High-resolution, well-dated calcareous dinoflagellate cyst and organic carbon records from a 58 kyr sediment core (M35003-4) located southeast of the island of Grenada show that rapid and pronounced changes in cyst association and accumulation and organic carbon deposition occurred, controlled by (1) a significant southward shift in the position of the North Equatorial Current during the last glacial period and the Younger Dryas cold interval and (2) rapid changes in local productivity in marine isotopic stage 3 that are associated with variations in Orinoco River nutrient discharge and coastal upwelling strength. Prominent cyst accumulation peaks representing extremely oligotrophic and stratified thermocline conditions mimic the Greenland ice core and northern Atlantic Dansgaard/Oeschger stadials and Heinrich events. We provide new evidence for a coupled tropical/high-latitude Atlantic climate system during the last glacial period and suggest that changes in the zonality of the low-latitude winds may play an important role in modulating rapid interhemispheric climate variability.

On the eastern flank of the Juan de Fuca Ridge, reaction between upwelling basement fluid and sediment alters hydrothermal fluxes of Ca, SiO2(aq), SO4, PO4, NH4, and alkalinity. We used the Global Implicit Multicomponent Reactive Transport (GIMRT) code to model the processes occurring in the sediment column (diagenesis, sediment burial, fluid advection, and multicomponent diffusion) and to estimate net seafloor fluxes of solutes. Within the sediment section, the reactions controlling the concentrations of the solutes listed above are organic matter degradation via SO4 reduction, dissolution of amorphous silica, reductive dissolution of amorphous Fe(III)-(hydr)oxide, and precipitation of calcite, carbonate fluorapatite, and amorphous Fe(II)-sulfide. Rates of specific discharge estimated from pore-water Mg profiles are 2 to 3 mm/yr. At this site the basement hydrothermal system is a source of NH4, SiO2(aq), and Ca, and a sink of SO4, PO4, and alkalinity. Reaction within the sediment column increases the hydrothermal sources of NH4 and SiO2(aq), increases the hydrothermal sinks of SO4 and PO4, and decreases the hydrothermal source of Ca. Reaction within the sediment column has a spatially variable effect on the hydrothermal flux of alkalinity. Because the model we used was capable of simulating the observed pore-water chemistry by using mechanistic descriptions of the biogeochemical processes occurring in the sediment column, it could be used to examine the physical controls on hydrothermal fluxes of solutes in this setting. Two series of simulations in which we varied fluid flow rate (1 to 100 mm/yr) and sediment thickness (10 to 100 m) predict that given the reactions modeled in this study, the sediment section will contribute most significantly to fluxes of SO4 and NH4 at slow flow rates and intermediate sediment thickness and to fluxes of SiO2(aq) at slow flow rates and large sediment thickness. Reaction within the sediment section could approximately double the hydrothermal sink of PO4 over a range of flow rates and sediment thickness, and could slightly decrease (by of the hydrothermal source of Ca.

Depending on the temperature and the extent of diagenetic alteration of fluid chemistry, fluid flow at convergent margins may transfer important quantities of heat and mass between the crust and seawater, thereby influencing global mass, isotopic and heat budgets. In the North Aoba Basin, an intra-arc basin located at the New Hebrides Island Arc, alteration of volcanic ash to clay minerals and zeolites forms a CaCl2 brine, perhaps in less than 1 to 3 m.y. The brine results from an exchange of Ca for Na, K, and Mg, and an increase in Cl concentrations to a maximum of 1241 mM. The Cl increase is partly due to the transfer of H2O from the pore fluid into authigenic minerals, but water mass balances, d18O-Cl correlations, and Br/Cl ratios suggest that there is a source of Cl in the sediments. Concentration profiles indicate that Li is transferred from the fluid to solid phase at depths <300 meters below seafloor (mbsf), but at greater depths it is transferred from the solid to fluid phase, at temperatures possibly as low as 25°C. In the accretionary wedge extensive fluid flow appears to be confined to highly faulted regions. Although Cl concentrations less than seawater value are common at convergent margins, the New Hebrides margin contains little low-Cl fluid. Br/Cl ratios suggest the low-Cl fluid is from dilution, and d18O values indicate the water may be derived from mineral dehydration and mixing with meteoric water. The New Hebrides margin exhibits few surface manifestations of venting (e.g., sulfide-oxidizing benthic biological communities, carbonate crusts, mud volcanoes) and thus fluid fluxes may be smaller than at many other margins.

The manganese nodules occur in greater or less quantity all over the ocean-bed, and most abundantly in the Pacific. They occur in all sizes, from minute grains to masses of a pound weight, and even greater, and form nodular concretions of concentric shells, round a nucleus, which is very frequently a piece of pumice or a shark's tooth. Their outside has a peculiar and very characteristic mammillated surface, which enables them to be identified at a glance. When freshly brought up they are very soft, being easily scraped to powder with a knife. They gradually get harder on exposure to the air. The powder, heated in a closed tube, gives out water which re-acts alkaline, and has an empyreumatic odour. Heated with strong hydrochloric acid, it liberates abundance of chlorine, and the residue which remains is white, consisting of silica, clay, and sand, the sand being the same as is found in the bottom mud from the same locality. Their composition varies greatly, different nodules containing different quantities of mechanically admixed mud, and the number of different elements found in them is very large. Copper, iron, cobalt, nickel, manganese, alumina, lime, magnesia, silica, and phosphoric acid have been detected in a large number; but I have not as yet been able to make a complete analysis of any of them. I have, however, made a few determinations of the most important component substances. For this purpose the outside and densest layers of the nodules were selected, and portions of them were pulverised and dried for ten or twelve hours at 140° C. The amount of chlorine liberated on treatment with hydrochloric acid was determined by Bunsen's method, and the iron was determined by titration with stannous chloride. The samples analysed were from four different localities.

Results of a study of contents and accumulation rates of Fe, Mn, and some trace elements in Upper Quaternary sediments of the Deryugin Basin are presented. Maps of average contents and accumulation rates of excessive Fe, Mn, Zn, Ba, Ni, Pb, Cu, and Mo in sediments of the first oxygen isotope stage (OIS) have been plotted. Anomalous contents and accumulation rates are confined to peripheral zones of the Deryugin sedimentary basin and large fracture zones. Different mechanisms of influence of fluid-dynamic processes on rate of hydrogenic and biogenic accumulation of ore elements are assumed.

Rock samples from Hole 735B, Southwest Indian Ridge, were examined to determine the principal vein-related types of alteration that occurred, the nature of fluids that were present, and the temperatures and pressures of these fluids. Samples studied included veined metagabbro, veined mylonitic metagabbro, felsic trondhjemite, and late-stage leucocratic diopside-bearing veins. The methods used were standard petrographic analysis, mineral chemical analysis by electron microprobe, fluid inclusion petrography and analysis by heating/freezing techniques and laser Raman microspectroscopy, and oxygen isotopic analyses of mineral separates. Alteration in lithologic Units I and II (above the level of Core 118-735B-3OR; approximately 140 meters below the seafloor) is dominated by hydration by seawater-derived fluids at high temperature, up to about 700°C, and low water/rock ratio, during and immediately after pervasive ductile deformation. Below Core 118-735B-30R, pervasive deformation is less common, and brittle veining and brecciation are the major alteration styles. Leucocratic centimeter-scale veins, often containing diopside and plagioclase, were produced by interaction of hot (about 500°C) seawater-derived fluid and gabbro. The water/rock ratio was locally high at the veins and breccia zones, but the integrated water/rock ratio for the lower part of the hole is probably low. Accessory hydrous magmatic or deuteric phases formed from magmatic volatiles in some gabbro and in trondhjemite. Most subsequent alteration was affected by fluids that were seawater-derived, based on isotopic and chemical analyses of minerals and analyses of fluid inclusions. Many early-generation fluid inclusions, associated with high-temperature veining, contain appreciable methane as well as saline water. The source of methane is unclear, but it may have formed as seawater was reduced during low water/rock interaction with ultramafic upper mantle or ultramafic and mafic layer 3. Temperatures of alteration were calculated on the basis of coexisting mineral chemistry and isotopic values. Hydrothermal metamorphism commenced at about 720°C and continued to about 550°C. Leucocratic veining took place at about 500°C. Alteration within brecciated horizons was also at about 500° to less than 400°C, and the trondhjemite was altered at about 550° to below 490°C. Pressures calculated from a diopside-bearing vein, based on a combination of fluid inclusion and isotopic analysis, were 90 to 100 MPa. This pressure places the sample, from Core 118-735B-70R in Unit V, at about 2 km below the seafloor.

One particularly complex phenomenon is the episodic, tidally driven variation of navigable depth level as a result of fluid mud settlement. This paper presents results from dynamic cone penetration testing with pore pressure measurement (CPTU) as a nonacoustical, direct device to support surveying and management of these areas. The new technique is modular and uses a disk configuration for fluid mud detection. Both disk resistance and pore pressure measurements accurately identify suspended matter concentrations of 90 g/L or more, and the transition from fluid mud to consolidating mud once concentrations exceed 150 g/L. Hence, the procedure attests the potential for rapid, reliable assessment of a fluid mud layer and concurrent characterization of the underlying consolidated sediment by monitoring the pore pressure and strength changes during penetration.

Boron contents and boron, carbon and oxygen stable isotopes were determined for authigenic carbonates recovered from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 146, Oregon margin. Carbonate precipitates are the most widespread authigenic phase in the shallow accretionary wedge and carry chemical information about long-term variations in pore fluid origin and flow paths in the Cascadia subduction zone. Drilling the first ridge (toe area including the frontal thrust) and the second ridge (or Hydrate Ridge) of the prism demonstrated different fluid regimes, with higher B contents in the authigenic precipitates at the toe. The delta11B of 18 authigenic precipitates analysed ranges from 13.9 per mil to as high as 39.8 per mil, extending the upper range of previously reported carbonate delta11B values considerably. When related to the delta11B ratio of their parent solutions, these data are characteristic of fluid-related processes in accretionary prisms. Together with delta13C and delta18O, delta11B ratios of the carbonate concretions, nodules and crusts allow one to distinguish between precipitation influenced by (i) seawater, (ii) fluid reservoirs at different depth levels within the accretionary prism and (iii) cage water from dissociated gas hydrates, the latter possibly indicating a fluctuation of the bottom simulating reflector during most recent Earth's history. From this first systematic boron study on authigenic precipitates from an accretionary prism it is suggested that B contents of such carbonate crusts and concretions exceed those reported for other marine carbonates. Given the abundance of such precipitates at convergent margins, they represent a significant B sink in geochemical cycling. Isotopic compositions of the parent fluids to the carbonates mirror B chemistry of modern pore waters from convergent margins. The precipitates carry information of different subduction-related fluid processes over a certain period of time, and hence are a crucial tracer in the investigation of palaeo-fluid flow.

A joint research expedition between the French IFREMER and the German MARUM was conducted in 2011 using the R/V 'Pourquoi pas?' to study gas hydrate distributions in a pockmark field (1141-1199 m below sea surface) at the continental margin of Nigeria. The seafloor drill rig MeBo of MARUM was used to recover sediments as deep as 56.74 m below seafloor. The presence of gas hydrates in specific core sections was deduced from temperature anomalies recorded during continuous records of infrared thermal scanning and anomalies in pore water chloride concentrations. In situ sediment temperature measurements showed elevated geothermal gradients of up to 258 °C/km in the center of the so-called pockmark A which is up to 4.6 times higher than that in the background sediment (72 °C/km). The gas hydrate distribution and thermal regime in the pockmark are largely controlled by the intensity, periodicity and direction of fluid flow. The joint interaction between fluid flow, gas hydrate formation and dissolution, and the thermal regime governs pockmark formation and evolution on the Nigerian continental margin.
