Bottom morphology of the Jan Mayen transform fracture zone and rock chemistry data show that petrological and chemical specific features of igneous rocks can result from higher permeability of the transform fracture zone and deeper penetration of ocean water into the lithosphere in comparison with rift zones of the Kolbeinsey and Mohn's mid-ocean ridges. Age of alkaline magmatism of the Jan Mayen fracture zone is similar to that of rift zones due to palingenesis of metamorphosed and hydrated mantle and crustal rocks.

Geochemical behavior of Rb-Sr and K-Ar systems in Upper Vendian clayey rocks of the Russian Platform is under consideredation. The use of additional data on grain size fractions of sedimentary rocks recovered from boreholes drilled in the Gavrilov Yam area made it possible to confirm the previous conclusion on two stages of epigenetic matter transformation (approximately 600 and 400 Ma ago). Distortions are related to transformation of sediments due to interaction in the water-rock system. Interaction degree was more intense in the upper part of the sedimentary section relative to its lower strata. These conclusions are substantiated by materials from boreholes that characterize different types of Vendian sections and different tectonic zones.

Results of conventional K-Ar dating on five samples from two sites from the Izu-Bonin forearc are presented. Two samples recovered from a volcanic edifice and overlying sediments drilled on the western side of the forearc basin (Site 792) indicate a basement age of 34 Ma. This is consistent with early Oligocene biostratigraphic ages from the overlying sediments. Three samples from the basement of Hole 793B at the center of the basin are not analytically distinguishable, with a best age of 27.1 +/- 0.6 Ma. This is slightly younger than the 30-33 Ma biostratigraphic and magnetostratigraphic estimates from the overlying sediments, suggesting that alteration processes have lowered the apparent K-Ar ages. These ages suggest that syn-rift volcanism occurred in a forearc location during the middle Oligocene.
