In three veins from the lower part of Deep Sea Drilling Project Hole 504B, 298 meters below the top of basement, primary augite is replaced by aegirine-augite. This transformation occurs only in subophitic basalts, at the contact with veins which always include a dark-olive, Mg-rich clay mineral. Talc occurs in one of these veins; it can be regarded either as a vein constituent or as a product of augite alteration. Melanite (Ca,Fe,Ti-rich garnet) appears in only one of these three veins, where a Ca-carbonate is associated with a Mg-rich clay mineral. The occurrence of melanite in Hole 504B could be due to the conjunction of particular conditions: (1) basalt with a subophitic texture, (2) presence of hydrothermal fluids carrying Ca, Fe, Si, Ti, Al, Mg, and Na, (3) rather high temperatures. Possibly the melanite and aegirine-augite formed by deuteric alteration.

Results of comprehensive geological, geophysical and geochemical studies carried out in the Cape Verde Fracture Zone (Central Atlantic) during Cruise 9 of R/V ''Antares'' (1990-1991) are published in the book. Detailed characterization of various bedrock complexes (ultrabasites, gabbroids, dolerites, basalts, metamorphic rocks) is given. Geological conditions of newly found hydrothermal mineralization in the area are described. Problems of ore melts are under consideration. New data on hydrochemical anomalies and heat flow are given. The book contains original materials on sedimentary formations of the area.

Sedimentary records from California's Northern Channel Islands and the adjacent Santa Barbara Basin (SBB) indicate intense regional biomass burning (wildfire) at the Ållerød-Younger Dryas boundary (~13.0-12.9 ka) (All age ranges in this paper are expressed in thousands of calendar years before present [ka]. Radiocarbon ages will be identified and clearly marked "14C years".). Multiproxy records in SBB Ocean Drilling Project (ODP) Site 893 indicate that these wildfires coincided with the onset of regional cooling and an abrupt vegetational shift from closed montane forest to more open habitats. Abrupt ecosystem disruption is evident on the Northern Channel Islands at the Ållerød-Younger Dryas boundary with the onset of biomass burning and resulting mass sediment wasting of the landscape. These wildfires coincide with the extinction of Mammuthus exilis [pygmy mammoth]. The earliest evidence for human presence on these islands at 13.1-12.9 ka (~11,000-10,900 14C years) is followed by an apparent 600-800 year gap in the archaeological record, which is followed by indications of a larger-scale colonization after 12.2 ka. Although a number of processes could have contributed to a post 18 ka decline in M. exilis populations (e.g., reduction of habitat due to sea-level rise and human exploitation of limited insular populations), we argue that the ultimate demise of M. exilis was more likely a result of continental scale ecosystem disruption that registered across North America at the onset of the Younger Dryas cooling episode, contemporaneous with the extinction of other megafaunal taxa. Evidence for ecosystem disruption at 13-12.9 ka on these offshore islands is consistent with the Younger Dryas boundary cosmic impact hypothesis [Firestone et al., 2007, doi:10.1073/pnas.0706977104].

A series of 22 sediment samples of Cretaceous and Cenozoic age from DSDP Holes 603, 603B, and 603C at the continental rise off the northeastern American coast near Cape Hatteras was investigated by organic geochemical methods including organic carbon determination, Rock-Eval pyrolysis, gas chromatography and combined gas chromatography/mass spectrometry of extractable hydrocarbons, and kerogen microscopy. An abundance of terrigenous organic matter, including larger coal particles (almost exclusively consisting of huminite/vitrinite macerals), is the dominant characteristic of the organofacies types at Site 603. Marine organic matter, mostly structurally degraded and in the form of fecal pellets, was preserved in the Valanginian laminated marls and in Cenomanian black claystone turbidites. Long-chain nalkanes reflect the terrigenous imprint in the nonaromatic hydrocarbon fractions, whereas a second maximum at lower carbon numbers in most cases is caused by the presence of more mature recycled organic matter. Abundant isoprenoid and steroid hydrocarbons were found in sediments containing mainly marine organic matter, whereas hopanoids reflect the ubiquitous microbial activity. The organic matter in the Site 603 sediments, in so far as it is not recycled, is thermally immature.

The Yamato Basin basement in the Sea of Japan was drilled below the sediment pile during Legs 127 and 128. Two superposed volcanic complexes are distinguished. The upper complex consists of continental tholeiite sills dated around 20-18 Ma and attributed to the rifting stage of the backarc basin. The lower complex consists of backarc basin basalts probably intruded below the upper complex during the spreading stage. Trace-element compositions and Sr and Nd isotopic signatures may be explained by mixing of at least two end members with a very small addition of crustal and subducted sediment component. Thus, upwelling of mantle diapir occurred during the rifting stage. Contribution of the depleted mantle increased in the spreading stage. The Neogene magmatic history of the Japan Sea is reviewed in the light of the ODP new data.

During the 33th voyage of the R/V "Vityaz" in the Indian Ocean iron-manganese nodules were collected at several stations. Both nodules and associated sediments were analysed by spectral analysis over 30 chemical elements. Radioactivity measurements were also performed on these samples.

The basement cored at Site 1201 (west Philippine Basin) during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 195 consists of a 91-m-thick sequence of basalts, mostly pillow lavas and perhaps one sheet lava flow, with a few intercalations of hyaloclastite and interpillow sedimentary material. Hydrothermal alteration pervasively affected the basalt sequence, giving rise to a variety of secondary minerals such as K-Fe-Mg-clay minerals, oxyhydroxides and clay minerals mixtures, natrolite group zeolites, analcite, alkali feldspar, and carbonate. The primary minerals of pillow and sheet basalts that survived the intense hydrothermal alteration were investigated by electron microprobe with the aim of characterizing their chemical composition and variability. The primary minerals are mostly plagioclase, ranging in composition from bytownite through labradorite to andesine, chromian-magnesian-diopside, and spinels, both Ti magnetite (partially maghemitized) and chromian spinel. Overall, the chemical features of the primary minerals of Site 1201 basalts correspond to the primitive character of the bulk rocks, suggesting that the parent magma of these basalts was a mafic tholeiitic magma that most likely only suffered limited fractional crystallization and crystallized at high temperatures (slightly below 1200°C) and under increasing fO2 conditions. The major element composition of clinopyroxene suggests a backarc affinity of the mantle source of Site 1201 basement.

Gabbros drilled from the shallow (720 m) east wall of the Atlantis II transform on the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR; 32°43.40', 57°16.00') provide the most complete record of the stratigraphy and composition of the oceanic lower crust recovered from the ocean basins to date. Lithologies recovered include gabbro, olivine gabbro, troctolite, trondhjemite, and unusual iron-titanium (FeTi) oxide-rich gabbro containing up to 30% FeTi oxides. The plutonic rock sequence represents a tholeiitic fractionation trend ranging from primitive magmas having Mg numbers of 67 to 69 that fractionated troctolites, to highly evolved liquids that crystallized two-pyroxene, FeTi oxide-rich gabbros and, ultimately, trondhjemite. Isotopic compositions of unaltered Leg 118 gabbros are distinct from Indian Ocean mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) in having higher 143Nd/144Nd (0.51301-0.51319) and lower 206Pb/204Pb values (17.35-17.67); 87Sr/86Sr values (0.7025-0.7030) overlap those of SWIR basalts, but are generally lower than MORBs from the Southeast Indian Ridge or the Rodrigues Triple Junction. More than one magma composition may have been introduced into the magma chamber during its crystallization history, as suggested by the higher 87Sr/86Sr, 206Pb/204Pb, and lower 143Nd/144Nd values of chromium-rich olivine gabbros from the bottom of Hole 735B. Whole-rock gabbro and plagioclase mineral separate 87Sr/86Sr values are uniformly low (0.7027-0.7030), irrespective of alteration and deformation. By contrast, 87Sr/86Sr values for clinopyroxene (0.7025-0.7039) in the upper half of Hole 735B are higher than coexisting plagioclase and reflect extensive replacement of clinopyroxene by amphibole. Hydrothermal veins and breccias have elevated 87Sr/86Sr values (0.7029-0.7035) and indicate enhanced local introduction of seawater strontium. Oxygen- and hydrogen-isotope results show that secondary amphiboles have uniform dD values of -49 to -54 per mil and felsic hydrothermal veins range from -46 to - 77 per mil. Oxygen-isotope data for secondary amphibole and visibly altered gabbros range to low values (+1.0-+5.5 per mil), and O-isotope disequilibrium between coexisting pyroxene and plagioclase pairs from throughout the stratigraphic column indicates that seawater interacted with much of the gabbro section, but at relatively low water/rock ratios. This is consistent with the persistence of low 87Sr/86Sr values, even in gabbros that were extensively deformed and altered.

The concentrations of mercury (Hg) and other trace metals (Ni, Cu, Zn, Mo, Ba, Re, U) and the Hg isotopic composition were examined across a dramatic redox and productivity transition in a mid-Pleistocene Mediterranean Sea sapropel sequence. Characteristic trace metal enrichment in organic-rich layers was observed, with organic-rich sapropel layers ranging in Hg concentration from 314 to 488 ng/g (avg = 385), with an average enrichment in Hg by a factor of 5.9 compared to organic-poor background sediments, which range from 39 to 94 ng/g Hg (avg = 66). Comparison of seawater concentrations and sapropel accumulations of trace metals suggests that organic matter quantitatively delivers Hg to the seafloor. Near complete scavenging of Hg from the water column renders the sapropel Hg isotopic composition representative of mid-Pleistocene Mediterranean seawater. Sapropels have an average d202Hg value of -0.91 per mil ± 0.15 per mil (n = 5, 1 SD) and D199Hg value of 0.11 per mil ± 0.03 per mil (n = 5, 1 SD). Background sediments have an average d202Hg of -0.76 per mil ± 0.16 per mil (n = 5, 1 SD) and D199Hg of 0.05 per mil ± 0.01 per mil (n = 5, 1 SD), which is indistinguishable from the sapropel values. We suggest that the sapropel isotopic composition is most representative of the mid-Pleistocene Tyrrhenian Sea.

At Site 546, below the Mazagan Escarpment at a water depth of 4 km, 36 m of salt rock was cored from the top of one of a field of salt domes. The core was studied by thin section and a variety of geochemical procedures. The salt rock contains 0.1 to 3% carnallite and lesser amounts of sylvite and polyhalite, which with the corresponding high level of bromide place it within the potash evaporite facies. The bromide profile is of a dominantly marine evaporite deposited in moderately shallow brine which, however, was not repeatedly desiccated. A mineralogical argument suggests that the brine surface was not below sea level. An average of about 5% elastics, with dispersed anhydrite, darken the salt rock to deep shades of red, brown, and gray green. Most of the included materials are in highly deformed boudins or dispersions in the salt rock that has also undergone cataclasis in a subsequent, probably tectonic, deformation. The salt rock is slightly deficient in anhydrite, and the usual separate beds and laminae of anhydrite are virtually absent. Stable isotope ratios of sulfur and oxygen in the sulfate are clearly derived from sea water of Permian to Scythian age, in contrast to the late Triassic or Early Jurassic age of evaporites onshore in Morocco and Portugal and the corresponding evaporites offshore Maritime Canada. In contrast to those evaporites off the axis of Atlantic rifting, the salt at Site 546 may have been deposited in a very early central rift fed by marine waters from Tethys through the Gibraltar or South Atlas fracture zones.
