Some of Connecticut's salt marshes are experiencing unprecedented sudden vegetation dieback, leaving bare mud where Spartina grass used to grow. In a Sea Grant project, Dr. Wade Elmer has investigated possible causes.

Beth Owen is just one of many Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies graduate students and alumni to participate in an independent research project through the support of Connecticut Sea Grant. The internships have been as ambitious as they are diverse, and all have given participants a new perspective on the role of research in their future. The program is based at Yale’s Center for Coastal and Watershed Systems. Beth sampled and analyzed sediments for heavy metals from the lower Quinnipiac River.

Its unique tidal marshes, ecology, geology, scenic areas, and fascinating history make the Connecticut River a treasure to residents and visitors alike. It is one of the 1,713 “Wetlands of International Importance” designated throughout the world by the International Ramsar Convention. This photo essay also describes the education efforts underway by Connecticut Sea Grant and its partners to assist educators with resource materials.
