We studied the effects of elevated CO2 concentration and seawater acidity on inorganic carbon acquisition, photoinhibition and photoprotection as well as growth and respiration in the marine diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana. After having grown under the elevated CO2 level (1000 µatm, pH 7.83) at sub-saturating photosynthetically active radiation (PAR, 75 µmol photons/m**2/s) for 20 generations, photosynthesis and dark respiration of the alga increased by 25% (14.69 ± 2.55 fmol C/cell/h) and by 35% (4.42 ± 0.98 fmol O2/cell/h), respectively, compared to that grown under the ambient CO2 level (390 µatm, pH 8.16), leading to insignificant effects on growth (1.09 ± 0.08 (1/d))v 1.04 ± 0.07 (1/d)). The photosynthetic affinity for CO2 was lowered in the high-CO2 grown cells, reflecting a down-regulation of the CO2 concentrating mechanism (CCM). When exposed to an excessively high level of PAR, photochemical and non-photochemical quenching responded similarly in the low- and high-CO2 grown cells, reflecting that photoinhibition was not influenced by the enriched level of CO2. In T. pseudonana, it appeared that the energy saved due to the down-regulated CCM did not contribute to any additional light stress as previously found in another diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum, indicating differential physiological responses to ocean acidification between these two diatom species.

Increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration is responsible for progressive ocean acidification, ocean warming as well as decreased thickness of upper mixing layer (UML), thus exposing phytoplankton cells not only to lower pH and higher temperatures but also to higher levels of solar UV radiation. In order to evaluate the combined effects of ocean acidification, UV radiation and temperature, we used the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum as a model organism and examined its physiological performance after grown under two CO2 concentrations (390 and 1000 µatm) for more than 20 generations. Compared to the ambient CO2 level (390 µatm), growth at the elevated CO2 concentration increased non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) of cells and partially counteracted the harm to PS II (photosystem II) caused by UV-A and UV-B. Such an effect was less pronounced under increased temperature levels. The ratio of repair to UV-B induced damage decreased with increased NPQ, reflecting induction of NPQ when repair dropped behind the damage, and it was higher under the ocean acidification condition, showing that the increased pCO2 and lowered pH counteracted UV-B induced harm. As for photosynthetic carbon fixation rate which increased with increasing temperature from 15 to 25 °C, the elevated CO2 and temperature levels synergistically interacted to reduce the inhibition caused by UV-B and thus increase the carbon fixation.

In this study, we present a unique high-resolution Holocene record of oceanographic and climatic change based on analyses of diatom assemblages combined with biomarker data from a sediment core collected from the Vega Drift, eastern Antarctic Peninsula (EAP). These data add to the climate framework already established by high-resolution marine sedimentary records from the Palmer Deep, western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP). Heavy sea ice conditions and reduced primary productivity were observed prior to 7.4 ka B.P. in relation with the proximity of the glacial ice melt and calving. Subsequent Holocene oceanographic conditions were controlled by the interactions between the Westerlies-Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC)-Weddell Gyre dynamics. A warm period characterized by short seasonal sea ice duration associated with a southern shift of both ACC and Westerlies field persisted until 5 ka B.P. This warm episode was then followed by climate deterioration during the middle-to-late Holocene (5 to 1.9 ka B.P.) with a gradual increase in annual sea ice duration triggered by the expansion of the Weddell Gyre and a strong oceanic connection from the EAP to the WAP. Increase of benthic diatom species during this period was indicative of more summer/autumn storms, which was consistent with changes in synoptic atmospheric circulation and the establishment of low- to high-latitude teleconnections. Finally, the multicentennial scale variability of the Weddell Gyre intensity and storm frequency during the late Holocene appeared to be associated with the increased El Niño-Southern Oscillation frequency.

A high resolution mixed carbonate and siliciclastic sequence from DSDP Site 594 contains a detailed record of climate change in the late Pliocene. The sequence can be accurately dated by the LAD of Nitzschia weaveri, the LAD of Thalassiosira insigna, the LAD of T. vulnifica and the LAD of T. kolbei diatom datums. Carbonate content and delta18O signatures provide added resolution and place the sequence between isotope stage 100 and 92. The sequence contains well-preserved and diverse dinoflagellate cyst floras. Use of principal component (PCA) and canonical correspondence analyses (CCA) identifies changes in the assemblages that principally reflect warming and cooling trends. Species association with warmer climates included Impagidinium patulum, I. paradoxum and I. sp. cf. paradoxum while those from cooler climates include Invertecysta tabulata and I. velorum. CCA is shown to be a valuable method of determining the past environmental preferences of extinct species such as I. tabulata.

This study presents a new Miocene biostratigraphic synthesis for the high-latitude northeastern North Atlantic region. Via correlations to the bio-magnetostratigraphy and oxygen isotope records of Ocean Drilling Program and Deep Sea Drilling Project Sites, the ages of shallower North Sea deposits have been better constrained. The result has been an improved precision and documentation of the age designations of the existing North Sea foraminiferal zonal boundaries of King (1989) and Gradstein and Bäckström (1996). All calibrations have been updated to the Astronomically Tuned Neogene Time Scale (ATNTS) of Lourens et al. (2004). This improved Miocene biozonation has been achieved through: the updating of age calibrations for key microfossil bioevents, identification of new events, and integration of new biostratigraphic data from a foraminiferal analysis of commercial wells in the North Sea and Norwegian Sea. The new zonation has been successfully applied to two commercial wells and an onshore research borehole. At these high latitudes, where standard zonal markers are often absent, integration of microfossil groups significantly improves temporal resolution. The new zonation comprises 11 Nordic Miocene (NM) Zones with an average duration of 1 to 2 million years. This multi-group combination of a total of 92 bioevents (70 foraminifers and bolboformids; 16 dinoflagellate cysts and acritarchs; 6 marine diatoms) facilitates zonal identification throughout the Nordic Atlantic region. With the highest proportion of events being of calcareous walled microfossils, this zonation is primarily suited to micropaleontologists. A correlation of this Miocene biostratigraphy with a re-calibrated oxygen isotope record for DSDP Site 608 suggests a strong correlation between Miocene planktonic microfossil turnover rates and the inferred paleoclimatic trends. Benthic foraminifera zonal boundaries appear to often coincide with Miocene global sequence boundaries. The biostratigraphic record is punctuated by four main stratigraphic hiati which show variation in their geographic and temporal extent. These are related to the following regional unconformities: basal Neogene, Lower/Middle Miocene ("mid-Miocene unconformity"), basal Upper Miocene and basal Messinian unconformities. Further coring of Neogene sections in the North Sea and Norwegian Sea may better constrain their extent and their effect on the biostratigraphic record.

The biostratigraphic distribution and qualitative relative abundance of Quaternary-Pliocene diatoms from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 188, Sites 1165 (64.380°S, 67.219°E) and 1166 (67.696°S, 74.787°E) offshore from East Antarctica, are documented in this report. The upper ~50 meters below seafloor (mbsf) of Hole 1165B consists of brown diatom-bearing silty clay spanning the upper Pleistocene to lower Pliocene. The diatom stratigraphy indicates a disconformity at ~17.1 mbsf of 0.5- to 0.6-m.y. duration. The integration of biostratigraphic and magnetostratigraphic data identified other disconformities at ~6.0, 14.4, 15.6, and 16.0 mbsf, but the duration of these hiatuses cannot be resolved through diatom biostratigraphy. In Hole 1166A, a narrow interval of diatomaceous Quaternary sediment is identified in the upper 2.92 mbsf and dated biostratigraphically at <0.38 Ma. The remaining Quaternary-Pliocene section is dominated by diamicton, except at ~114 mbsf, where two thin diatomaceous beds are present. The lower bed is ~65 cm thick, 2.5-2.7 to 2.7-3.2 Ma in age, and possibly disconformably overlain by the upper bed, which is ~15 cm thick and 1.8-2.0 to 2.1-2.5 Ma in age. The Pliocene assemblages in Hole 1166A contain components of both Southern Ocean and Antarctic continental shelf (Ross Sea) diatom floras.

Two shelf and upper-slope sites (681 and 686) near present cores of active coastal upwelling on the Peruvian margin were sampled continuously at 7.5 cm intervals down to approximately 25 meters below the seafloor (mbsf). Sedimentary structures were subdivided into homogeneous/bioturbated, laminated, and laminated-varved intervals. Diatom analysis and statistical treatment of data revealed almost persistent upwelling over the last 400,000 yr, with slightly increased upwelling during oxygen-isotope Stages 3, 5, 7, and 8 that resulted in anoxic bottom-water conditions and deposition of laminated/undisturbed primary sedimentary structures.

The Pliocene and Pleistocene periods are known for the onset and consequent amplification of glacial-interglacial cycles. The California margin, situated in the mid-latitudes of the northern Pacific Ocean, is expected to be one of the most interesting regions for Pliocene to Pleistocene paleoceanography because this area occupies a unique position in the ocean-atmosphere system over the region. In this study, we investigated paleoceanographic history, using fossil diatoms, since the Brunhes/Matuyama (B/M) paleomagnetic boundary in which glacial and interglacial periods began to alternate in 100-yr cycles. In Hole 1018A, to a depth corresponding to the beginning of Northern Hemisphere glaciation (late Pliocene), we investigated the responses of the ocean-atmosphere system to stepwise cooling in the California margin. Although the work is still continuing, this data report shows that fossil diatoms of Pliocene and Pleistocene sediments significantly changed both in quality and quantity and implies a possible relationship to global climatic changes.

Samples were examined for diatoms from 22 holes at 11 sites cored by ODP Leg 119 on the Kerguelen Plateau and in Prydz Bay, East Antarctica. Diatoms were observed in Oligocene through Holocene sediments recovered from the Kerguelen Plateau. The diatom flora from the Kerguelen Plateau is characterized by species such as Azpeitia oligocenica, Rocella gelida, Rocella vigilans, and Synedra jouseana in the Oligocene and Crucidenticula nicobarica, Denticulopsis hustedtii, Nitzschia miocenica, and Thalassiosira miocenica in the Miocene. This somewhat cosmopolitan assemblage gives way to a Pliocene and Holocene assemblage characterized by species such as Nitzschia kerguelensis, Thalassiosira inura, and Thalassiosira torokina, which are endemic to the Southern Ocean region. Samples examined from Prydz Bay are generally devoid of diatoms. The exception is Site 739, where diatoms occur sporadically in lower Oligocene and upper Miocene through Quaternary sediments. The Leg 119 diatom biostratigraphic results allow the development of a stratigraphic framework for the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean. This diatom zonation integrates diatom zonations developed previously for other sectors of the Southern Ocean. The zonation proposed here is based on biostratigraphic events of both geographically widespread and endemic species calibrated to the paleomagnetic stratigraphy. As such, this zonation has application throughout the Southern Ocean and allows correlation from the southern high latitudes to the low latitudes.
