Two marshes near Muscotah and Arrington, Atchison County, northeastern Kansas, yielded a pollen sequence covering the last 25,000 yrs of vegetation development. The earliest pollen spectra are comparable with surface pollen spectra from southern Saskatchewan and southeastern Manitoba and might indicate a rather open vegetation but with some pine, spruce, and birch as the most important tree species, with local stands of alder and willow. This type of vegetation changed about 23,000 yrs ago to a spruce forest, which prevailed in the region until at least 15,000 yrs ago. Because of a hiatus, the vegetation changes resulting in the spread of a mixed deciduous forest and prairie, which was present in the region from 11,000 to 9,000 yrs ago, remain unknown. Prairie vegetation, with perhaps a few trees along the valleys, covered the region until about 5,000 yrs ago, when a re-expansion of deciduous trees began in the lowlands.

The evolution of the Australian monsoon in relation to high-latitude temperature fluctuations over the last termination remains highly enigmatic. Here we integrate high-resolution riverine runoff and dust proxy data from X-ray fluorescence scanner measurements in four well-dated sediment cores, forming a NE-SW transect across the Timor Sea. Our records reveal that the development of the Australian monsoon closely followed the deglacial warming history of Antarctica. A minimum in riverine runoff documents dry conditions throughout the region during the Antarctic Cold Reversal (15-12.9 ka). Massive intensification of the monsoon coincided with Southern Hemisphere warming and intensified greenhouse forcing over Australia during the atmospheric CO2 rise at 12.9-10 ka. We relate the earlier onset of the monsoon in the Timor Strait (13.4 ka) to regional changes in landmass exposure during deglacial sea-level rise. A return to dryer conditions occurred between 8.1 and 7.3 ka following the early Holocene runoff maximum.

A continuous 10-m-long section consisting of roughly two thirds Ethmodiscus rex (a diatom) and one third mixed planktonic foraminifera was identified in a core from 3800 m depth at 9°S on the Indian Ocean's 90°E Ridge. Radiocarbon dates place the onset of deposition of this layer at >30,000 years B.P. and its termination at close to 11,000 years B.P. However, precise dating of the foraminifera from the Ethmodiscus layer itself proved to be impossible owing to the presence of secondary calcite presumably precipitated from the pore waters. During the Holocene, high calcium carbonate content ooze free of diatoms was deposited at this locale. As the site currently lies beneath the pathway taken by upper ocean waters entering the Indian Ocean from the Pacific (via the Indonesian Straits), it appears that during glacial time, thermocline waters moving along this same path provided the silica and other nutrients required by these diatoms.

Six deep sea cores from the eastern equatorial Pacific (EEP) were analyzed for planktonic foraminifera and stable isotopes in order to reconstruct sea surface temperatures (SST) for the last 40 ka. South of the Equatorial Front the abundance of Globorotalia inflata increased, and SST decreased by >5°C (core ODP846B), creating a stronger SST meridional gradient and advection of the Peru Current than present for the ~16-35 ka interval. A sharper SST meridional gradient forced stronger Choco jet events and a moisture increase in western Colombia, which supplied, through the San Juan River and the south-flowing equatorial and the Peru-Chile countercurrents, abundant hemipelagic quartz over the northern Peru basin (core TR163-31B). The Choco jet, and its associated mesoscale convective cells, provoked an increase in snow precipitation over the Central Cordillera of Colombia and the advance of the Murillo glacier. In synchrony with the intensified Choco jet events, the "dry island" effect over the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia intensified, and the level of Fuquene Lake dropped.

Radiocarbon measurements on core tops from the Ontong-Java plateau confirm a previous finding by Berger and Killingley [1982] that at any given water depth, cores taken on the equator have higher accumulation rates and younger core top ages than their off-equator counterparts. Further, these new results fortify the conclusion by Broecker et al. [1991] that the increase in core top radiocarbon age with water depth rules out homogeneous dissolution within the pore waters as the dominant mechanism. Either most of the dissolution must occur prior to burial or it must occur during the first pass through the respiration-CO2-rich upper pore waters after which the calcite grains become armored against further dissolution. A puzzling aspect of this new data set is that despite the sizable difference in accumulation rate, the extent of dissolution as measured by either the CaCO3 content or the ratio of CaCO3 in the >150-µm size fraction to that in the < 63-µm fraction is no different off than on the equator. In order to reconcile the results of this study with those obtained by Hales and Emerson [1996] using in situ electrodes, it is necessary to call upon calcite armoring.

Records of planktonic foraminiferal shell weights for Globigerina bulloides, covering Termination I from four proximal sites at waters depths from 1150 to 4045 m in the northeast Atlantic, demonstrate the influence of dissolution superimposed upon initial shell weight variability. Records of shell weight, unaffected by dissolution, may be used as a reference for interpreting deeper records in terms of preservation history. Combining records of planktonic shell weight (and benthic d13C) from shallow and deep sites suggests that maximum oceanic stratification and incursion of southern sourced deep waters in the North Atlantic occurred at about 18-20 ka, defining the glacial mode of Atlantic circulation. Reduced stratification and enhanced preservation in deeper waters reflect conditions during Heinrich event 1. A state similar to the modern mode of Atlantic circulation was attained by about 10 ka.

A marine sediment core from the leeward margin of Great Bahama Bank (GBB) was subjected to a multiproxy study. The aragonite dominated core MD992201 comprises the past 7230 years in a decadal time resolution and shows sedimentation rates of up to 13.8 m/kyr. Aragonite mass accumulation rates, age differences between planktonic foraminifera and aragonite sediments, and temperature distribution are used to deduce changes in aragonite production rates and paleocurrent strengths. Aragonite precipitation rates on GBB are controlled by exchange of carbonate ions and CO2 loss due to temperature-salinity conditions and biological activity, and these are dependent on the current strength. Paleocurrent strengths on GBB show high current velocities during the periods 6000-5100 years BP, 3500-2700 years BP, and 1600-700 years BP; lower current speeds existed during the time intervals 5100-3500 years BP, 2700-1600 years BP, and 700-100 years BP. Bahamian surface currents are directly linked to the North Atlantic atmospheric circulation, and thus periods with high (low) current speeds are proposed to be phases of strong (weak) atmospheric circulation.

The late Quaternary palaeoenvironmental history of the southern Windmill Islands, East Antarctica, has been reconstructed using diatom assemblages from two long, well-dated sediment cores taken in two marine bays. The diatom assemblage of the lowest sediment layers suggests a warm climate with mostly open water conditions during the late Pleistocene. During the following glacial, the Windmill Islands were covered by grounded ice preventing any in situ bioproductivity. Following deglaciation, a sapropel with a well-preserved diatom assemblage was deposited from ~10?500 cal yr BP. Between ~10?500 and ~4000 cal yr BP, total organic carbon (Corg) and total diatom valve concentrations as well as the diatom species composition suggest relatively cool summer temperatures. Hydrological conditions in coastal bays were characterised by combined winter sea-ice and open water conditions. This extensive period of glacial retreat was followed by the Holocene optimum (~4000 to ~1000 cal yr BP), which occurred later in the southern Windmill Islands than in most other Antarctic coastal regions. Diatom assemblages in this period suggest ice-free conditions and meltwater-stratified waters in the marine bays during summer, which is also reflected in high proportions of freshwater diatoms in the sediments. The diatom assemblage in the upper sediments of both cores indicates Neoglacial cooling from ~1000 cal yr BP, which again led to seasonally persistent sea-ice on the bays. The Holocene optimum and cooling trends in the Windmill Islands did not occur contemporaneously with other Antarctic coastal regions, showing that the here presented record reflects partly local environmental conditions rather than global climatic trends.

We report here the results of a study aimed at providing radiometric age control on glacial events in the Weddell Sea during the late Quaternary. Sediment cores from the eastern continental shelf, where the East Antarctic ice sheet was grounded, have recovered glacial-marine sediments resting on tills and the latter deposits predate the isotope stage 2 last glacial maximum. Sediment cores from the continental slope and rise sampled a prominent ice-rafted debris layer, and radiocarbon ages indicate that this ice-rafting event took place prior to 26 000 yr B.P. Thus, the combined data indicate that significant deglaciation of the Weddell Sea continental shelf took place prior to the last glacial maximum. Our data also suggest that the ice masses that border the Weddell Sea are more extensive than they were during the previous glacial minimum.

We construct age models for a suite of cores from the northeast Atlantic Ocean by means of accelerator mass spectrometer dating of a key core, BOFS 5K, and correlation with the rest of the suite. The effects of bioturbation and foraminiferal species abundance gradients upon the age record are modeled using a simple equation. The degree of bioturbation is estimated by comparing modeled profiles with dispersal of the Vedde Ash layer in core 5K, and we find a mixing depth of roughly 8 cm for sand-sized material. Using this value, we estimate that age offsets between unbioturbated sediment and some foraminifera species after mixing may be up to 2500 years, with lesser effect on fine carbonate (< 10 µm) ages. The bioturbation model illustrates problems associated with the dating of 'instantaneous' events such as ash layers and the 'Heinrich' peaks of ice-rafted detritus. Correlations between core 5K and the other cores from the BOFS suite are made on the basis of similarities in the downcore profiles of oxygen and carbon isotopes, magnetic susceptibility, water and carbonate content, and via marker horizons in X radiographs and ash beds.

The formation of Lake Melkoe (64°51'30''N, 175°14'E, altitude 36 m), one of the largest lakes of the Anadyr Lowland, is related to the moraine left by the Tyellakh Glacier, which originated on the Pekul'nei Ridge. The lake (6 km long and 4.4 km wide) extends in the northwestern direction. The Kholmy Priozernye moraine (16 km long along the arc, 1.5 km wide, and 92-103 masl) surrounds the lake in the west and south. The lake coasts are covered by sand with pebbles and shingle. The flat lake bottom dips toward its central part to a depth of 160 cm. In distinction from many other lakes of the Anadyr Lowland, the thickness of the upper layer of water-saturated sediments overlying compact aleurites in Lake Melkoe is only 5-6 cm. Such a peculiarity of the bottom is explained by the large size of the lake, low sedimentation rates, and frequent storms caused by strong winds. Regional and local vegetation corresponds to a mosaic tundra represented by high shrubs Pinus pumila, Duschekia fruticosa , and hummocky Betula - Ericales - Eriophorum communities. Pinus pumila and Alnus form thickets on the banks of the Anadyr River, coasts of lakes, and moraine slopes.

Hemipelagic muds deposited during the past 5.3 cal kyr in the northern Gulf of Mexico (Orca Basin) contain seven intervals punctuated by relatively coarse siliciclastic grain-size peaks, planktonic faunal turnovers, and negative d13C excursions. We believe these episodes represent megaflood deposits reflecting historically unprecedented outfall of North American floodwater and terrigenous mud plumes into the gulf, resulting in collapse of the open-ocean pelagic ecosystem. The deposits record multidecadal episodes of high continental precipitation and large Mississippi River floods at ~4.7, 3.5, 3.0, 2.5, 2.0, 1.2, and 0.3 cal ka (500-1200-year recurrence interval). Variations in tropical plankton frequencies define submillenial warming intervals that culminate in these fluvial episodes. Strengthened tropical currents in the gulf at these times appear to have increased sea surface temperatures and associated flow of moist gulf air to the midwest. Terrestrial paleohydrologic records support the marine evidence for millennial-scale changes in recurrence of large midwest flood episodes.

Paleomagnetic inclination, declination and relative paleointensity were reconstructed from the sediments of Laguna Potrok Aike in the framework of the International Continental scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) Potrok Aike maar lake Sediment Archive Drilling prOject (PASADO). Here we present the u-channel-based full vector paleomagnetic field reconstruction since 51.2 ka cal BP. The relative paleointensity proxy (RPI) was built by normalising the natural remanent magnetisation with the anhysteretic remanent magnetisation using the average ratio at 4 demagnetisation steps part of the ChRM interval (NRM/ARM10e40 mT). A grain size influence on the RPI was removed using a correction based on the linear relationship between the RPI and the median destructive field of the natural remanent magnetisation (MDFNRM). The new record is compared with other lacustrine and marine records and stacks from the mid- to high-latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere, revealing consistent millennial-scale variability, the identification of the Laschamp and possibly the Mono Lake geomagnetic excursions, and a direction swing possibly associated to the Hilina Pali excursion at 20 ka cal BP. Nonetheless, a global-scale comparison with other high-resolution records located on the opposite side of the Earth and with various dipole field references hint at a different behaviour of the geomagnetic field around southern South America at 46 ka cal BP.
