The main stages of the sedimentary cycle of uranium in modern marine basins are under consideration in the book. Annually about 18 thousand tons of dissolved and suspended uranium enters the ocean with river runoff. Depending on a type of a marine basin uranium accumulated either in sediments of deep-sea basins, or in sediments of continental shelves and slopes. In the surface layer of marine sediments hydrogenic uranium is predominantly bound with organic matter, and in ocean sediments also with iron, manganese and phosphorus. In diagenetic processes there occurs partial redistribution of uranium in sediments, as well as its concentration in iron-manganese, phosphate and carbonate nodules and biogenic phosphate detritus. Concentration of uranium in marine sediments of various types depending on their composition, as well as on forms of its entering, degree of differentiation and of sedimentation rates, on hydrochemical regime and water circulation, and on intensity of diagenetic processes.

A controversy currently exists regarding the number of Toba eruptive events represented in the tephra occurrences across peninsular India. Some claim the presence of a single bed, the 75,000-yr-old Toba tephra; others argue that dating and archaeological evidence suggest the presence of earlier Toba tephra. Resolution of this issue was sought through detailed geochemical analyses of a comprehensive suite of samples, allowing comparison of the Indian samples to those from the Toba caldera in northern Sumatra, Malaysia, and, importantly, the sedimentary core at ODP Site 758 in the Indian Ocean - a core that contains several of the earlier Toba tephra beds. In addition, two samples of Toba tephra from western India were dated by the fission-track method. The results unequivocally demonstrate that all the presently known Toba tephra occurrences in peninsular India belong to the 75,000 yr B.P. Toba eruption. Hence, this tephra bed can be used as an effective tool in the correlation and dating of late Quaternary sedimentary sequences across India and it can no longer be used in support of a middle Pleistocene age for associated Acheulian artifacts.

Current geochronological data on the Okhotsk-Chukotka volcanic belt (OCVB) and relevant problems are discussed. The belt evolution is suggested to be modeled based on 40Ar/39Ar and U-Pb dates more useful in several aspects than common K-Ar or Rb-Sr dates and methods of paleobotanical correlation. Based on new40Ar/39Ar and U-Pb dates obtained for volcanic rocks in the OCVB northern part, the younger (Coniacian) age is established for lower stratigraphic units in the Central Chukotka segment of the belt, and eastward migration of volcanic activity is shown for terminal stages of this structure evolution.

I received five unoriented samples of igneous rocks from four Sites of Leg 64 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP). I have measured several magnetic properties, alkalis (K, Rb, and Cs), alkaline-earth (Ba and Sr) element concentrations, and 87Sr/86Sr ratios of these samples. This study reports the results.

Neutron activation analyses of iridium and other chemical elements were performed across a 1-m-thick, partly nonbioturbated, clay-rich interval at the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary in ODP Hole 738C. The results show that the boundary interval holds one of the highest Ir enrichments (320 ng Ir/cm2) of all known Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary layers. Iridium concentrations are highest (18 ppb Ir, whole-rock samples) a few centimeters above the base of the clayrich interval and gradually tail off upsection. Compared with background levels the most Ir-rich interval also shows strongly enhanced concentrations of Cr (215 ppm) and slightly elevated Co concentrations (13 ppm). The Ir-rich interval shows low As (< 15 ppm) and Sb (<0.8 ppm) concentrations, a fact that is congruent with absence of abundant authigenic sulfides in the sediment. Irregularly distributed Fe enrichments and a greenish gray color of the Fe-rich intervals may indicate the presence of glauconitic clay minerals and suboxic, slightly reducing conditions during deposition. Rare earth element (REE) abundance patterns change considerably across the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary interval, reflecting either a change in Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary seawater REE composition or the occurrence of different REE fractionation processes due to changing depositional environment. Element-vs.-element ratios of Hf, Ta, Th, U, Cs, and Sc are similar between the most Ir-rich layers of the boundary section and other levels with lower Ir concentrations. This may imply that the clay fraction of the Ir-rich layers of the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary interval is made up predominantly of locally derived material. Calculated calcite-free abundances of Hf, Ta, Th, U, Cs, and Sc, on the other hand, are reconcilable with an extraneous origin of the bulk of the clay in the most Ir-rich layers. The Ir in the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary clay-rich zone in Hole 738C is most likely derived from an earth-impacting asteroid; however, the origin of the clay-rich zone remains enigmatic.

A substantial extinction of megafauna occurred in Australia between 50 and 45 kyr ago, a period that coincides with human colonization of Australia. Large shifts in vegetation also occurred around this time, but it is unclear whether the vegetation changes were driven by the human use of fire-and thus contributed to the extinction event-or were a consequence of the loss of megafaunal grazers. Here we reconstruct past vegetation changes in southeastern Australia using the stable carbon isotopic composition of higher plant wax n-alkanes and levels of biomass burning from the accumulation rates of the biomarker levoglucosan from a well-dated sediment core offshore from the Murray-Darling Basin. We find that from 58 to 44 kyr ago, the abundance of plants with the C-4 carbon fixation pathway was generally high-between 60 and 70%. By 43 kyr ago, the abundance of C-4 plants dropped to 30% and biomass burning increased. This transient shift lasted for about 3,000 years and came after the period of human arrival and directly followed megafauna extinction at 48.9-43.6 kyr ago. We conclude that the vegetation shift was not the cause of the megafaunal extinction in this region. Instead, our data are consistent with the hypothesis that vegetation change was the consequence of the extinction of large browsers and led to the build-up of fire-prone vegetation in the Australian landscape.

In a study of ODP Hole 689B no iridium (Ir) anomaly was found in Sections 1 through 6 of Core 25X or in Core 26X from the top down to section 2, 3-12 cm. The background Ir abundance averaged 11 parts per trillion (ppt) and a clay-enriched region had nearly the same average, 26 ± 12 ppt. If the Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) contact is in the region studied, then sedimentation was not continuous, and the K-T boundary was probably either not deposited or it was eroded away. In a study of Cores 15X and 16X of ODP Hole 690C, an iridium peak with a maximum abundance of 1566 ± 222 ppt was found in Section 4 of Core 15X at 39-40 cm with a half-width of 6.6 cm. Background abundances were ~15 ppt and distinctly higher Ir abundances were observed from 119 cm below to 72 cm above the main peak. The Ir distribution below the main peak is attributed to bioturbation by organisms with burrows extending at least 0.4 m. The Ir distribution above the main peak may be due to the same cause but other explanations may be significant. There are variable enrichments of clay in the mainly CaCO3 sediment of Core 15X, and the stratigraphically lowest part of the most abundant clay deposits is found (within 2 cm) in the same position as the main Ir peak. The clay deposit, which is estimated to be about 50% of the sediment, extends upward ~19 cm and then slowly decreases to a background level of 10% over 1 m. The degree of homogeneity of the clay-rich interval suggests it was not due to episodic volcanism but may have been due to a decrease of the CaCO3 deposition rate which was possibly triggered by the impact of a large asteroid or comet on the Earth.

A large fragment of a paleovolcano of Silurian to Early Devonian age was discovered in the Voikar volcanic belt suggesting an ensimatic island are as its geodynamic environment. Formationally, the rocks under study are comparable to Pleistocene island arc volcanites and their paleo-analogues. The volcanites of the Toupugol complex underwent strong hydrothermal-metasomatic alteration: propylites, acid metasomatic rocks and quartz-carbonate veins, which must have resulted from hydrothermal-metasomatic alteration of andesitoids. Both volcanites and apovolcanic hydrothermal rocks in Toupugol were found to host noble metal mineralisation. It is found in close association with sulphides, particularly pyrite. Free gold was discovered in all investigated volcanites and hydrothermal rocks and is characterised by low mercury content and an unusual set of microimpurities (Pt, Pd, Cu, Fe, S) suggesting its links to the mantle substrate.
