Kimmeridgian-Tithonian red marly limestones and Berriasian white limestones were recovered at Site 534 of DSDP Leg 76 in the western North Atlantic. These yielded a well-defined magnetostratigraphy with the characteristic magnetization carried by hematite in red sediments and magnetite in white sediments. The polarity sequence is correlated to the magnetostratigraphy of Kimmeridgian-Tithonian-Berriasian pelagic carbonates of northern Italy and southern Spain, allowing precise biostratigraphic age correlations. The Berriasian/Tithonian boundary occurs within the upper half of Core 90, the late Tithonian/early Tithonian boundary at the base of Core 96, and the Tithonian/Kimmeridgian boundary at the top of Core 102. Correlations are also made to M-16 through M-22 of the marine magnetic anomaly M-sequence. Poor recovery and irregular magnetic properties of the underlying Kimmeridgian-Oxfordian-Callovian marls and claystones prevented determination of a polarity sequence, but the entire interval has mixed polarity. Valanginian gray marly limestones have very weak magnetizations, and preliminary results are inadequate to determine the polarity pattern.

The paleomagnetic measurement procedure at Site 503 was similar to that described for Site 502 (See preceding chapter). Each core section was measured with the longcore spinner magnetometer at 10-cm intervals. In addition, one or more discrete samples were taken from each core section for measurement of the total magnetic vector and its stability against progressive AF demagnetization. There were noteworthy differences in conditions at Site 503, however, that affected the quality and interpretation of the magnetic data and require comment. The most serious problem we encountered was the presence of rust scale from the drill string. Although the dark flecks typically were concentrated near the top of every recovered sediment core, they also smeared down a meter or more between the core liner and sediment, even when the sediment showed no indication of drilling disturbance. Individual rust scales proved to be highly magnetic - presumably because they incorporate small pieces of unoxidized metal. The anomalously high remanent intensities, several orders of magnitude above the uncontaminated sediment values, and scattered remanent directions observed in long-core magnetic measurements on many cores from Site 503 could be attributed to the presence of rust scale.

Measurements were made of the magnetic properties of 13 sediment samples from cores spanning the entire depth of Hole 503A. The principal aim was to make a preliminary assessment of the magnetic fabric of material obtained from hydraulic piston coring (HPC) which, though considerably bioturbated, might retain substantial traces of any depositional alignment of magnetic grains. Earlier measurements on Deep Sea Drilling Project cores (Rees, 1971; Rees and Frederick, 1974; Hailwood and Sayre, 1979) suggested that the improved HPC sampling technique should, other things being equal, provide good magnetic fabric information. The Hole 503A sediments were known from shipboard measurements to possess comparatively strong stable remanence and therefore seemed likely subjects for this assessment.

We used piston cores recovered in the western Bering Sea to reconstruct millennial-scale changes in marine productivity and terrigenous matter supply over the past ~180 kyr. Based on a geochemical multi-proxy approach, our results indicate closely interacting processes controlling marine productivity and terrigenous matter supply comparable to the situation in the Okhotsk Sea. Overall, terrigenous inputs were high, whereas export production was low. Minor increases in marine productivity occurred during intervals of Marine Isotope Stage 5 and interstadials, but pronounced maxima were recorded during interglacials and Termination I. The terrigenous material is suggested to be derived from continental sources on the eastern Bering Sea shelf and to be subsequently transported via sea ice, which is likely to drive changes in surface productivity, terrigenous inputs, and upper-ocean stratification. From our results we propose glacial, deglacial, and interglacial scenarios for environmental change in the Bering Sea. These changes seem to be primarily controlled by insolation and sea-level forcing which affect the strength of atmospheric pressure systems and sea-ice growth. The opening history of the Bering Strait is considered to have had an additional impact. High-resolution core logging data (color b*, XRF scans) strongly correspond to the Dansgaard-Oeschger climate variability registered in the NGRIP ice core and support an atmospheric coupling mechanism of Northern Hemisphere climates.

During the first section of the "Meteor" cruise No. 2 a profile was run from the Azores to the south across the flanks of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge with a chain of seamounts. The profile extended between the Cruiser (living) and the Hyeres seamounts, which, according to our soundings, form a connected massif, and across the centre of the Grosse Meteor Bank (30°N, 28.5 °W). These seamounts rise from a depth of more than 4000 m up till close to the surface of the sea forming there a large almost flat plateau. In the case of the Grosse Meteor Bank, this plateau has a N-S extension of approx. 30 nautical miles and an E-W extension of approx. 20 nautical miles and reaches a height of 275 m in water depth. The gravity measurements yielded a density of the topographic masses of 2.6 g/cm**3 for the Grosse Meteor Bank. Magnitude and shape of the measured free-air anomaly are very well shown in a model computation with this density. The theoretical gravity effects of the seismically detected swell of cristalline rock and of the Moho depression (mountain root) are not indicated by the observational data. It can, therefore, be assumed that the latter two neutralize each other. It seems, accordingly, that there is no local isostatic compensation of the topographic masses. Hence, the density of 2.6 g/cm**3 obtained would be about the true density of rock. In connection with the mean velocity of P waves (Aric et al., 1968) obtained by seismic refraction methods it must be concluded that the material of the 1200-4000 m thick surface layer of the Grosse Meteor Bank consists of consolidated sediments. This finding is supported by the total intensity of the Earth's magnetic field over the Grosse Meteor Bank. On the assumption of a homogeneous magnetization in the direction of the present Earth's field, the computed anomaly of the massif deviates considerably from the measured anomaly while the magnetic field of the seismically detected crystalline body is capable of interpreting the observed data. Deviating from the prevailing interpretation of the seamounts' plateau as a volcanic cone with submarine abrasion, the Grosse Meteor Bank and the seamounts in the vicinity are assumed to be of continental origin. The questions whether these seamounts submerged later on or whether the sealevel has risen subsequently are, therefore, largely nonexistent.

Site 536 terminated in a shallow-water dolomite of unknown age. Paleomagnetic measurements combined with strontium isotope analyses suggest that the dolomite was deposited in the Middle Jurassic to Early Cretaceous time interval. However, the assumptions required to reach this determination make these results less than conclusive.

Intraspecific differences in the diets of many species of pinnipeds are to be expected in view of the great differences in morphology, life history and foraging behaviour between the sexes of many species. We examined the diet of the Antarctic fur seal population at Bouvetøya, Southern Ocean, to assess intersexual differences. This was made possible by the analysis of prey remains extracted from scats and regurgitations collected in areas used primarily by one or the other sex. The results indicate that both males and females feed primarily on Antarctic krill Euphausia superba with several species of fish and squid being taken, likely opportunistically given their prevalence. Significant differences were identified in the frequency of occurrence of otoliths in scats and the percentage numerical abundance of the major fish prey species in the diet. Adult males ate a smaller quantity of fish overall, but ate significantly more of the larger fish species. The greater diving capabilities of males and the fact that they are not limited in the extent of their foraging area by having to return regularly to feed dependant offspring may play a role in the differences found between the diets of males and females. Additionally, females might be more selective, favouring myctophids because they are richer in energy than krill. The absence of major differences in the diet between the sexes at this location is likely due to the high overall abundance of prey at Bouvetøya.

We present a suite of new high-resolution records (0-135 ka) representing pulses of aeolian, fluvial, and biogenic sedimentation along the Senegalese continental margin. A multiproxy approach based on rock magnetic, element, and color data was applied on three cores enclosing the present-day northern limit of the ITCZ. A strong episodic aeolian contribution driven by stronger winds and dry conditions and characterized by high hematite and goethite input was revealed north of 13°N. These millennial-scale dust fluxes are synchronous with North Atlantic Heinrich stadials. Fluvial clay input driven by the West African monsoon predominates at 12°N and varies at Dansgaard-Oeschger time scales while marine productivity is strongly enhanced during the African humid periods and marine isotope stage 5. From latitudinal signal variations, we deduce that the last glacial ITCZ summer position was located between core positions at 12°26' and 13°40'N. Furthermore, this work also shows that submillennial periods of aridity over northwest Africa occurred more frequently and farther south than previously thought.

Shatsky Rise, a medium-sized large igneous province in the west Central Pacific Ocean, has three main topographic highs that preserve a thick sedimentary record from Cretaceous through Cenozoic. During Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 198 to Shatsky Rise, a total of ~768 m of late Miocene-Holocene sediments was recovered from six sites. Sites 1207 and 1208 were drilled on the Northern and Central Highs, respectively, and yielded expanded late Miocene-Holocene sequences. Sites 1209, 1210, 1211, and 1212 were drilled on the Southern High and yielded shorter sequences of similar age. Clearly interpretable magnetic stratigraphies were obtained from all sites using the shipboard pass-through magnetometer. These results were augmented using discrete sample cubes (7 cm**3) collected shipboard and measured postcruise. Miocene age sediments are separated by a hiatus from Oligocene, Eocene, and Cretaceous age sediments beneath. An astrochronological age model was developed for the six sites based on cycles observed in reflectance data, measured shipboard. This age model is in good agreement with published astrochronological polarity chron ages in the 1 to 6 Ma interval.

The geometry of the Tonga Arc implies that it has rotated approximately 17° clockwise away from the Lau Ridge as the Lau Basin formed in between. Questions have arisen about the timing of the opening, whether the arc behaved rigidly, and whether the opening occurred instead from motion of the Lau Ridge, the remanent arc. We undertook to address these questions by taking paleomagnetic samples from sediment cores drilled on the Tonga Arc at Sites 840 and 841, orienting the samples in azimuth, and comparing the paleodeclinations to expected directions. Advanced hydraulic piston corer (APC) cores from Holes 840C and 841A were oriented during drilling with a tool based on a magnetic compass and attached to the core barrel. Samples from Hole 841B were drilled with a rotary core barrel (RCB) and therefore are azimuthally unoriented. They were oriented by identifying faults and dipping beds in the core and aligning them with the same features in the Formation MicroScanner (FMS) wireline logs, which were themselves oriented with a three-axis magnetometer in the FMS tool. The best results came from the APC cores, which yielded a mean pole at -69.0°S, 112.2°E for an age of 4 Ma. This pole implies a declination anomaly of 20.8° ± 12.6° (95% confidence limit), which appears to have occurred by tectonic rotation of the Tonga Arc. This value is almost exactly that expected from the geometry of the arc and implies that it did indeed rotate clockwise as a rigid body. The large uncertainty in azimuth results from core orientation errors, which have an average standard deviation of 18.6°. The youngest cores used to calculate the APC pole contain sediments deposited during Subchron 2A (2.48-3.40 Ma), and their declinations are indistinguishable from the others. This observation suggests that most of the rotation occurred after their deposition; this conclusion must be treated with caution, however, because of the large azimuthal orientation errors. Poles from late and early Miocene sediments of Hole 841B are more difficult to interpret. Samples from this hole are mostly normal in polarity, fail a reversal test, and yield poles that suggest that the normal-polarity directions may be a recent overprint. Late Miocene reversed-polarity samples may be unaffected by this overprint; if so, they imply a declination anomaly of 51.1° ± 11.5°. This observation may indicate that, for older sediments, Tonga forearc rotations are larger than expected.

At Site 582, DSDP Leg 87, turbidites about 560 m thick were recovered from the floor of the Nankai Trough. A turbidite bed is typically composed of three subdivisions: a lower graded sand unit, an upper massive silt unit, and an uppermost Chondrites burrowed silt unit. The turbidites intercalate with bluish gray hemipelagic mud which apparently accumulated below the calcite compensation depth. In order to investigate the nature and provenance of the turbidites, we studied the grain orientation, based on magnetic fabric measurements and thin-section grain counting, and grain size, using a photo-extinction settling tube and detrital modal analysis. The following results were obtained: (1) grain orientation analysis indicates that the turbidity current transport parallels the trench axis, predominantly from the northeast; (2) Nankai Trough turbidites generally decrease in grain size to the southwest; (3) turbidite sands include skeletal remains indicative of fresh-water and shallow-marine environments; and (4) turbidites contain abundant volcanic components, and their composition is analogous to the sediments of the Fuji River-Suruga Bay area. Considering other evidence, such as physiography and geometry of trench fill, we conclude that the turbidites of Site 582 as well as Site 583 were derived predominantly from the mouth of Fuji River and were transported through the Suruga Trough to the Nankai Trough, a distance of some 700 km. This turbidite transport system has tectonic implications: (1) the filling of the Nankai Trough is the direct consequence of the Izu collision in Pliocene- Pleistocene times; (2) the accretion of trench fill at the trench inner slope observed in the Nankai Trough is controlled by collision tectonics; and (3) each event of turbidite deposition may be related to a Tokai mega-earthquake.
