiation of a long-term cooling trend at 52.0 Ma. This cooling trend was associated with reduced seasonality, and diminished structure and/or duration of the seasonal thermocline. The cooling trend was punctuated by three major cooling steps at 43.0, 40.0, and -36.0 Ma.

Three uppermost Cretaceous through basal Paleocene stratigraphic sequences are examined for planktic foraminiferal assemblage stability and temporal succession patterns. These sequences are at mid-latitude South Atlantic DSDP Site 528, then-equatorial Pacific DSDP Site 577 and the Tethyan shelf Ben Gurion section of the Negev, Israel. In order to better estimate biogeographic patterns and habitat preferences, the results of these analyses are compared to previous Cretaceous biogeographic studies and to previous analyses of Cretaceous-Tertiary (K/T) boundary shelf and epicontinental sections. Results indicate that immediately following the K/T boundary, the examined epicontinental and open-ocean sites were exploited primarily by previously epicontinental planktic foraminiferal assemblages. This pattern of K/T boundary assemblage dominance suggests the geologically instantaneous break-down of Late Cretaceous epicontinental and open-ocean biogeographic provincialization. This shift in open-ocean foraminiferal assemblages is not consistent with models of nonselective K/T boundary extinctions, but is consistent with models of extinction resistence and offshore expansion of nearshore taxa. The re-establishment of stable biogeographic differences between open-ocean and epicontinental planktic foraminiferal assemblages occurs by the basal Parvularugoglobigerina eugubina Zone. At open-ocean sites 528 and 577 and the outershelf Ben Gurion section, P0 and P. eugubina Zone faunal records are marked by a pronounced alternation between Paleocene biserial- and non-biserial-dominated assemblages, This alternation appears strongly damped at shelf and epicontinental sections previously examined. The first appearance and peak magnitude of abundant earliest Paleocene trochospiral forms (Parvularugoglobigerina, Eoglobigerina, Morozovella, Globoconusa) also vary from site to site and may depend closely on levels of primary carbonate productivity.
