Drilling at Ocean Drilling Program Site 802 in the central Mariana Basin, northwest Pacific Ocean, revealed an unexpected 222-m-thick sequence of well-cemented tuff of Miocene age. The deposits are unusual in that their source is presumably an unmapped seamount and they exhibit several peculiar petrological and mineralogical features. The well-developed secondary mineral sequence which includes analcime is rare in such relatively young, unburied deposits, in an area where there is little other evidence of hydrothermal activity. The massive tuff section also contains abundant fissure veins made of a rare silicate carbonate sulfate hydroxide hydrate of calcium, called thaumasite, which has not before been described in deep submarine deposits. The smectite-zeolite-thaumasite paragenesis coincides with the presence of chloride and calcium-enriched interstitial waters. The diagenetic evolution of the deposit appears to have been largely controlled by the depositional mode. The discharges of disaggregated and rejuvenated volcaniclasts seem to have been abrupt and repeated. The Miocene tuff at Site 802 thus provides new insights on the interactions between basaltic glass, biogenic phases, and seawater, in a specific deep-sea environment.

Salinity increase in the subtropical gyre system may have pre-conditioned the North Atlantic Ocean for a rapid return to stronger overturning circulation and high-latitude warming following meltwater events during the Last Glacial period. Here we investigate the Gulf Stream - subtropical gyre system properties over Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) cycles 14 to 12, including Heinrich ice-rafting event 5. During the Holocene and Last Glacial Maximum a positive gradient in surface dwelling planktonic foraminifera d18O (Globigerinoides ruber) can be observed between the Gulf Stream and subtropical gyre, due to decreasing temperature, increasing salinity, and a change from summer to year-round occurrence of G. ruber. We assess whether this gradient was a common feature during stadial-interstadial climate oscillations of Marine Isotope Stage 3, by comparing existing G. ruber d18O from ODP Site 1060 (subtropical gyre location) and new data from ODP Site 1056 (Gulf Stream location) between 54 and 46 ka. Our results suggest that this gradient was largely absent during the period studied. During the major warm DO interstadials 14 and 12 we infer a more zonal and wider Gulf Stream, influencing both ODP Sites 1056 and 1060. A Gulf Stream presence during these major interstadials is also suggested by the large vertical d18O gradient between shallow dwelling planktonic foraminifera species, especially G. ruber, and the deep dwelling species Globorotalia inflata at site 1056, which we associate with strong summer stratification and Gulf Stream presence. A major reduction in this vertical d18O gradient from 51 ka until the end of Heinrich event 5 at 48.5 ka suggests site 1056 was situated within the subtropical gyre in this mainly cold period, from which we infer a migration of the Gulf Stream to a position nearer to the continental shelf, indicative of a narrower Gulf Stream with possibly reduced transport.

A composite late Maastrichtian (65.5 to 68.5 Ma) marine osmium (Os) isotope record, based on samples from the Southern Ocean (ODP Site 690), the Tropical Pacific Ocean (DSDP Site 577), the South Atlantic (DSDP Site 525) and the paleo-Tethys Ocean demonstrates that subaerially exposed pelagic carbonates can record seawater Os isotope variations with a fidelity comparable to sediments recovered from the seafloor. New results provide robust evidence of a 20% decline in seawater 187Os/188Os over a period of about 200 kyr early in magnetochron C29r well below the Cretaceous-Paleogene Boundary (KPB), confirming previously reported low-resolution data from the South Atlantic Ocean. New results also confirm a second more rapid decline in 187Os/188Os associated with the KPB that is accompanied by a significant increase in Os concentrations. Complementary platinum (Pt) and iridium (Ir) concentration data indicate that the length scale of diagenetic remobilization of platinum group elements from the KPB is less than 1 m and does not obscure the pre-KPB decline in 187Os/188Os. Increases in bulk sediment Ir concentrations and decreases in bulk carbonate content that coincide with the Os isotope shift suggest that carbonate burial flux may have been lower during the initial decline in 187Os/188Os. We speculate that diminished carbonate burial rate may have been the result of ocean acidification caused by Deccan volcanism.

Organic-rich, moderately to sparsely nannofossiliferous Lower Cretaceous claystones ("black shales") were cored at two Ocean Drilling Program Leg 113 sites on the continental slope of East Antarctica off Dronning Maud Land. A 39 m section at Site 692 yielded a Neocomian assemblage of limited diversity with rare Cyclagelosphaera deflandrei, Diadorhombus rectus, and Cruciellipsis cuvillieri, and is probably Valanginian in age. A 70-m section at Site 693 is assigned to the Rhagodiscus angustus Zone (late Aptian-early Albian in age). The latter zone is represented at DSDP sites on the Falkland Plateau, but equivalents to the Neocomian section are absent there, probably due to a disconformity. Watznaueria barnesae is the dominant species at both ODP sites, but it shares dominance with Repagulum parvidentatum at Site 693, where they total 70%-90% of the assemblage; their dominance is attributed to a paleogeographic setting within a restricted basin rather than to postdepositional dissolution of other species. The evolutionary development of this restricted basin and its eventual ventilation in early Albian times is discussed in terms of the regional stratigraphy and the breakup and dispersal of southwestern Gondwanaland. One new species, Corollithion covingtonii, is described.

Cherts recovered during DSDP Leg 72 from Rio Grande Rise sediments (Site 516) consist of both cristobalite and quartz, and contain ghosts of foraminifers and (more rare) radiolarians. Porcelanite made of disordered cristobalite is found in most old enclosing sediments. Local dissolution of siliceous microfossils during diagenesis is the most likely source of the silica required for the chert formation. As sediment age increases, the proportion of biogenic silica decreases and authigenic silica increases.

On Leg 85, 16 holes were cored at five sites. Thirteen of the holes were cored with the hydraulic piston corer (HPC) or the variable-length hydraulic piston corer (VLHPC) or both; the remainder were rotary drilled. Partially duplicating stratigraphic sections were successfully recovered by hydraulic piston coring at Sites 572 to 575. Sub-bottom penetration was deepest (about 210 m) at HPC Hole 575A, which bottomed in lower Miocene sediments. Penetration by hydraulic piston coring was limited at all sites not by the failure of the corer to stroke out but by the excessive force (overpull) necessary to retrieve the core barrel from the hole. The sediments recovered are relatively uniform siliceous-calcareous oozes to calcareous ooze-chalks. Paleomagnetic measurements were made at all stratigraphic levels, but magnetostratigraphic sequences could be resolved only for the Pleistocene-Pliocene and for brief upper, middle, and lower Miocene sections. In the younger and less consolidated sediments, the declination often shows large-scale azimuthal rotations downcore. These smooth trends vary from core to core, indicating either rotation between the sediment and the core liner or the rotation of the core barrel during the coring or retrieval process. Thus, azimuthal orientation of the samples was impossible even though a Kuster azimuthal orientation tool was used during the hydraulic piston coring. At all sites, the downhole shift from mainly siliceous to mainly calcareous ooze-chalk coincided with a decrease in NRM intensity of at least one order of magnitude, to 1.0*10**-8 G. Diagenesis is the probable reason for this behavior, although the dilution of magnetic carriers as the result of higher accumulation rates may also be a factor. A tectonic analysis using data from samples with stable remanence indicates a northward plate motion of about 0.3 deg/m.y. during the last 18 m.y., a rate that agrees with most previous reconstructions of Pacific Plate motion.

Palynological studies were carried out on Paleogene sections from Sites 693 and 696 of Ocean Drilling Project Leg 113 in the Weddell Sea region. Dinoflagellate cysts and sporomorphs were recovered at Site 696 (61°S, 42°W) indicating a middle Eocene to late Eocene/earliest Oligocene age for a glauconitic silt/sandstone. At Site 693 (70°S, 14°W) early Oligocene siliciclastic mud contains a low diversity palynoflora. In an upper Oligocene section (Site 693) only rare, reworked Mesozoic palynomorphs were encountered. Palynological data from Kerogen analyses, dinocysts, and sporomorphs are used to reconstruct the climatic change on the South Orkney microcontinent from the middle Eocene to the late Eocene/earliest Oligocene at Site 696 and the late early Oligocene/early late Oligocene time interval at Site 693 near the continental margin. The middle Eocene was a warm period in the Orkney region with good growing conditions for a warm temperate Nothofagus/conifer forest with an admixture of Proteaceae. Temperate surface water masses, which allowed the growth of a reasonably diverse dinocyst assemblage (ca. 15-20 species), persisted until the end of the Eocene at Site 696. Late early Oligocene sediments of Site 693 (Antarctic continental margin) contain only a low diversity dinocyst flora (two species). The major Cenozoic cooling event in the Weddell Sea region probably occurred at the Eocene/Oligocene boundary. A second dramatic climatic deterioration seems to have taken place during the late early/early late Oligocene, when dinocysts disappeared at the Dronning Maud Land margin area.

At Site 535, the four lithologic units of Cretaceous age are controlled by two types of sedimentologic facies: (1) the massive light-colored limestones or marly limestones in which the total organic carbon (TOC) content is low and the organic matter more or less oxidized and (2) laminated dark facies in which the TOC content is higher and associated with a well-preserved organic matter of Type II origin. Very little typical Type III organic matter occurs in the whole series from late Berriasian to Aptian and Cenomanian. Fluctuations from oxidizing to reducing environments of deposition are proposed to account for the variations in properties of the Type II organic matter between the different facies. Dark laminated layers are good but immature potential source rocks: petroleum potential is often higher than 2 kg HC/t of rock.

Basalts from Maud Rise, Weddell Sea, are vesicular and olivine-phyric. Major, trace, and rare earth element concentrations are similar to those of alkali basalts from ocean islands and seamounts. The rocks are low in MgO, Cr, Ni, and Sc, and high in TiO2, K2O, P2O5, Zr, and LREE contents. The abundance of "primary" biotite and apatite in the matrix indicates the melting of a hydrous mantle. Prevalence of olivine and absence of plagioclase in the rocks suggests that the volatile in the melt was an H2O-CO2 mixture, where H2O was <0.5. Mantle derived xenocrysts in the basalt include corroded orthopyroxene, chromite, apatite, and olivine. Olivine (Fo90) is too magnesian to be in equilibrium with the basalts, as they contain only 5-6 wt% MgO. Based on the presence of mantle xenocrysts, the high concentration of incompatible elements, the spatial and chemical affinity with other ocean island basalts from the area, and the relative age of the basalt (overlain by late Campanian sediments), it is suggested that Maud Rise was probably generated by hot-spot activity, possible during a ridge crest jump prior to 84 Ma (anomaly 34 time). Iddingsite, a complex intergrowth of montmorillonite and goethite, is the major alteration product of second generation olivine. It is suggested that iddingsite crystallized at low temperatures (<200°C) from an oxidized fluid during deuteric alteration. Vesicles are commonly filled by zeolites which have been replaced by K-feldspars.
