Fossil Mn nodules of Cretaceous age from western Timor exhibit chemical, structural and radioisotope compositions consistent with their being of deep-sea origin. These nodules show characteristics similar to nodules now found at depths of 3,500-5,000 m in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Slight differences in the fine structure and chemistry of these nodules and modern deep-sea nodules are attributed to diagenetic alteration after uplift of enclosing sediments.

Although it is well known that the Paleocene/Eocene thermal maximum (PETM) coincided with a major benthic foraminiferal extinction event, the detailed pattern of the faunal turnover has not yet been clarified. Our high-resolution benthic foraminiferal and carbon isotope analyses at the low latitude Pacific Ocean Shatsky Rise have revealed the following record of major faunal transitions: (1) An initial turnover which involved the benthic foraminiferal extinction event (BFE). The BFE, marked by a sharp transition from Pre-extinction fauna to Disaster fauna represented by small-sized Bolivina gracilis, expresses the onset of the PETM and the abrupt extinction of about 30% of taxa. This faunal transition lasted about 45-74 kyr after the initiation of the PETM and was followed by: (2) the appearance of Opportunistic fauna represented by Quadrimorphina profunda, which existed for about 74-91 kyr after the initiation of the PETM. These two faunas, which appeared after the extinction event, are characterized by low diversity and dwarfism, possibly due to lowered oxygen condition and decreased surface productivity. The second pronounced turnover involved the gradual recovery from Opportunistic Fauna to the establishment of Recovery fauna, which coincided with the recovery about 83-91 kyr after its initiation.

Sediments associated with freshwater ferromanganese concretions in Lake Charlotte, Nova Scotia, contained microscopic precipitates of manganese and iron. These precipitates were dispersed throughout the sediment and were as rich in nickel, cobalt, and copper as deep sea concretions. In addition, the development of the precipitates appeared to be associated with the microbial oxidation of manganese. Results from the deployment of poisoned and unpoisoned dialysis probes or peepers demonstrated that microbial manganese oxidation and nickel binding were closely associated, causing a fivefold enhancement of abiotic processes such as adsorption.

Fluorine concentrations were determined ionometrically with an error of 0.02% in iron-manganese materials of the ocean. They were: 0.02-0.04% in ocean iron-manganese nodules, with the exception of two specimens (0.08% and 0.20% F); up to 0.02% in iron-manganese nodules of seas; 0.02-1.17% in ore crusts from ocean seamounts; and 0.02% in ore sediments of the Red Sea. Elevated fluorine content of ore crusts is associated with presence of calcium phosphate inclusions in them. Fluorine is not accumulated during iron-manganese nodule mineralization. Its average concentration in the nodules is half that in host deep-sea sediments.

Phosphorus content in the surface layer of bottom sediments varies from 0.07% to 0.73%. Clayey radiolarian and radiolarian clayey oozes contain 0.12% P, miopelagic clays 0.21% P, and sediments with high iron and manganese concentrations 0.46% P (average contents). Phosphorus content of iron-manganese nodules varies from 0.14% to 0.39%, average 0.19%. Correlation between phosphorus contents in nodules and surrounding sediments is indicated indirectly by P/Fe ratio. Phosphorus is non-uniformly distributed in some nodules and sometimes correlates with iron. Accumulation of phosphorus in iron-manganese nodules is governed by a degree of manganese predominance in ore components.
