Extract from related chapter 5.5.2 in reference: The Orca Seamount was discovered in the central basin of the Bransfield Strait around the posit 62°26'S and 58°24'W on the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula, the most western area of the south polar continent. Through the discovery was made known in 1987, it was only during three bathymetric surveys with high resolution fan echosounders between 1993 and 1995 that the character and complete shape of a remarkable volcano seamount became evident. The data acquisition and processing revealed a spectacular crater of 350 m depth. The relative hight of this 3 km wide "caldera" rim is 550 m with a basal diameter of the seamount cone of 11 km. Its flanks are about 15° steep but in some places the slope reaches up to 36°. The nearly circular shape of the Orca edifice spreads outh with several pronounced spurs, trending parallel to the basin axis in a northeast-southwest direction. The Bransfield Strait is a trough-shaped basin of 400 km length and 2 km depth between the South Shetland Island Arc and the Antarctic Peninsula, formed by rifting behind the islands. The separation of the South Shetland island chain from the peninsula began possibly several million years ago. The active rifting is still going on however, and has caused recent earthquakes and volcanism along the Bransfield Strait. The Strait hosts a chain of submerged seamounts of volcanic origin with the presently inactive Ora Seamount as the most spectacular one. The South Shelfand Island owe their existence to a subduction related volcanism which is perhaps 5-10 times older than the age of Orca and the other seamounts along the central basin of the Bransfield Strait.

Results of heat flow measurements are presented. On the basis of new data on structure of the sedimentary sequence, corrections are introduced that take account of effect of sedimentation. Diagrammatic maps of distribution of observed and deep-seated heat flow have been constructed. A hypothesis is offered that the regional zone of anomalously high heat-flow values on the northern continental slope has been controlled by processes of subsidence of an oceanic plate beneath its continental counterpart.

Abundance and size distribution of ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi in different parts of the Caspian Sea were studied in summer 2001 in relation to environmental conditions. In general, principal differences were found in M. leidyi abundance and population reproduction activity in northern-, middle- and southern Caspian waters. Ctenophore was practically absent in the northern Caspian. In the west of the middle Caspian Sea it penetrated far to the north demonstrating low reproduction activity. In the east the first single comb jellies were pointed out only in the most south of the region. In the warmest and most productive southern part of the Caspian Sea several zones of M. leidyi active breeding were found with total abundance exceeding 6000 #/m**2. Breeding activity and abundance of ctenophores increased here from the east to the west exceeding maximum values along the western coast of the southern Caspian Sea in regions of intensive sprat catching. Dependence of M. leidyi population development on temperature conditions was mentioned. On the base of remote sensed surface temperature, chlorophyll, and suspended mater distribution analysis possible ctenophore settling mechanisms by mesoscale dynamic structures were examined. Practical applications of obtained results are discussed for using effective biological methods to prevent catastrophic consequences of M. leidyi invasion to the Caspian Sea.

Reconstruction of the geologic history of the Yenisey Ridge, which developed as an accretionary collision orogen on the western margin of the Siberian craton is essential to understanding the evolution of mobile belts surrounding older cratons, as well as to resolving the recently much debated problem of whether Siberia was part of the supercontinent Rodinia. Available paleotectonic models suggest that this supercontinent was assembled at the Middle-Late Riphean boundary (1100-900 Ma) as a result of the Grenville orogeny, the first long-lived mountain building event which occurred in geosynclinal areas during the Neogaea. However, the character of crustal evolution at that stage is still speculative due to the lack of reliable and conclusive isotope data. In many current geodynamic models, a common underlying assumption is that the Yenisey Ridge showed very little endogenic activity for 1 Gyr, from the time of Tarak granite emplacement (1900-1840 Ma) to the Middle Neoproterozoic (~750 Ma). On the basis of this assumption, several recent studies suggested the absence of Grenvillian collisional events within the Yenisey Ridge. The results of the SHRIMP II U-Pb analysis of rift-related plagiogranites of the Nemtikha Complex, Yenisey Ridge (1380-1360 Ma) suggest an increase in magmatic activity in the Mesoproterozoic. Interpretation of these results in terms of a supercontinent cycle may help find evidence for possible occurrence of the Grenville orogeny on the western margin of the Siberian craton. With this in mind, we attempted to reconstruct using recent geochronological constraints the evolution of metapelitic rocks from the Teya polymetamorphic complex (TPMC), which is a good example of superimposed zoning of low and medium-pressure facies series. High precision age determinations from rock complexes formed in different geodynamic settings under different thermodynamic conditions and geothermal gradients were used to distinguish several major metamorphic events and unravel their time relations with tectonic and magmatic activity in the region.

During Leg 109 of the Ocean Drilling Program, about 100 m of serpentinized peridotites were drilled on the western wall of the M.A.R. axial rift valley, 45 km south of the Kane Fracture Zone. The present study reports petrological and mineralogical data obtained from 29 small pieces of these ultramafic rocks, including about 60% serpentinized harzburgites, 26% serpentinized lherzolites, 14% serpentinized dunites, and one sample of olivine websterite. Modal analyses show that all these rocks are plagioclase-free four-phase peridotites equilibrated in the spinel lherzolite facies. The estimated average modal composition of the sample set is about 80% olivine, 14% opx, 5% cpx, and 1% spinel, that is, a cpx-poor lherzolite. The well developed porphyroclastic structures and mineralogical characteristics of these rocks indicate their affinity with the group of residual mantle tectonites, among the abyssal peridotites. Features typical of magmatic cumulates are lacking. The high contents in Al2O3 of the cpx (average 5.4%) and of the opx (average 4.3%) porphyroclasts, the low Cr# of the spinels (average 22.9%), and the rather high content in modal cpx (about 5%), indicate a moderate percentage of melting, of the order of 10%-15%. Site 670 peridotites plot close to the least depleted mantle rocks collected in the oceans in most diagrams used to define the average trend of the ocean-floor peridotites. Microprobe traverses across the cores of the exsolved opx and cpx porphyroclasts permitted the recalculation of the magmatic compositions of these pyroxenes: the 'primitive' opx were equilibrated at about 1300°C, probably at the end of the main melting episodes, whereas the 'primitive' cpx show lower equilibration temperatures, at about 1200°C, reflecting a more complex thermal history. The subsolidus evolution is well recorded, from 1200°C to about 950CC, by the exsolved pyroxenes and the olivine and spinel phases. Unusually high blocking temperatures, close to 1000°C, indicate that the peridotite body was cooled very rapidly between 1000°C and the beginning of serpentinization. Oxygen fugacities, calculated for 10 kb and at the blocking temperatures indicated by the olivine/spinel geothermometer, are close to the usual fugacities calculated in oceanic peridotites and basalts (of the order of 10**-10 to 10**-11, on the QFM buffer). Site 670 peridotites have compositions close to those of the peridotites collected in the Kane Fracture Zone area, and obviously belong to the moderately depleted mantle peridotites which characterize abyssal peridotites collected away from mantle plumes and oceanic islands. In particular, they differ from the highly residual harzburgites collected along the M.A.R. over the Azores bulge.

Coralline algae are major calcifiers of significant ecological importance in marine habitats but are among the most sensitive calcifying organisms to ocean acidification. The elevated pCO2 effects were examined in three coralline algal species living in contrasting habitats from intertidal to subtidal zones on the north-western coast of Brittany, France: (i) Corallina elongata, a branched alga found in tidal rock pools, (ii) Lithophyllum incrustans, a crustose coralline alga from the low intertidal zone, and (iii) Lithothamnion corallioides (maerl), a free-living form inhabiting the subtidal zone. Metabolic rates were assessed on specimens grown for one month at varying pCO2: 380 (current pCO2), 550, 750 and 1000 µatm (elevated pCO2). There was no pCO2 effect on gross production in C. elongata and L. incrustans but L. incrustans respiration strongly increased with elevated pCO2. L. corallioides gross production slightly increased at 1000 µatm, while respiration remained unaffected. Calcification rates decreased with pCO2 in L. incrustans (both in the light and dark) and L. corallioides (only in the light), while C. elongata calcification was unaffected. This was consistent with the lower skeletal mMg/Ca ratio of C. elongata (0.17) relative to the two other species (0.20). L. incrustans had a higher occurrence of bleaching that increased with increasing pCO2. pCO2 could indirectly impact this coralline species physiology making them more sensitive to other stresses such as diseases or pathogens. These results underlined that the physiological response of coralline algae to near-future ocean acidification is species-specific and that species experiencing naturally strong pH variations were not necessarily more resistant to elevated pCO2 than species from more stable environment.

The Snake Pit hydrothermal field is located on the top of a neovolcanic rise on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at sea depths between 3460 and 3510 m. It was surveyed during several oceanological expeditions including DSDP Legs. Additional scientific materials were obtained in 2002 and 2003 during expedition onboard R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh with two Mir deep-sea manned submersibles. Three eastern hydrothermal mounds (Moose, Beehive, and Fir Tree) are located on the upper part of the eastern slope of the rise over a common fractured pedestal composed of fragments of massive sulfides. The western group of hydrothermal deposits is encountered on the western slope of the axial graben. Within this mature hydrothermal field, which was formed over the past 4000 years, we studied morphology of the hydrothermal mounds, chemistry and mineralogy of hydrothermal deposits, chemistry of sulfide minerals, and isotope composition of sulfur in them.

During GANOVEX VI new gravity data were collected along an east-west profile in North Victoria Land south of the Drygalski Ice Tongue, extending 150 km across the Transantarctic Mountains, and comprising 21 data points. Thirty five additional data points were collected over a small area near Brimstone Peak, near the western end of the regional profile. The survey south of the Drygalski has been connected to northern gravity data (GANOVEX V) by a survey line of 12 points. All data have been terrain corrected, and are further constrained by satellite elevation (GPS) and radar ice-thickness measurements. A pronounced regional Bouguer gravity gradient decreasing to the west by approximately 3 mgal/km is superimposed over a coast-parallel belt of granitoid basement rock. West of this belt the local gravity fields become mote variable. Over Beta Peak (Ferrar dolerite) a 50 mgal spike is obser- ved. Within this area, the Ferrar sills are exposed at the surface. West of Brimstone Peak (Ferrar/Kirk patrick sequences), a smooth regional gradient appears to reassert itself. We interpret the initial gradient east (oceanward) of the break-in-slope to be representative of the crust/mantle boundary within the study area. We interpret the initial break-in-slope and the apparent flattening of the regional gradient to be an effect of the N-S trending zone of dense Ferrar sills and associated deep crusttil fractionate replacing less dense basement. We attribute the variability of the local field to be the product of sub-glacial density contrasts that cannot be removed. The regional gravity gradient of the profile is steeper than that observed to the north (Mt. Melbourne quadrangle) and shallower than that reported to the south (McMurdo Sound). The absolute values of the coastal points of origin south of the Drygalski and within the Mt. Melbourne quadrangle differ by 60 to 100 mgal. In addition, topographic relief within the regional transect area is subdued relative to the Transantarctic Mountains to the north and south. We speculate that the root structure of the Transantarctic Mountains undergoes a change somewhere between the Mt. Melbourne quadrangle and the region south of the Drygalski Ice Tongue.

Since 1890 the variations of the fronts of numerous glaciers in the Eastern Alps have been measured for the Österreichischer Alpenverein. The present paper presents the results of these measurements and the percentage of advancing, retreating, and stationary glaciers as calculated for each year from the total number of glaciers measured. The measurements reveal two distinct periods of advance, i. e. one period from 1890 to 1900 with up to 47% of glaciers advancing, and one period from 1909 to 1928 with up to 75% of glaciers advancing. The period from 1928 to 1964 is marked by a strong retreat of glaciers. A comparison with the results of measurements of glaciers in the Western Alps of Switzerland shows good agreement. The behaviour of glaciers corresponds well to the climatic conditions prevailing during the summer months of the 80 years observed.

During Leg 43, six holes (Sites 382-387) were drilled in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean; locations of sites are shown in Figure 1. Lower Cretaceous to Quaternary calcareous nannofossils were found in 127 of 189 cores recovered during the leg. The ages and zonal assignments of these fossiliferous cores based upon light-microscopical observation are given in Table 1. An almost continuous succession of nannofossil assemblages of the lower Maestrichtian to upper Paleocene is present at Site 384. A detailed investigation was conducted on samples at this site, and the evolution of approximately 50 species is documented through almost the entire Paleocene epoch.
