During ODP Leg 177, a Miocene to Pliocene calcareous nannofossil record was recovered at Sites 1088 and 1090. Site 1088, located at 41°8'S, shows a continuous middle-upper Miocene to Pliocene carbonate sequence that was deposited at relatively high sedimentation rates (Shipboard Scientific Party, 1999a, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.177.103.1999). Moreover, Site 1088 proved suitable for calcareous nannofossil analysis as a means to improve the biostratigraphy at this southern latitude. Site 1090 was drilled at 42°54'S; a tephra layer marks a significant disconformity at the Miocene/Pliocene boundary of this sequence (Shipboard Scientific Party, 1999b, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.177.105.1999). Although nannofossil assemblages are poorly preserved at this site (Shipboard Scientific Party, 1999b), they may help in determining the age of the disconformity and its paleoceanographic significance.

Magnetic iron minerals are widespread and indicative sediment constituents in estuarine, coastal and shelf systems. We combine environmental magnetic, sedimentological and numerical methods to identify magnetite-enriched placer-like zones in a complex coastal system and delineate their formation mechanisms. Magnetic susceptibility and remanence measurements on 245 surficial sediment samples collected in and around Tauranga Harbour, the largest barrier-enclosed tidal estuary of New Zealand, reveal several discrete enrichment zones controlled by local hydrodynamic conditions. Active magnetite enrichment takes place in tidal channels, which feed into two coast-parallel nearshore magnetite-enriched belts centered at water depths of 6-10 m and 10-20 m. A close correlation between magnetite content and magnetic grain size was found, where higher susceptibility values are associated within coarser magnetic crystal sizes. Two key mechanisms for magnetite enrichment are identified. First, tide-induced residual currents primarily enable magnetite enrichment within the estuarine channel network. A coast-parallel, fine sand magnetite enrichment belt in water depths of less than 10 m along the barrier island has a strong decrease in magnetite content away from the southern tidal inlet and is apparently related to active coast-parallel transport combined with mobilizing surf zone processes. A second, less pronounced, but more uniform magnetite enrichment belt at 10-20 m water depth is composed of non-mobile, medium-coarse-grained relict sands, which have been reworked during post-glacial sea level transgression. We demonstrate the potential of magnetic methods to reveal and differentiate coastal magnetite enrichment patterns and investigate their formative mechanisms.

Ice-wedge polygon (IWP) mires in the Arctic and Subarctic are extremely vulnerable to climatic and environmental change. We present the results of a multidisciplinary paleoenvironmental study on IWPs in the northern Yukon, Canada. High-resolution laboratory analyses were carried out on a permafrost core and the overlying seasonally thawed (active) layer, from a low-centered IWP located in a drained lake basin on Herschel Island. In relation to 14 Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dates spanning the last 5000 years, we report sedimentary data including grain size distribution and biogeochemical parameters (organic carbon, nitrogen, C/N ratio, d13C), stable water isotopes (d18O, dD), as well as fossil pollen, plant macrofossil and diatom assemblages. Three sediment units (SUs) correspond to the main stages of deposition (1) in a thermokarst lake (SU1: 4950 to 3950 cal yrs BP), (2) during transition from lacustrine to palustrine conditions after lake drainage (SU2: 3950 to 3120 cal yrs BP), and (3) in palustrine conditions in the IWP field that developed after drainage (SU3: 3120 cal yrs BP to AD 2012). The lacustrine phase (pre 3950 cal yrs BP) is characterized by planktonic-benthic and pioneer diatoms species indicating circumneutral waters, and very few plant macrofossils. The pollen record has captured a regional signal of relatively stable vegetation composition and climate for the lacustrine stage of the record until 3950 cal yrs BP. Palustrine conditions with benthic and acidophilic species characterize the peaty shallow-water environments of the low-centered IWP. The transition from lacustrine to palustrine conditions was accompanied by acidification and rapid revegetation of the lake bottom within about 100 years. Since the palustrine phase we consider the pollen record as a local vegetation proxy dominated by the plant communities growing in the IWP. Ice-wedge cracking in water-saturated sediments started immediately after lake drainage at about 3950 cal yrs BP and led to the formation of an IWP mire. Permafrost aggradation through downward closed-system freezing of the lake talik is indicated by the stable water isotope record. The originally submerged IWP center underwent gradual drying during the past 2000 years. This study highlights the sensitivity of permafrost landscapes to climate and environmental change throughout the Holocene.

In the Leg 87A holes, 45 ash layers were sampled in Recent to upper Pliocene strata. The main volcanogenic deposits came from single eruptions or subcontemporaneous eruptions of cognate volcanoes. Some of them are mixed ashes produced from multiple eruptions and accumulated in reworked sediments. The petrographic and geochemical patterns indicate rhyolitic and dacitic compositions; andesitic glasses are scarce. We infer a magmatic affinity with calc-alkaline sources and a possible origin from the volcanic arc of southwestern Japan. A few samples may originate from the alkaline volcanism of southwestern Japan or the area south of Korea and the Sea of Japan.

Strontium and neodymium isotopic data are reported for barite samples chemically separated from Late Miocene to Pliocene sediments from the eastern equatorial Pacific. At a site within a region of very high productivity close to the equator, 87Sr/86Sr ratios in the barite separates are indistinguishable from those of foraminifera and fish teeth from the same samples. However, at two sites north of the productivity maximum barite separates have slightly, but consistently lower (averaging 0.000062) ratios than the coexisting phases, although values still fall within the total range of published values for the contemporaneous seawater strontium isotope curve. We examine possible causes for this offset including recrystallization of the foraminifera, fish teeth or barite, the presence of non-barite contaminants, or incorporation of older, reworked deep-sea barite; the inclusion of a small amount of hydrothermal barite in the sediments seems most consistent with our data, although there are difficulties associated with adequate production and transportation of this phase. Barite is unlikely to replace calcite as a preferred tracer of seawater strontium isotopes in carbonate-rich sediments, but may prove a useful substitute in cases where calcite is rare or strongly affected by diagenesis. In contrast to the case for strontium, neodymium isotopic ratios in the barite separates are far from expected values for contemporary seawater, and appear to be dominated by an (unobserved) eolian component with high neodymium concentration and low 143Nd/144Nd. These results suggest that the true potential of barite as an indicator of paleocean neodymium isotopic ratios and REE patterns will be realized only when a more selective separation procedure is developed.

Twenty-three sediment intervals from top of Site 650 down to 510 m below seafloor have been studied. Their thicknesses vary between 0.25 m and about 40 m. The studied deposits are turbidites or parts of them except one which is interpreted as an ash-fall layer. The composition of the turbidites signalizes sources from shallow water/coastal areas as well as from deep water levels. Repeated mobilization and displacement seems to have been common. Volcaniclastic material is the dominant component of the whole studied part of Site 650 sedimentary sequence. Ashfall deposits as well as normal open marine sediments are rare.

Benthic foraminiferal assemblage compositions and sedimentary geochemical parameters were analyzed in two radiocarbon dated sediment cores from the upwelling area off NW Africa at 12°N, to reconstruct productivity changes during the last 31 kyr. High-latitude cold events and variations in low-latitude summer insolation influenced humidity, wind systems, and the position of the tropical rain belt over this time period. This in turn caused changes in intensity and seasonality of primary productivity off the southern Northwest African continental margin. High accumulation rates of benthic foraminifera, carbonate, and organic carbon during times of north Atlantic melt water events Heinrich 2 (25.4 to 24.3 kyr BP) and 1 (16.8 to 15.8 kyr BP) indicate high productivity. Dominance of infaunal benthic foraminiferal species and high numbers of deep infaunal specimens during that time indicate a strong and sustained supply of refractory organic matter reworked from the upper slope and shelf. A more southerly position of the tropical rainbelt and the Northeast trade wind belt during Heinrich 2 and 1 may have enhanced wind intensity and almost permanent upwelling, driving this scenario. A phytodetritus-related benthic fauna indicates seasonally pulsed input of labile organic matter but generally low year-round productivity during the Last Glacial Maximum (23 to 18 kyr BP). The tropical rainbelt is more expanded to the North than during Heinrich Events, and relatively weak NE trade winds resulted in seasonal and weak upwelling, thus lower productivity. High productivity characterized by a seasonally high input of labile organic matter, is indicated for times of orbital forced warming, such as the African Humid Period (9.8 to 7 kyr BP). An intensified African monsoon during boreal summer and the northernmost position of the tropical rainbelt within the last 31 kyr resulted in enhanced river discharge from the northward-extended drainage area (or river basin) initiating intense phytoplankton blooms. In the late Holocene (4 to 0 kyr BP) strong carbonate dissolution may have been caused by even more enhanced organic matter fluxes to the sea floor. Increasing aridity on the continent and stronger NE trade winds induced intensive, seasonal coastal upwelling.

A total of 145 samples were analyzed for palynology, and all were found to be productive. Residues are dominated by pollen, terrestrial spores, and land plant tissues. Marine palynomorphs occur in all samples, which allowed us to recognize five Miocene dinocyst assemblage zones. Dinocyst assemblages indicate cool-water conditions and suggest a neritic rather than fully oceanic environment, with not only North Atlantic and Norwegian Sea affinities, but also containing both notable protoperidiniacean and possible endemic elements. Dinocyst assemblages indicate an early Miocene age for the bottom of Hole 645E and an age no younger than early late Miocene (Sample 105-645E-24R, CC) near the top of the interval studied. These age assignments provide an estimated initiation of ice rafting in Baffin Bay at between 7.4 and 9.5 Ma. Increased terrigenous influx and apparent disappearance of certain dinocyst taxa occur in the middle to late Miocene and may be related to oceanographic changes or climatic deterioration. Spores and pollen indicate a climate that varied within a temperate regime during the early and middle to early late Miocene, followed by climatic deterioration. Four new dinocyst species are described: Batiacasphaera gemmata, Impletosphaeridium prolatum, Operculodinium vacuolatum, and Selenopemphix brevispinosa. The acritarch genus Cyclopsiella Drugg and Loeblich is emended, and two new combinations have been created: Cyclopsiella granosa (Matsuoka) and Cyclopsiella? laevigata (Chateauneuf). Cyclopsiella granosa (Matsuoka) n. comb. is considered a subjective junior synonym of Cyclopsiella granulata He and Li. Ascostomocystis granulatus Chateauneuf has been provisionally allocated to Cyclopsiella and renamed Cyclopsiella? chateauneufii. Two new acritarch species are described: Cyclopsiella spiculosa and Cymatiosphaera! baffinensis.

The impact of late glacial changes on the sedimentary record was investigated in two long vibracores, collected from the shelf edge off Mauritania, northwest Africa. Lithology and radiocarbon dates indicate that the sedimentary sequences were mainly controlled by sea-level changes on the shelf. The upper Pleistocene sequence is characterized by deposition in coastal environments, while the Holocene sequence represents deposition in shelf environments. During low sea level, much sediment was supplied to the present outer shelf, and the data imply an average accumulation rate of up to 43.0 cm/1000 yrs during the late Pleistocene, which is substantially higher than the Holocene rate. Shelf sediments were continuously reworked and redistributed on a regional scale during falling and rising sea level. The presence of reworked material results in radiocarbon ages which are too old. The mollusc. Venus striatula, which presently is found north of, but not along, the Mauritanian coast, occurs in the upper Pleistocene sequence, suggesting cooler water conditions in the shelf during late glacial times. This species probably migrated to the south during late glacial times, following the southward extension of the cold Canary Current. Radiocarbon dates of the shells broadly coincide with a lowstand of sea level over this part of the continental shelf.

We drilled 13 holes on Ocean Drilling Program Leg 115 in the Indian Ocean and recovered Paleogene sediments that consisted primarily of pelagic components. Planktonic foraminifer assemblages displayed high diversity throughout the Paleogene from the late Paleocene to the Oligocene/Miocene boundary and consist of predominantly warm-water species. Faunas of middle Eocene age are remarkably well represented. Biostratigraphic assignment was, however, very difficult because of the turbiditic character of most of the Paleogene sediments. Reworking is a constant feature of the middle Eocene through early Oligocene planktonic faunas, with reworked faunas frequently overwhelming the younger ones. Preservation within turbidites ranges from excellent to very poor to total destruction of planktonic foraminifers. A major dissolution episode is recorded in the interval that spans most of the late Eocene through the early Oligocene, especially at the deeper sites where the source area was probably well below the lysocline. Redeposition decreases markedly by the mid-Oligocene, but it is only by late Oligocene Zone P22 that normal sedimentation resumes and/or redeposition decreases even at the most affected sites (such as Hole 709C). Comparison with other sites drilled previously in the Indian Ocean reveals that mixed assemblages were already known for sediments from the Mascarene Plateau-Seychelles Bank and surrounding basins during that time span. Because of the disturbances that characterize Paleogene deposits, hiatuses are difficult to detect; nevertheless, a hiatus of less local importance, spanning Subzone P21b, was detected in three holes at different water depths.

Positions of all cores recovered during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 112 off Peru are shown in the standard calcareous nannoplankton zonation. Stratigraphic and regional occurrences and preservation of calcareous nannoplankton are discussed for all sites, and fossil lists are presented for selected samples. Late Miocene to Holocene nannoplankton assemblages in the upwelling systems off Peru and scattered blooms, especially of Gephyrocapsa species and Helicosphaera carteri, are described. Scyphosphaera assemblages found in late Miocene Zone NN9 {Discoaster hamatus Zone) at Site 684 are compared with similar assemblages from Gabon on the west coast of Africa. Remarkable subsidence is indicated by early and middle Eocene nearshore and shallow-water nannoplankton assemblages for Sites 682, 683, and 688. Besides several local hiatuses, major regional hiatuses were noted at Site 682 (upper Eocene, uppermost middle Eocene, and part of the lower and middle Oligocene missing), Site 683 (uppermost middle Eocene to lower part of the middle Miocene missing), and Site 688 (part of the middle Eocene, uppermost middle Eocene to upper Oligocene, and parts of the lower and middle Miocene missing).

A quantative study was made of silicoflagellates recovered from Sites 642 (lower Miocene-upper Pliocene), 643 (lower Miocene-upper Miocene), and 644 (upper Pliocene-Quaternary) on the Voring Plateau. Although disconformities are present in these sequences, they represent a much more complete record of the Neogene than was recovered previously in the Norwegian Sea by DSDP Leg 38. Silicoflagellates are rare or absent for glacial sequences younger than 2.65 Ma, and generally sparse and poorly preserved in the lower upper Pliocene and upper Miocene. Lower and middle Miocene assemblages are diverse and generally well preserved. Temporal changes in the silicoflagellate assemblage are indicative of major paleoceanographic changes in the Norwegian Sea. A regional zonation for the Neogene of the Norwegian Sea is proposed, consisting of eleven zones: Naviculopsis lata Zone, N. quadrata Zone (emended), N. ponticula Zone (emended), Distephanus speculum hemisphaericus Zone (new), Caryocha ernestinae Zone (new), Bachmannocena circulus var. apiculata/Caryocha Zone (new), Distephanus crux scutulatus Zone (new), Bachmannocena diodon nodosa Zone (new), Distephanus boliviensis Zone (new), Ds. jimlingii Zone (elevated from subzonal to zonal status) with Subzones a and b (new), and Ds. speculum Zone (new). The ranges and abundances of over 100 species and morphotypes are tabulated.

Planktonic foraminiferal and nannoplankton stratigraphy of the Pliocene-Quatemary Sediments of the northern half of the Atlantic Ocean from the equator up to the Rockall Plateau and the Norwegian Sea, is considered. Lowlatitude zonations were used for the subdivision of the Pliocene and Quaternary Sediments of different climatic belts, and certain subglobal zonal units were recognized. Variations in the degree of resolution of the zonation in different latitudes were revealed; the resolution of zonal scales based on calcareous plankton diminishes northwards. Changes of taxonomic composition of the zonal foraminifer and nannoplankton assemblages within various latitudinal belts of the Atlantic were analyzed taking into consideration the influence of climatic factors and of local bionomic conditions. Correlation with the magnetostratigraphic time-scale permitted the establishment of the most reliable appearance and disappearance datums (datum planes) of planktonic foraminifer and nannoplankton species. Paleontologic plates demonstrate some guide forms of two groups of calcareous plankton, and a short description of the taxa is given in the text. Major stratigraphic problems of Pliocene and Quaternary marine deposits are discussed. The monograph can be used in different geological investigations by specialists in geology, paleontology, and oceanology.

Sediments from holes drilled at 11 sites in the northern Gulf of Mexico during Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 96 were analyzed for calcareous nannofossil content. All sediments recovered are Holocene and late Pleistocene in age and are within the Emiliania huxleyi Zone. The datum level represented by the lowest stratigraphic occurrence of dominant E. huxleyi occurs at two sites (Sites 615 and 619) and can be dated at approximately 84,000 yr. ago at Site 619. Reworked Cretaceous nannofossils are generally common or abundant and dominate the floral assemblages of the late Wisconsin glacial sediments. When present, indigenous late Quaternary species are rare or few in abundance. Slight increases in the contemporaneous Quaternary component of the floral assemblages can be documented by the use of a calculated in s/fu/reworked ratio. This ratio, based on the relative abundances of the indigenous Quaternary taxa and reworked taxa, shows potential both for local correlations between drill sites and for correlation with glacio-eustatic fluctuations during the late Pleistocene.
