The late Quaternary sequence off eastern South Island, New Zealand, consists of ~100 m of alternating bluish gray pelagic oozes and greenish gray hemipelagic oozes that extend uninterruptedly back to the Brunhes/Matuyama boundary (0.73 m.y.). A very high resolution (~2400 yr.) record of sediment texture, calcium carbonate content, and planktonic and benthic foraminiferal oxygen and carbon isotope composition demonstrates an in-phase cyclical fluctuation between the sedimentary parameters that closely correspond to the pelagic-hemipelagic sedimentation cycles and the isotope composition. Pelagic oozes, formed during interglacial periods of high eustatic sea level, are characterized by calcareous microfossils, relative enrichment in sand and clay sizes, high carbonate contents, reduced delta18O values, and increased delta13C values. Hemipelagic oozes, associated with glacial episodes and lowered eustatic sea level, include common terrigenous material and siliceous microfossils, are enriched in silt sizes, have low carbonate contents, high delta18O values, and low delta13C values. The history of alpine glaciations and associated erosion of the South Island of New Zealand, as expressed by the appearance of hemipelagic oozes, can be correlated directly with the major fluctuations of Northern Hemisphere ice sheets as expressed by the influence of eustatic sea-level changes on the oxygen isotope composition of both planktonic and benthic foraminifers. This high-accumulation-rate record contains conspicuous intervals of highfrequency, high-amplitude isotope variability including the presence of multiple glacial/interglacial intervals within single isotope stages, and offers one of the best sections cored to date for detailed study of the evolution and history of climate change over the last 0.75 m.y.

The isotopic (dD, d18O, d13C, and 87Sr/86Sr) and geochemical characteristics of hydrothermal solutions from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the material of brucite-carbonate chimneys at the Lost City hydrothermal field at 30°N, MAR, were examined to assay the role of the major factors controlling the genesis of the fluid and hydrothermal chimneys of the Lost City field. The values of dD and d18O in fluid samples indicates that solutions at the Lost City field were produced during the serpentinization of basement ultramafic rocks at temperatures higher than 200°C and at relatively low fluid/rock ratios (<1). The active role of serpentinization processes in the genesis of the Lost City fluid also follows from the results of the electron-microscopic studying of the material of hydrothermal chimneys at this field. The isotopic (d18O, d13C, and 87Sr/86Sr) and geochemical (Sr/Ca and REE) signatures indicate that, before its submarine discharging at the Lost City field, the fluid filtered through already cold altered outer zones of the Atlantis Massif and cooled via conductive heat loss. During this stage, the fluid could partly dissolve previously deposited carbonates in veins cutting serpentinite at the upper levels of the Atlantis Massif and the carbonate cement of sedimentary breccias underlying the hydrothermal chimneys. Because of this, the age of modern hydrothermal activity at the Lost City field can be much younger than 25 ka.

A detailed oxygen and carbon isotope study of the upper Maestrichtian-lower Paleocene section of Hole 516F from the Rio Grande Rise reveals that large isotopic anomalies are clearly associated with the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary. Across the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary, the total carbonate content reaches a maximum exceeding 80% before rapidly decreasing in covariance with the carbon isotope record. This strong covariance between d13C and percent CaCO3 suggests either a significant reduction in primary productivity or a rapid shoaling of the calcium carbonate compensation depth. Importantly, the d13C record 2 Ma after the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary remained depleted in 13C by at least 0.5 per mil compared to the late Maestrichtian.

During drilling in the Gulf of California, diagenetic carbonate rocks were recovered at 7 out of 8 sites. These are primarily dolomites which record 13C isotopic evidence of the incorporation of carbon derived from the decomposition of organic matter. In Hole 479, drilled to a sub-bottom depth of 440 meters on the Guaymas Slope, under a fertile upwelling belt, we recognized an excellent example of deep sea dolomitization in progress. This Quaternary section of organic-carbon- rich, low-carbonate, hemipelagic diatomaceous oozes contains numerous fine-grained, decimeter-thin, episodic beds of dolomite, which show sedimentologic, geochemical, and isotopic evidence of accretion by precipitation below 40 meters sub-bottom in zones of high alkalinity and low sulfate. The beds preserve original sedimentary structures. Carbon-13 varies from +3 to +14 per mil, indicating biogenic CO2 reservoirs related to active methanogenesis. In single beds, 18O values range outwardly from +5 to -7 per mil, reflecting increasing temperature with progressive accretion of dolomite with depth; the values parallel progressive trends in lithification, texture, mineralogy, and fossil preservation. We estimate slow accretion rates on the order of 0.1-0.7 mm/10**3 yr. with burial. Dolomitization does not proceed merely at the expense of nearby nannofossils. Ca and Mg ions must be derived from interstitial waters. The episodic appearance of beds in the sequence seems partly a reflection of latent climate signals. This process of deep sea dolomitization carries implications for hydrocarbon migration, as well as an interpretation of the presence of dolomite in other modern and ancient pelagic to hemipelagic sediment sequences.

The barite and CaCO3 content (in weight percent) of marine sediments can be used to determine spatial and temporal changes in export production (organic and carbonate carbon flux) and/or CaCO3 preservation (inorganic carbon burial). Here we report barite and CaCO3 content in Eocene/Oligocene (E/O) boundary sediments from locations drilled on Shatsky Rise during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 198. Records of these indexes may be used along with other data to determine how the major E/O boundary climatic transition (initiation of Antarctic glaciation and resultant ocean-climate system changes) affected marine export production/preservation at Shatsky Rise. Such data are necessary to elucidate the timing and phasing of changes in the carbon cycle relative to fluctuations in oceanographic conditions across this climatically important interval.
