Geochemical analyses of organic matter were carried out on Quaternary sediments from Sites 582 and 583 (Nankai Trough) and on Pliocene to Miocene sediments from Site 584 (Japan Trench), DSDP Leg 87, to evaluate petroleum-generating potential and to characterize the organic matter. The vitrinite-huminite reflectances of indigenous materials for these sites are less than 0.3% indicating the immature nature of the sediments. The sediments, however, contain remarkable amounts of recycled organic materials. The Quaternary sediments from Sites 582 and 583 contain small amounts of amorphous organic matter (less than 0.75 wt.% organic carbon and 66-90% amorphous debris), which is composed of predominantly recycled, oxidized, and over-matured (or matured) Type III material. The amount of hydrocarbon yield indicates that those sediments have lean-source potential for commercial hydrocarbon generation. The Pliocene to Miocene sediments from Site 584 contain organic matter (0.3-1.09 wt.% organic carbon) of predominantly amorphous debris (68-96%) that originated in two sources, an indigenous Type II material and a recycled, over-matured material. Pyrolysis shows an upward increase in the section of hydrocarbon yield and the same trend is also observed in organic-carbon content. The amount of the yield indicates that the Miocene sediments have lean-to-fair source potential and the Pliocene sediments have fair-to-good source potential.

Paleomagnetic measurements of sediment samples provide the magnetostratigraphy at Deep Sea Drilling Sites 582, 583, and 584 in the Nankai Trough and the Japan Trench. Drastic changes in the rate of sediment accumulation are documented by the magnetostratigraphic and biostratigraphic correlations. The changes in the accumulation rate correspond to the supply of sediments and variations in the accretionary process, which are directly related to the tectonic cycles in the geologic evolution of the Japanese island arc. Faults and folds within the drilled sedimentary sequences are oriented by paleomagnetic declination. Their directions and stress patterns are related to the relative plate motion along the trough and trench. The original remanent magnetization of the sediment was modified and remagnetized in the tectonic process of accretion by physical deformation, faulting, and intrusion of dewatering veinlets.

Two trenches off Japan were explored during DSDP Leg 87. One is the Nankai Trough and the other is the Japan Trench; Site 582 is located on the floor of the former and Site 584 is situated on the deep-sea terrace of the latter. Cores from Site 582 and 584 consist mainly of hemipelagic sediments and diatomaceous silts and mudstone, respectively. In this report we analyze the chemistry of the interstitial water and sediments, as well as the sediment mineralogy. Sulfate reduction is accompanied by the production of secondary pyrite, which is rich in the sediment at both sites. Dissolved Ca concentration is relatively low and changes only slightly at both sites, probably because of the formation of carbonate with high alkalinity. Concentrations of dissolved Mg decrease with depth at Site 584. The dissolved Mg depletion probably results from the formation of Mg-rich carbonate and/or ion exchange and reaction between interstitial water and clay minerals. Higher Si/Al values are due to biogenic opal in the sediments and roughly correlate with higher values of interstitial water SiO2. Increases in dissolved Li concentrations may be related to its release from clay minerals, to advection that results from dewatering, and/or to fluid transport.

The results of nine consolidation and permeability tests are presented for sediment samples from the Japan Trench and Nankai Trough sites of Leg 87. Coring and degassing disturbance results in an underconsolidated state for most Site 582 samples; however, the compressional effects of the subduction zone and high sediment accumulation rates may also play a role in causing underconsolidation. Samples collected at Site 583 exhibit similar evidence of disturbance but are slightly overconsolidated, confirming the possibility of sediment erosion at this site. The highly diatomaceous sediments at Site 584 are all overconsolidated, but the trend of overconsolidation decreases with depth. Disturbances of the diatom clay structure may increase the sediment compressibility and create this apparent overconsolidation
