In three typical sandy soils of Northern Germany the mobility of radioactive fission products of technetium, iodine, ruthenium and zirconium have been investigated in dependence of the hydrodynamic and physico-chemical soil properties. The laboratory experiments, which simulated fall-out events, used soil columns (1 m length, 30 cm diameter) taken as undisturbed as possible. By measurements of the breakthrough curves in the percolate and of the depth distribution of radionuclides in the soil columns after 6 months the average transport velocity could be determined. These values could be compared with the average water velocity measured by 3H tagging. Three qualitative mobility relations were observed: Ranker: Tc > Ru > I > Zr; Podsol: Tc > Ru > I > Zr; Brown forest soil: Tc = Ru > I > Zr. Relations between some physico-chemical soil properties and the retardation of radionuclides due to adsorption could be observed (eg. retardation of iodine and technetium by organic substances). The average retardation factors of the radionuclides and the hydrodynamic soil parameters are used in a model which gives a quantitative assessment of the hazard of groundwater contamination by a fall-out event in areas covered with comparable soils.

Metabolic processes have the potential to modulate the effects of ocean acidification (OA) in nearshore macroalgal beds. We investigated whether natural mixed assemblages of the articulate coralline macroalgae Arthrocardia corymbosa and understory crustose coralline algae (CCA) altered pH and O2 concentrations within and immediately above their canopies. In a unidirectional flume, we tested the effect of water velocity (0-0.1 m/s), bulk seawater pH (ambient pH 8.05, and pH 7.65), and irradiance (photosynthetically saturating light and darkness) on pH and O2 concentration gradients, and the derived concentration boundary layer (CBL) thickness. At bulk seawater pH 7.65 and slow velocities (0 and 0.015 m/s), pH at the CCA surface increased to 7.90-8.00 in the light. Although these manipulations were short term, this indicates a potential daytime buffering capacity that could alleviate the effects of OA. Photosynthetic activity also increased O2 concentrations at the surface of the CCA. However, this moderating capacity was flow dependent; the CBL thickness decreased from an average of 26.8 mm from the CCA surface at 0.015 m/s to 4.1 mm at 0.04 m/s. The reverse trends occurred in the dark, with respiration causing pH and O2 concentrations to decrease at the CCA surface. At all flow velocities the CBL thicknesses (up to 68 mm) were much greater than those previously published, indicating that the presence of canopies can alter the CBL substantially. In situ, the height of macroalgal canopies can be an order of magnitude larger than those used here, indicating that the degree of buffering to OA will be context dependent.

The seismic data were acquired north of the Knipovich Ridge on the western Svalbard margin during cruise MSM21/4. They were recorded using a Geometrics GeoEel streamer of either 120 channels (profiles p100-p208) or 88 channels (profiles p300-p805) with a group spacing of 1.56 m and a sampling rate of 2 kHz. A GI-Gun (2×1.7 l) with a main frequency of ~150 Hz was used as a source and operated at a shot interval of 6-8 s. Processing of profiles p100-p208 and p600-p805: Positions for each channel were calculated by backtracking along the profiles from the GI-Gun GPS positions. The shot gathers were analyzed for abnormal amplitudes below the seafloor reflection by comparing neighboring traces in different frequency bands within sliding time windows. To suppress surface-generated water noise, a tau-p filter was applied in the shot gather domain. Common mid-point (CMP) profiles were then generated through crooked-line binning with a CMP spacing of 1.5625 m. A zero-phase band-pass filter with corner frequencies of 60 Hz and 360 Hz was applied to the data. Based on regional velocity information from MCS data [Sarkar, 2012], an interpolated and extrapolated 3D interval velocity model was created below the digitized seafloor reflection of the high-resolution streamer data. This velocity model was used to apply a CMP stack and an amplitude-preserving Kirchhoff post-stack time migration. Processing of profiles p400-p500: Data were sampled at 0.5 ms and sorted into common midpoint (CMP) domain with a bin spacing of 5 m. Normal move out correction was carried out with a velocity of 1500 m s-1 and an Ormsby bandpass filter with corner frequencies at 40, 80, 600 and 1000 Hz was applied. The data were time migrated using the water velocity.

These data form the basis of an analysis of a prevalent research bias in the field of ocean acidification, notably the ignoring of natural fluctuations and gradients in the experimental design. The data are extracted from published work and own experiments.

Surface sediment samples representative for the tropical and subtropical South Atlantic (15°N to 40°S) were investigated by isothermal magnetic methods to delineate magnetic mineral distribution patterns and to identify their predominant Holocene climatic and oceanographic controls. Individual parameters reveal distinct, yet frequently overlapping, regional sedimentation characteristics. A probabilistic ('fuzzy c-means') cluster analysis was applied to five concentration independent magnetic properties assessing magnetite to hematite ratios and diagnostic of bulk and fine-particle magnetite grain size and coercivity spectra. The resultant 10 cluster structures establish an oceanwide magnetic sediment classification scheme tracing the major terrigenous eolian and fluvial fluxes, authigenic biogenic magnetite accumulation in high-productivity areas, transport by ocean current systems, and effects of bottom water velocity on depositional regimes. Distinct dissimilarities in magnetic mineral inventories between the eastern and western basins of the South Atlantic reflect prominent contrasts of both oceanic and continental influences.

Owing to limited knowledge of the habitat use and diet of juvenile Arctic charr from the High Arctic, particularly young-of-the-year (YOY), we assembled data obtained from samples taken in and around Lake Hazen, Nunavut, Canada, to assess juvenile habitat use and feeding. Juvenile charr demonstrated a preference for stream environments, particularly those fed by warm upstream ponds. Charr occupying both stream and nearshore lake habitats were found to feed similarly, with chironomids occurring most frequently in diets. Some older stream-dwelling charr preyed on smaller, younger Arctic charr. Preferred stream occupancy is likely mediated by physical barriers created mainly by water velocity, and by distance from the lake, lake-ice dynamics, low water depth, and turbidity. Water velocities resulted in stream habitat segregation by size, with YOY mainly found in low-velocity pools and back eddies adjacent to stream banks, but not in water velocities >0.1 m/s. Greatest charr densities in streams were found in small, shallow, slow-flowing side channels, which are highly susceptible to drought. Under predicted climate change scenarios, streams fed by small ponds will be susceptible to intermittent flow conditions, which could result in increased competition among juvenile charr for the remaining stream habitats. In addition, glacier-fed streams are likely to experience increased flow conditions that will exacerbate physical barriers created by water velocity and further reduce the availability of preferred stream habitat.
