Volcaniclastic rocks of Late Cretaceous age occur in four out of five sites (525, 527, 528, 529) drilled on the crest and the northwest flank of the Walvis Ridge during Leg 74. They are mostly interlayered with and overlie basement in the lowermost 10-100 m of the sedimentary section. Rocks from Holes 525A and 528 were studied megascopically and microscopically, by XRD, and XRF chemical analyses of whole-rock major and trace elements were undertaken. The dominant rock of Hole 528 volcaniclastics is a fine-grained (silt to fine sand), mostly matrix-bearing (partly matrix-rich) vitric "tuff," occurring as 5-110 cm thick, partly graded layers, some of which are distinctly bedded. Volcaniclastics of Hole 525A are generally richer in sanidine crystals. Most rocks contain some nonvolcanic clasts, chiefly foraminifers and lesser amounts of shallow-water fossil debris. Scoria shards, clasts of tachylite, and fine-grained basalts as well as chemical analyses suggest a basaltic to intermediate composition for most rocks of Hole 528, whereas volcaniclastics of Hole 525A are more silicic. The occurrence of tachylite and epiclastic, coarse-grained, basaltic clasts throughout the volcaniclastic sequence at Site 528 indicates shallow-water eruptions and perhaps even ocean island volcanism. The minor occurrence in Hole 528 of trachytic? pumice shards with phenocrysts of K-feldspar and the abundance of such shards in rocks from Hole 525A indicate Plinian eruptions characteristic of more mature stages of ocean island evolution. The sedimentary structures of volcaniclastic layers and their occurrence within deep sea calcareous oozes indicate a mass flow origin. Diagenetic alteration of the volcaniclastic rocks is pronounced, and four major stages of glass shard alteration are distinguished. Despite the effects of alteration and small-scale redistribution of elements and the admixture of nonvolcanic components, there were no drastic changes in the chemical composition of the rocks, except for pronounced increases in K and Rb and decreases in Ca and Fe. The basaltic volcaniclastic rocks very much resemble basement basalts in that they are moderately evolved tholeiites derived from an LIL-enriched mantle source with Zr/Nb ratios (Hole 528) of 5 to 6. This, in conjunction with the interbedding of volcaniclastic rocks and basement lavas, indicates contemporaneous seamount or island and basement volcanic activity involving magmas derived from similar sources.

Benthic forammifers in the size-fraction greater than 0.073 mm were studied in 88 Paleocene to Pleistocene samples from Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 525 (Hole 525A, Walvis Ridge, eastern south Atlantic). Clustering of the samples on the basis of the 86 most abundant foramimfers (in total, 331 taxa were identified) allowed separating two major assemblage zones: the Paleocene to Eocene interval, and the Oligocene to Pleistocene interval. Each of these, in turn, were subdivided into three minor subzones as follows: lower upper Paleocene (approx. 62.4 to 57 8 Ma); upper upper Paleocene (56.6 to 56 2 Ma), lower and middle Eocene (55.3 to 46 8 Ma); upper Oligocene to middle Miocene (25.3 to 16 Ma), middle Miocene to Pliocene (15.7 to 4.2 Ma), and lower Pleistocene (0.4 to 0.02 Ma), with only minor differences with the previous zone. Some very abundant taxa span most of the column studies (Bolivina huneri, Cassidulina subglobosa, Eponides bradyi, E. weddellensis, Gavelinella micra, Oridorsalis umbonatus, etc.). Several of the faunal breaks recorded coincide with conspicuous minima in the specific diversity curve, thus suggesting that the corresponding turnovers signal the final stages of periods of faunal impoverishment. At least one major bottomwater temperature drop (as derived from delta18O data) is synchronous with a decrease in the forammiferal specific diversity. On the other hand, a specific diversity maximum in the middle Miocene might be associated with a delta13C increase at approx 16 to 12 Ma. Highest foraminiferal abundances (up to 600-800 individuals per gram of dry sediment) occurred in the late Paleocene and in the early Pleistocene, in coincidence with the lowest diversity figures calculated. The magnitude of the most important faunal turnover recorded, between the middle Eocene and the late Oligocene, is magnified in our data set by the large hiatus which separates the middle Eocene from the upper Oligocene sediments. Considerably smaller overturns occurred within the late Paleocene (in coincidence with changes in the specific diversity, absolute abundance of forammiferal tests, and delta13C), and in the middle Miocene (in coincidence with a specific diversity maximum and a delta13C excursion). New reformation on the morphology and the stratigraphic ranges of several species is furnished. For all the taxa recorded the number of occurrences, total number of individuals identified and first and last appearances are listed.

Forty sediment and four basement basalt samples from DSDP Hole 525A, Leg 74, as well as nine basalt samples from southern and offshore Brazil, were subjected to instrumental neutron activation analysis. Thirty-two major, minor, and trace elements were determined. The downcore element concentration profiles and regression analyses show that the rare earth elements (REE) are present in significant amounts in both the carbonate and noncarbonate phases in sediments; Sr is concentrated in the carbonate phase, and most of the other elements determined exist mainly in the noncarbonate phase. The calculated partition coefficients of the REE between the carbonate phase and the free ion concentrations in seawater are high and increase with decreasing REE ionic radii from 3.9 x 10**6 for La to 15 x 10**6 for Lu. Calculations show that the lanthanide concentrations in South Atlantic seawater have not been changed significantly over the past 70 Ma. The Ce anomaly observed in the carbonate phase is a redox indicator of ancient seawater. Study of the Ce anomaly reveals that seawater was anoxic over the Walvis Ridge during the late Campanian. As the gap between South America and West Africa widened and the Walvis Ridge subsided from late Campanian to late Paleocene times, the water circulation of the South Atlantic improved and achieved oxidation conditions about 54 Ma that are similar to present seawater redox conditions in the world oceans. The chemical compositions of the basement rocks correspond to alkalic basalts, not mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs). The results add more evidence to support the hypothesis that the Walvis Ridge was formed by a series of volcanos moving over a "hot spot" near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. From the chemical composition and REE pattern, one 112 Ma old basalt on the Brazilian continental shelf has been identified as an early stage MORB. To date, this is the oldest oceanic tholeiite recovered from the South Atlantic. This direct evidence indicates that the continental split between South America and Africa commenced > 112 Ma.
