It has long been recognized that the transition from the last glacial to the present interglacial was punctuated by a brief and intense return to cold conditions. This extraordinary event, referred to by European palynologists as the Younger Dryas, was centered in the northern Atlantic basin. Evidence is accumulating that it may have been initiated and terminated by changes in the mode of operation of the northern Atlantic Ocean. Further, it appears that these mode changes may have been triggered by diversions of glacial meltwater between the Mississippi River and the St. Lawrence River drainage systems. We report here Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon results on two strategically located deep-sea cores. One provides a chronology for surface water temperatures in the northern Atlantic and the other for the meltwater discharge from the Mississippi River. Our objective in obtaining these results was to strengthen our ability to correlate the air temperature history for the northern Atlantic basin with the meltwater history for the Laurentian ice sheet.

Hydrocarbon seeps are ubiquitous at gas-prone Cenozoic deltas such as the Nile Deep Sea Fan (NDSF) where seepage into the bottom water has been observed at several mud volcanoes (MVs) including North Alex MV (NAMV). Here we investigated the sources of hydrocarbon gases and sedimentary organic matter together with biomarkers of microbial activity at four locations of NAMV to constrain how venting at the seafloor relates to the generation of hydrocarbon gases in deeper sediments. At the centre, high upward flux of hot (70 °C) hydrocarbon-rich fluids is indicated by an absence of biomarkers of Anaerobic Oxidation of Methane (AOM) and nearly constant methane (CH4) concentration depth-profile. The presence of lipids of incompatible thermal maturities points to mixing between early-mature petroleum and immature organic matter, indicating that shallow mud has been mobilized by the influx of deep-sourced hydrocarbon-rich fluids. Methane is enriched in the heavier isotopes, with values of d13C ~-46.6 per mil VPDB and dD ~-228 per mil VSMOW, and is associated with high amounts of heavier homologues (C2+) suggesting a co-genetic origin with the petroleum. On the contrary at the periphery, a lower but sustained CH4 flux is indicated by deeper sulphate-methane transition zones and the presence of 13C-depleted biomarkers of AOM, consistent with predominantly immature organic matter. Values of d13C-CH4 ~-60 per mil VPDB and decreased concentrations of 13C-enriched C2+ are typical of mixed microbial CH4 and biodegraded thermogenic gas from Plio-Pleistocene reservoirs of the region. The maturity of gas condensate migrated from pre-Miocene sources into Miocene reservoirs of the Western NDSF is higher than that of the gas vented at the centre of NAMV, supporting the hypothesis that it is rather released from the degradation of oil in Neogene reservoirs. Combined with the finding of hot pore water and petroleum at the centre, our results suggest that clay mineral dehydration of Neogene sediments, which takes place posterior to reservoir filling, may contribute to intense gas generation at high sedimentation rate deltas.

Geochemical investigation of 18 samples of sediments from Site 434 involved determining the content of organic carbon, of bitumoid A (The chloroform A-chl and alcohol-benzene A-alb extracts) and its various fractions, and of individual hydrocarbons as well as the structural group composition of resins. We identified certain samples that differed sharply from the rest by their increased bitumen content and relatively low molecular hydrocarbons and by the fact that their resinous components were more neutral and aliphatic in composition. The distribution of bitumoid and its components seems to reflect migration processes in operation during the early stages of the transformation of organic matter.

A detailed paleomagnetic study was carried out on biosiliceous and calcareous sediments drilled on Maud Rise, Antarctica, during ODP Leg 113. High-quality APC sections were retrieved in the upper 220 m of Holes 689B and 690B. Average deposition rates range from 3 to 15 m/m.y. A close (25 cm) paleomagnetic sample spacing provided a medium-resolution magnetostratigraphic sequence for the Paleogene and Neogene. Paleomagnetic samples were demagnetized stepwise by alternating fields, and characteristic remanent magnetization directions were derived from detailed vector and difference vector component analysis. A magnetochronologic framework has been established for the first time for the Southern Ocean sedimentary sequences spanning Paleocene to Oligocene and middle Miocene to early Pliocene times. Biosiliceous and calcareous microfossil stratigraphies were used to constrain magnetostratigraphic age assignments. Although average sedimentation rates were rather low, nearly complete sections of the geomagnetic polarity time scale (e.g., Chrons C5 and C5A) could be correlated with the inferred polarity pattern. Miocene and Pliocene records are marked by a high number of hiatuses mainly identified by diatom biostratigraphy. Good paleomagnetic correlation between the two holes is afforded in particular in the middle to upper Miocene. Oligocene magnetostratigraphy reveals a high-quality paleomagnetic record with a mostly complete Oligocene section in Hole 689B at ~5 m/m.y. deposition rate. Hole 690B exhibits higher deposition rates (7-12 m/m.y.), although two hiatuses are present. Early and late Eocene sedimentary sequences could be analyzed in both holes, but in Hole 689B middle Eocene chrons were disrupted by hiatuses and only incomplete polarity intervals C21 and C24 were encountered. Highest resolution (14 m/m.y.) was achieved in Hole 690B in a complete early Eocene and late Paleocene sequence from Chrons C23 to C26, with a number of short polarity intervals detected within Chrons C24 and C25.

Dust has the potential to modify global climate by influencing the radiative balance of the atmosphere and by supplying iron and other essential limiting micronutrients to the ocean (Martin et al., 1990, doi:10.1038/345156a0; Martin, 1990, doi:10.1029/PA005i001p00001). Indeed, dust supply to the Southern Ocean increases during ice ages, and 'iron fertilization' of the subantarctic zone may have contributed up to 40 parts per million by volume (p.p.m.v.) of the decrease (80-100 p.p.m.v.) in atmospheric carbon dioxide observed during late Pleistocene glacial cycles (Watson et al., 2000, doi:10.1038/35037561; Kohfeld et al., 2005, doi:10.1126/science.1105375; Martínez-Garcia et al., 2009, doi:10.1029/2008PA001657; Sigman et al., 2010, doi:10.1038/nature09149; Hain et al., 2010, doi:10.1029/2010gb003790). So far, however, the magnitude of Southern Ocean dust deposition in earlier times and its role in the development and evolution of Pleistocene glacial cycles have remained unclear. Here we report a high-resolution record of dust and iron supply to the Southern Ocean over the past four million years, derived from the analysis of marine sediments from ODP Site 1090, located in the Atlantic sector of the subantarctic zone. The close correspondence of our dust and iron deposition records with Antarctic ice core reconstructions of dust flux covering the past 800,000 years (Lambert et al., 2008, doi:10.1038/nature06763; Wolf et al., 2006, doi:10.1038/nature04614) indicates that both of these archives record large-scale deposition changes that should apply to most of the Southern Ocean, validating previous interpretations of the ice core data. The extension of the record beyond the interval covered by the Antarctic ice cores reveals that, in contrast to the relatively gradual intensification of glacial cycles over the past three million years, Southern Ocean dust and iron flux rose sharply at the Mid-Pleistocene climatic transition around 1.25 million years ago. This finding complements previous observations over late Pleistocene glacial cycles (Martínez-Garcia et al., 2009; Lambert et al., 2008; Wolff et al., 2006), providing new evidence of a tight connection between high dust input to the Southern Ocean and the emergence of the deep glaciations that characterize the past one million years of Earth history.

Distribution and composition of lipids and contents of alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) in bottom sediments of the Scotia and Weddell seas are discussed. Comparatively low concentrations of organic carbon (average 0.35%) and lipids (average 0.024%) result from rapid decomposition of organic matter in upper layers of the water column. Composition of alkanes indicates that lipids are of autochthonous origin, and stable concentrations of PAHs (average 25.8 ppb, sigma 15.3 ppb) indicate that they represent the background level for bottom sediments. Higher concentrations of PAHs in sediments near the King George Island (252.1 ppb) and different distributions of individual polyarenes are produced there by the heating systems of the Polish Antarctic Station.

Lipid components of hydrothermal deposits from the unusual field at 14°45'N MAR and from the typical field at 29°N MAR were studied. For the first time mixed nature of organic matter (OM) from hydrothermal sulfide deposits was established with use of biochemical, gas chromatographic, and molecular methods of studies. In composition of OM lipids of phytoplankton, those of chemosynthesis bacteria and non-biogenic synthesis lipids were determined. Specific conditions of localization of sulfide deposits originated from ''black smokers'' (reducing conditions, absence of free oxygen, presence of reduced sulfur preventing OM from decomposition) let biogenic material, including bacterial one, be preserved in sulfide deposits. The hydrothermal system at 14°45'N MAR is characterized by geological, geochemical and thermodynamic conditions allowing abiogenic synthesis of methane and petroleum hydrocarbons. For sulfide deposits at 29°N and other active hydrothermal fields known at MAR, abiogenic synthesis of hydrocarbons occurs in lower scales.

Analysis of molecular composition of alkanes in bottom sediments of the southern part of Dvina Bay (White Sea) in October 2001 revealed the following main peculiarities of hydrocarbon behavior in the estuary: dominating of high molecular C23-C45 compounds and irregular distribution of hydrocarbons in bottom sediments as a result of high sedimentation rate and active hydrodynamics in the studied area.

Here we use compound-specific hydrogen isotope data of aquatic and terrestrial lipid biomarkers from precisely dated annually laminated sediments from Lake Meerfelder Maar (MFM) in Western Germany to reconstruct decadal resolved hydroclimatic changes during the Younger Dryas. We show that cooling at MFM begun synchronous to the onset of cooling in Greenland at 12.850 years BP. Major environmental changes at MFM however took place 170 years later as a result of substantially drier conditions.
