Early Cretaceous volcanic rocks of the Mariisky sequence and Early Cenozoic extrusive-vent rocks of the Mary Cape are exposed at the most northwest of the Schmidt Peninsula, North Sakhalin. In chemical composition, all the rocks are subdivided into four groups. Three groups include volcanic rocks of the Mariisky sequence, which consists, from bottom to top, of calc-alkaline rocks, transitional calc-alkaline-tholeiite rocks, and incompatible element-depleted tholeiites. These rocks show subduction geochemical signatures and are considered as a fragment of the Moneron-Samarga island arc system. Trace-element modeling indicates their derivation through successive melting of a garnet-bearing mantle and garnet-free shallower mantle sources containing amphibole; pyroxene; and, possibly, spinel. The mixed subduction and intra-plate characteristics of the extrusive vent rocks of the Mary Cape attest to their formation in a transform continental margin setting.

Seven manganese nodules, eight ferromanganiferous shales from the Cretaceous Wai Bua Formation of Timor, and a pelagic limestone with four ferromanganese enriched layers from the Middle Eocene of Timor have been analysed. The nodules are compared with modern deep-sea nodules, and the ferromanganiferous shales are contrasted with relatively shallow marine manganiferous shales. The conclusion is reached that these rocks from Timor were probably deposited in a bathypelagic environment. There is a total absence of any indication that volcanic material has contributed to these deposits. The chemical composition of the ferromanganiferous rocks are discussed and some indications of biogenic influences are noted. The Middle Eocene pelagic limestone is compared with a similar modern sediment described from the Easter Island Rise in the Pacific.

The technique of 40Ar-39Ar step-heating dating was applied to three rock samples from core of DSDP Site 443, one sample from Site 445, and four samples at Site 446. All sites were drilled during DSDP Leg 58. At Site 443 (Shikoku Basin), about 116 meters of basalt basement was drilled. Three samples were chosen for dating from different levels in the basalt; two samples are aphyric basalt, and the other is subophitic dolerite. At Site 445 (Daito Ridge), no basement rock was drilled; however, conglomeratic sandstone was cored in the lower part of the hole. 40Ar-39Ar dating was applied to a basalt pebble in the conglomerate. At Site 446 (Daito Basin), the lower cored sequence is clay stone interlayered with 16 basalt sills. Four samples were chosen from sills at different levels.

The conventional model of leaching volcanic rocks as a source of metals in a seafloor hydrothermal systems has been tested by examining the behavior of Pb and other trace elements during hydrothermal alteration. ODP Leg 193 drill sites 1188 (Snowcap) and 1189 (Roman Ruins) on Pual Ridge in the eastern Manus Basin offshore eastern Papua New Guinea provide a unique three-dimensional window into an active back-arc hydrothermal system. We investigate by means of a LA-ICP-MS microbeam technique the capacity of Pb to be leached from a host volcanic rock exposed to various types and intensities of alteration. Our results are in general agreement with previous studies that utilized bulk analytical techniques but provide a more detailed explanation of the processes. Fresh representative dacitic lavas from the Pual Ridge have an average whole rock Pb content of 5.2 ppm, an average interstitial glass Pb content of 5.6 ppm and an average plagioclase Pb content of 1.0 ppm. Altered matrix samples have highly variable Pb values ranging from 0 to 52.4 ppm. High Pb values in altered samples are associated with a low temperature chlorite and clay mineral assemblage, in some cases overprinted by a high temperature (up to 350°C) silica-rich "bleaching" alteration. Only the most highly altered matrix samples have REE patterns that differ from the fresh Pual Ridge dacite. This may represent either different lava histories or alteration characteristics that have affected normally immobile REEs. Altered samples with the highest Pb values have similar REE patterns to those of the local unaltered lavas. They are compositionally similar to typical Pual Ridge dacites indicating a genetic relationship between the main regional volcanic suite and the subseafloor hydrothermally altered, Pb-enriched material. Relative loss/gain for Pb between the analyzed altered samples and a calculated precursor show a maximum relative gain of 901%. Samples with relative Pb gain from both drill sites are associated with lower temperature alteration mineral assemblages characterized by pervasive chloritization. The related lower temperature (220-250°C) neutral to slightly acidic fluids have been ascribed by others to return circulation of hydrothermal fluids that did not interact with seawater. Because altered samples have a higher Pb content than the fresh precursor, leaching of fresh volcanic rocks cannot be the source of Pb in the hydrothermal systems.

The paper is devoted to a marine geophysical-geological research in the West Antarctic. This researche contributed to establishing the base geodesic network of the West Antarctic and supplemented geokinematic monitoring based on this network with geophysical and geologic information on structure and features of geomorphological and tectonic development of the South Ocean floor. Collected materials allow to conclude about the inhomogeneity of the Scotia Sea floor and about combination of fragments of a continental massif with young rift structures in conditions of the upwelling mantle. The ancient continental bridge, faunal connections between the South America and the West Antarctic has been destroyed by processes of destruction, taphrogeny and sea floor spreading. Structures of the Scotia and Caribbean Seas, North Fiji and Arctic Basins are similar.

The Marcus Necker Rise has two geologically distinct parts: the western one is composed of the Marcus Wake seamounts and the eastern one of the Wake-Necker seamounts. The first contain differentiated alkali basaltoids, while the second show a distinctive prolonged and complicated history. The latter contain Early Cretaceous olivine basalts and Late Cretaceous alkali and hornblende basaltoids.

In terms of physical and genetic features studied nodules are assigned to the sedimentational manganese-iron type (Canary Basin) and to the iron-containing type (Guyana Basin). They are enriched in Fe, Co and Pb and depleted in Mn, Ni, Cu, and Zn. Cores of the nodules from the Canary Basin consist primarily of peridotite, gabbro, dolerite, and metamorphic rock. Great predominance of peridotite and gabbro indicates that blocks of ocean crust underwent considerable displacement, bringing the third and fourth layers of a crust to the surface.
