Dataset containing macrobenthos data for samples collected during September 2008 in the North-West Black Sea (between 44°46' - 43°45' N latitude and 30° 11' - 29°35' E longitude). Macrobenthos sampling was done in 4 stations using a 0.14 m**2 Van Veen grab. Washing of the sample through two sieves - 1 mm and 0.25 mm mesh size; the material retained by the two sieves was examined at the binocular microscope; all animals were extracted, using fine tweezers and the species or group of species were identified and counted (in order to determine the density of populations); the larger organisms were measured and weighed (structure and biomass); for smaller organisms, the average wet weights inscribed in standard tables were used to calculate the biomass. Taxonomic identification was done at the GeoEcoMar by A. Teaca and T. Begun using the relevant taxonomic literature ( "Key-book for the identification of the Black Sea and Sea of Azov Fauna, 1968 -1972, Kiev - in Russian, V 1-4; BACESCU, M.C., MÜLLER, G. I., GOMOIU, M.-T., 1971). BACESCU, M.C., MÜLLER, G. I., GOMOIU, M.-T., 1971-Benthic ecological research to Black Sea. Comparative quantitative and qualitative analyse of pontic benthic fauna. Comparison of daily and diel variability of chlorophyll-a concentration at three long-term stations in meso- and eutrophic regions indicates that their values are similar. Daily patterns of deviation in chlorophyll concentration in small and large phytoplankton fraction from average daily values are presented. In conformity with a hypothesis of daily removal rhythms correlated with changes in diel light-dark periods, it was concluded that the mesotrophic region during the dark period is characterized by predominance of grazing on large phytoplankton in the upper layers and accumulation of detritus from cell fragments in the lower layer, while during the light period smaller phytoplankton predominantly grazed. The eutrophic region is characterized by predominance of grazing on small phytoplankton fraction in the upper layers during the dark period and settling out of fecal pellets containing chlorophyll into deeper depths; but during the light period, large phytoplankton predominantly grazed throughout the whole water layer.

Results of heat-flow measurements in the western Black Sea and within the African-Sicilian region of the Mediterranean Sea are presented. New data reveal a well-defined correlation with the deep-seated geologic structure of the regions examined. A heat-flow anomaly within the Pantelleria graben, in the authors' opinion, is a consequence of connective heat transfer along channels of disjunctive faults.

Measurements of 14 vertical profiles of currents and hydrological parameters in the near-bottom layer with depth resolution of 0.1 m were carried out in several regions of the Black Sea shelf, at five points over the continental slope, and in three deep water regions. The upper boundary of the benthic boundary layer (BBL) was reliably determined at a point at distance from 5-7 to 35-40 m from the bottom where the gradients of density and current velocity changed. Experimental data obtained were used to determine the coefficient of bottom friction, friction velocity, coefficients of vertical diffusion of momentum and density, and vertical fluxes of temperature and salinity in the BBL.
