In the biologically productive area on the Southwest Africa shelf a current process of diagenetic phosphorite formation occurs. Remains of phytoplankton are the main source of phosphorus in host bottom sediments. Phosphorus concentrates in nodules due to its redistribution in bottom sediments and precipitation from interstitial waters. Accumulation of the phosphate nodules, as well as of scattered fish bone debris in sediments occurs at sudden change in hydrological conditions and removal of fine sediment fractions due to increased bottom currents or during transgressions.

The remote South Sandwich arc is an archipelago of small volcanic islands and seamounts entirely surrounded by deep water and about 600 km away from the closest island, South Georgia. As some of the youngest islands (< 5 m.y.) in the Southern Ocean they are ideal for studying colonization processes of the seabed by benthic fauna, but are rarely investigated because of remoteness and extreme weather. The current study attempted to quantify the richness and abundance of the epibenthic macrofauna around the Southern Thule group by taking five epibenthic sledge samples along a depth transect including three shelf (one at 300 m and two at 500 m) and two slope stations (1000 and 1500 m). Our aim was to investigate higher taxon richness and community composition in an isolated Antarctic locality, since recent volcanic eruptions between 1964 and 1997. We examined patterns across all epibenthic macrofauna at phylum and class levels, and investigated trends in some model groups of crustaceans to order and family level. We found that abundance was highest in the shallowest sample and decreased with depth. Shelf samples (300 and 500 m) were dominated by molluscs and malacostracans while at the deeper stations (1000 and 1500 m) nematodes were the most abundant taxon. Surprisingly, the shallow shelf was dominated by animals with restricted dispersal abilities, such as direct developing brooders (malacostracans) or those with lecithotrophic larvae (bivalves of the genus Yoldiella, most bryozoan species). Despite Southern Thule's geological youth, recent eruptions, and its remoteness the shallow shelf was rich in higher taxa (phyla/classes) as well as orders and families of our model groups. Future work at higher taxonomic resolution (species level) should greatly increase understanding of how life has reached and established on these young and highly disturbed seabeds.

Grain size, shape and roundness of rock fragments, texture, composition of bottom sediments from the Sea of Okhotsk are under study. These data are compared with parameters of modern lithodynamic conditions of the sea and genetic types of deposits are identified. These criteria are used for partition of Holocene and Upper Pleistocene sediment series and for identifying conditions of their formation. Dependence of structure of different genetic types of deposits on intensity of hydrodynamic processes, of terrigenous contribution, and on direction consedimentational tectonic movements is under consideration.

The ongoing oceanic uptake of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) is significantly altering the carbonate chemistry of seawater, a phenomenon referred to as ocean acidification. Experimental manipulations have been increasingly used to gauge how continued ocean acidification will potentially impact marine ecosystems and their associated biogeochemical cycles in the future; however, results amongst studies, particularly when performed on natural communities, are highly variable, which may reflect community/environment-specific responses or inconsistencies in experimental approach. To investigate the potential for identification of more generic responses and greater experimentally reproducibility, we devised and implemented a series (n = 8) of short-term (2-4 days) multi-level (>=4 conditions) carbonate chemistry/nutrient manipulation experiments on a range of natural microbial communities sampled in Northwest European shelf seas. Carbonate chemistry manipulations and resulting biological responses were found to be highly reproducible within individual experiments and to a lesser extent between geographically separated experiments. Statistically robust reproducible physiological responses of phytoplankton to increasing pCO2, characterised by a suppression of net growth for small-sized cells (<10 µm), were observed in the majority of the experiments, irrespective of natural or manipulated nutrient status. Remaining between-experiment variability was potentially linked to initial community structure and/or other site-specific environmental factors. Analysis of carbon cycling within the experiments revealed the expected increased sensitivity of carbonate chemistry to biological processes at higher pCO2 and hence lower buffer capacity. The results thus emphasise how biogeochemical feedbacks may be altered in the future ocean.

Aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were examined in the surface layer of bottom sediments from the eastern part of the Sakhalin Island shelf (materials were sampled in summer 2002). Concentrations of hydrocarbons were determined to know changed since beginning of development of oil fields (compared with earlier years). According to distribution of markers in hydrocarbon compositions, bottom sediments are dominated by allochthonous (terrigenous) hydrocarbons that are the most stable compounds. Occurrence of transformed anthropogenic oil alkanes that have never been found before may be indicative of increasing pollution in the region.
