The current studies were undertaken to examine the effect of retinoic acid (RA)-induced differentiation of the murine embryonal carcinoma cell line, F-9, on the glycosylation of specific cellular glycoproteins and on the expression of two members of the family of endogenous lactoside-binding lectins. It was found that RA-induced differentiation of these cells into cells with the properties of primitive endoderm results in the increased fucosylation of 3 glycoproteins with molecular weights of 175 (gp175), 250 (gp250), and 400 (pg400) kDa. These three fucose-containing glycoproteins can be considered as new markers of differentiation in this system. The increased fucosylation of these glycoproteins preceded the 3-fold increase in fucosyltransferase (FT) activity that was seen upon RA-induced differentiation of these cells, indicating that an increase in fucosyltransferase activity alone cannot explain the increased fucosylation of these glycoproteins.^ The effect of RA and Ch55, a chalcone carboxylic acid with retinoid-like properties, induced differentiation of a variety of murine embryonal carcinoma cell lines on the activities of both FT and sialyltransferase (ST) was examined. The effect of differentiation on the activities of both glycosyltransferases was modulated and most probably is dependent upon the differentiation pathway that is triggered by the retinoids for each of the embryonal carcinoma cell lines.^ Two glycoproteins, Lysosomal Associated Membrane Glycoproteins 1 and 2 (LAMP-1 and LAMP-2) were examined in more detail during the course of RA-induced differentiation of F-9 cells. Both the levels and glycosylation of both glycoproteins are increased following differentiation of these cells. Differentiation results in the increased binding of $\sp{125}$l-labelled L-phytohemagglutinin to bind to LAMP-1 which indicates increased GlcNAc $\beta$1,6 branching of the oligosaccharide side chains.^ We found that RA-induced differentiation of F-9 cells results in the decreased expression of the 34 kDa lectin 24 h after addition of the retinoid to the medium. Additionally, 48 h of RA-treatment results in the increased expression of the 14.5 kDa lectin. By indirect immunofluorescence we were able to colocalize the 14.5 kDa lectin and laminin which suggests that laminin may be a ligand for the lectin in the F-9 cells. Background. Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is the most common chronic infectious disease of childhood worldwide. Seven of ten American children have one or more decayed or filled primary teeth by age five. ECC prevalence is especially high in lower socio-economic ethnic populations. Commonly recognized as a diet-induced disease, focal etiological factors include cariogenic bacteria, fermentable carbohydrates, and a susceptible newly erupted tooth. Sequencing of breast and/or bottle feeding and introduction of beikost come at a time when children's defense mechanisms and, perhaps maternal direction of children's dietary patterns, are not yet fully developed or mature. To date, most research has examined biological factors, while maternal factors, especially psychosocial ones, have received scant attention. Objective. To examine the association of psychosocial factors in terms of maternal nutrition and oral health knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs, as well as social support and self-efficacy (KABS2) in a population of socio-economically disadvantaged infants and young children. A secondary aim was to describe ECC prevalence in this population. Methods. This study examined cross-sectionally the relationship between selected maternal psychosocial variables and ECC in a convenience sample of Mexican-American women and very young children participating in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) in San Antonio, Texas. Mothers were surveyed by use of a criteria- and content-valid, reliable questionnaire, and dental examinations were conducted on 191 children, aged 5 to 47 months old. Results. Thirty-nine percent of the children had ECC. As assessed on a 30-question scale, women in whose children were diagnosed with ECC were found to demonstrate lower Knowledge ( p=0.03), Attitudes (p=0.02), Beliefs (p=0.04), and Social Support (p<0.01) scores, compared to women whose children were found to be caries-free. No differences in Self-Efficacy scores were found between the groups. Conclusions. These data indicate that current etiological model depicting relevant factors associated with ECC in Mexican-American infants and children of low socio-economic status should be broadened to include consideration of maternal psychosocial factors such as nutrition and oral health knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and social support, and that these factors should be considered when planning educational approaches to reduce the occurrence of ECC. ^

This study examined the cross-sectional associations between blood pressure, hypertension and dietary factors among 580 Mexican-American adults residing in Starr County, Texas. The data were collected as part of Gallbladder Disease Study between April, 1985 and December, 1986.^ Dietary intake was assessed for the month previous to the interview by means of a 38 food item quantified frequency questionnaire representing foods and mixed dishes commonly consumed in the community. From the dietary information intake of calcium, cholesterol, total kilocalories, and percent of kilocalories contributed by total fat, saturated fat, monounsaturated fatty acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, protein, carbohydrates were calculated. The effect of other factors associated with blood pressure, such as age, body mass index, body fat distribution, smoking, and drinking were controlled.^ Age was the most important predictor of both systolic and diastolic blood pressure and hypertension. For both males and females, systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels were consistently positively associated with body mass index but were not associated with waist hip ratio. However, a strong positive relationship between hypertension and waist hip ratio but not body mass index was observed.^ After controlling for age and body mass index it was noted that for males there were no significant associations between the dietary variables and systolic blood pressure. For diastolic blood pressure there were significant associations with percent fat, percent monounsaturated fatty acids, percent protein and percent carbohydrates.^ For females, there were significant associations between systolic blood pressure and percent protein, percent carbohydrates and cholesterol. There were no significant associations between dietary variables and diastolic blood pressure.^ After controlling for age and waist hip ratio significant associations between hypertension and percent fat, percent saturated fat, percent monounsaturated fatty acids, percent carbohydrate and percent protein were observed in males. Significant associations between hypertension and percent polyunsaturated fatty acids and percent protein were noted in females. ^

Introduction. Food frequency questionnaires (FFQ) are used study the association between dietary intake and disease. An instructional video may potentially offer a low cost, practical method of dietary assessment training for participants thereby reducing recall bias in FFQs. There is little evidence in the literature of the effect of using instructional videos on FFQ-based intake. Objective. This analysis compared the reported energy and macronutrient intake of two groups that were randomized either to watch an instructional video before completing an FFQ or to view the same instructional video after completing the same FFQ. Methods. In the parent study, a diverse group of students, faculty and staff from Houston Community College were randomized to two groups, stratified by ethnicity, and completed an FFQ. The "video before" group watched an instructional video about completing the FFQ prior to answering the FFQ. The "video after" group watched the instructional video after completing the FFQ. The two groups were compared on mean daily energy (Kcal/day), fat (g/day), protein (g/day), carbohydrate (g/day) and fiber (g/day) intakes using descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA. Demographic, height, and weight information was collected. Dietary intakes were adjusted for total energy intake before the comparative analysis. BMI and age were ruled out as potential confounders. Results. There were no significant differences between the two groups in mean daily dietary intakes of energy, total fat, protein, carbohydrates and fiber. However, a pattern of higher energy intake and lower fiber intake was reported in the group that viewed the instructional video before completing the FFQ compared to those who viewed the video after. Discussion. Analysis of the difference between reported intake of energy and macronutrients showed an overall pattern, albeit not statistically significant, of higher intake in the video before versus the video after group. Application of instructional videos for dietary assessment may require further research to address the validity of reported dietary intakes in those who are randomized to watch an instructional video before reporting diet compared to a control groups that does not view a video.^
