The main stages of the sedimentary cycle of uranium in modern marine basins are under consideration in the book. Annually about 18 thousand tons of dissolved and suspended uranium enters the ocean with river runoff. Depending on a type of a marine basin uranium accumulated either in sediments of deep-sea basins, or in sediments of continental shelves and slopes. In the surface layer of marine sediments hydrogenic uranium is predominantly bound with organic matter, and in ocean sediments also with iron, manganese and phosphorus. In diagenetic processes there occurs partial redistribution of uranium in sediments, as well as its concentration in iron-manganese, phosphate and carbonate nodules and biogenic phosphate detritus. Concentration of uranium in marine sediments of various types depending on their composition, as well as on forms of its entering, degree of differentiation and of sedimentation rates, on hydrochemical regime and water circulation, and on intensity of diagenetic processes.

The paper presents data on authigenic carbonate distribution in Holocene - Upper Pleistocene deposits of the Okhotsk, Japan, East China, Philippine and South China Seas. Description of carbonate samples, their chemical and isotope compositions are given. Chemical analysis of the samples indicates that almost all authigenic carbonates are composed of calcite or magnesian calcite; and only in one case, of siderite. Oxygen isotopic composition (d18O) ranges from +37.7 to +26.1 per mil (SMOW); it is, probably, connected with different temperatures of carbonate formation. A distinct geographic regularity is traced. Decrease in d18O values is observed from the cold Okhotsk Sea to the warm South China Sea. A very wide range of carbon isotopic composition (d13C from -42 to +3.8 per mil) indicates different sources of carbonic acid required for formation of these carbonates. As a basis for carbon isotopic composition we can distinguish three sources of carbonic acid in the studied sediments: microbiological methane oxidation, organic matter destruction during sediment diagenesis, and dissolved organogenic limestone. Thus, formation of authigenic carbonates in sediments from the marginal seas of the Northwest Pacific results from: 1) sediment diagenesis, 2) methane oxidation in zones of gas anomalies, 3) their precipitation from the supersaturated by carbonates sea shoal waters of tropical sea lagoons.

In near-shore Pacific bottom sediments to the east of Japan unusually high content of free H2S ocurs. H2S resulting from bacterial reduction of sulfates from interstitial waters has a number of derivatives; pyrite dominates among them. Contents of other derivatives of H2S: sulfide sulfur and organic sulfur do not exceed 0,01%, content of organic sulfur does not exceed 0.1%. Due to reduction content of sulfates can reduce to 0,03% S. Capacity of the process of sulfate reduction, estimated by sum of all reduced forms of S - derivatives of H2S, is a function of organic matter content in sediments. Ability of bottom sediments to accumulate free H2S depends on content of reactive forms of Fe. Spatial distribution of reduced forms of S in the studied sediments is considered.

In fault zones of the East Indian Ridge and adjacent areas of ocean floor almost monomineral sepiolite- and palygorskite clays have been found. They have been studied by a complex of optical and physical methods. Formation of authigenic sepiolites and palygorskite had occurred under influence of Mg- and Si-rich hydrothermal solutions by metasomatic replacement of montmorillonite clays, or by precipitation from saturated solutions in cracks of various rocks.

A core of foraminiferal-coccolithic oozes filling a valley of the transform fault located at 29°40'S on the South Atlantic Ridge contains layers composed of angular fragments of igneous and metamorphic rocks. They include many serpentinites deriving from serpentinized ultrabasic rocks, probably exposed on the lower section of the southern slope of the fault valley. A mineral and chemical description of these serpentinites is given.

Results of a study of contents and accumulation rates of Fe, Mn, and some trace elements in Upper Quaternary sediments of the Deryugin Basin are presented. Maps of average contents and accumulation rates of excessive Fe, Mn, Zn, Ba, Ni, Pb, Cu, and Mo in sediments of the first oxygen isotope stage (OIS) have been plotted. Anomalous contents and accumulation rates are confined to peripheral zones of the Deryugin sedimentary basin and large fracture zones. Different mechanisms of influence of fluid-dynamic processes on rate of hydrogenic and biogenic accumulation of ore elements are assumed.

Ferromanganese concretions spread out on the bottom of the shallow northwest part of the Black Sea are mainly represented by Fe and Mn nodules on shells and substituted worm tubes. Element composition of these formations was measured by methods of chemical, atomic absorbtion, neutron activation, and ICP-MS analyses. It was established that Fe and Mn contents and Mn/Fe ratio in the concretions varied considerably and which controlled occurrence of several associated metals and minor elements; some of them have not been studied in Black Sea concretions before.

New data on bottom sediments and igneous rocks of the Philippine Trench are under consideration. They show differences in geological structures of the island slope and the ocean slope of the trench. The island slope is comparable to the accretionary prism formations on the Philippines; there processes of gravitational re-deposition of sediments occur. The ocean slope is an edge of the Philippine Plate sinking into the trough, where basalts of the oceanic crust are exposed.

Composition of clay minerals in the <0.001 mm size fraction from the uppermost layer of bottom sediments in the northern Amur Bay was determined by X-ray powder diffraction analysis, and enrichment of 33 elements in the <0.001 mm and <0.01 mm size fractions of surface sediments from a number of sites at the marginal filter of the Razdol'naya River were studied by ICP-MS. Fe, U, and chalcophile elements occur in the highest concentrations in sediments from all sampling sites within the filter. The bottom sediments are not enriched in trace, alkali, and alkaline earth elements. Maximum concentrations of chemical elements were found in deposits from the brackish part of the marginal filter, perhaps, because of formation of Fe and Mn (Al) hydroxides. Bottom sediments at the boundary between the brackish and marine parts of the filter contain the lowest concentrations of the examined elements.

Dependence of magnetic susceptibility of bottom sediments from the Caspian Sea on composition of magnetoactive minerals contained in the heavy subfraction of fine-grained sand (0.125-0.100 mm grain size fraction) was established. Changes in the curve shape and magnetic susceptibility values reflect a pulsating pattern of input of different (in magnetic properties) magmatic and metamorphic clastic minerals into sediments, as well as different intensities of formation of authigenic magnetoactive iron sulfides under conditions of multiple alternation of transgressive and regressive phases in marine basins. Values of magnetic susceptibility and shapes of magnetic susceptibility curves for studied sedimentary sequences show that sediments in the South and Middle Caspian Basins are characterized by different specific features.

As is less toxic than Hg, Cd, Pb, Se, Zn, and Cu. The As clarke for clays and shales is 10 ppm. Our samples of bottom sediments from Kurshskii Bay were determined to contain from 15 to 26 ppm As and up to 34 ppm As in the vicinity of the Neman River mouth. Elevated As concentrations (50-114 ppm) were detected in four columns of subsurface bottom sediments (at depths of 10-65 cm) from the Vistula Lagoon. Elevated As concentrations (50-180 ppm) were also found in a few surface samples of sand from the Gdansk Deep near oil platform D-6. These sediments are either partly contaminated with anthropogenic As or contain Fe sulfides and glauconite, which can concentrate As and contain its elevated concentrations. The As concentration in columns of bottom sediments from the Gulf of Finland were at the natural background level (throughout the columns) typical of the area (9-34 ppm). We repeatedly detected very high As concentrations (up to 227 ppm As) in politic ooze from Bornholm Deep, in the vicinity of the sunken vessel with chemical weapons. The sources of elevated As concentrations in the Baltic Sea are the following: (1) chemical weapon (CW) material buried in the floor of the Baltic Sea; (2) As-bearing pesticides, agricultural mineral fertilizers, and burned coal and other fuels; (3) kerogen-bearing Ordovician rocks exposed on the bottom; and (4) As-rich Fe sulfides brought to the area together with construction sand and gravel. This mixture was used in paper production and for the construction of hydraulic engineering facilities in the Vistula Lagoon in the early 20th century and later caused the so-called lagoon disease.

The first series of Soviet standard reference samples of composition of ore materials and ocean pelagic sediments has been created. It includes iron-manganese nodules (SDO-4, SDO-5 and SDO-6), ore crusts (SDO-7) diatomaceous ooze (SDO-8), and deep-sea red clays (SDO-9). The standards are intended to serve as a metrologic basis for physical, physicochemical and chemical analyses of iron-manganese minerals and ocean sediments. The standards are provided with certified analyses of rock-forming components and certain trace elements. Certified characteristics are based on statistical analysis of data obtained from an inter-laboratory experiment involving analysis of the standard reference samples by a variety of methods.
