Library Assessment Trends Report, 2010–2011

The field of library assessment continues to grow. The annual Library Assessment Trends Report provides a brief synopsis of the more important trends in library assessment. It is hoped these brief reports will facilitate the Dean of the Library’s understanding of assessment trends. These reports provide information that supports data driven decisions. Additionally, the reports are an outreach method that supports a greater institutional understanding of library assessment. Library assessment supports strategic planning, improved processes, and a greater understanding of our users’ needs.

The Influence of MGA and PG600 on the Out of Season Reproductive Performance of Ewes

Seasonal lamb supply has been established as one of the major hindrances to the American sheep industry. The ability to consistently lamb ewes on an accelerated production system offers additional benefits of reduced maintenance costs, more uniform cash flow along with reduced labor and facility demands. Previous work at McNay with spring breeding indicated that light priming rams regardless of genetic base improved conception rates, however, MGA feeding postweaning gave inconsistent and sometimes depressed reproductive activity in ewes. This study was conducted to evaluate the use of MGA in late lactation and a single PG600 injection at weaning, either individually or in combination.

Use of Ultrasound Backfat Estimates to Form Marketing Groups Prior to Finishing for Feedlot Steers

An experiment was conducted using 95 Continental crossbred steers. The cattle were sorted by ultrasound 160 days before slaughter into a low backfat group (Low BF) and a higher backfat group (High BF). Half of the Low BF and half of the High BF were implanted whereas the other halves were not. Data from the experiment were used in two hypothetical markets. One market was a high yield beef program (HY) that did not allow the use of implants. The second market was a commodity beef program (CM) that allowed the use of implants. The cattle were priced as an unsorted group (ALL) and two sorted groups (Low BF and High BF) within the HY (non-implanted) and CM (implanted) markets. The CM program had a base price of $1.05/lb hot carcass weight (HCW) with a $0.15/lb HCW discount for quality grade (QG) Select and a $0.20/lb HCW discount for yield grade (YG) 4. The HY program used a base price of $1.07/lb HCW with premiums ($/lb HCW) paid for YG £ .9 (.15), 1.0 - 1.4 (.10), and 1.5 - 1.9 (.03). The carcasses were discounted ($/lb HCW) for YG 2.5 - 2.9 (.03), 3.0 - 3.9 (.15), and ³ 4.0 (.35). This data set provides good evidence that the end point at which to sell a group of cattle depends on the particular market. Sorting had an economic advantage over ALL in the HY Low BF and the CM High BF groups. The HY High BF cattle should have been sold sooner due to the discounts recieved for increased YG. The increased YG was directly affected by an increase in BF. Furthermore, the CM Low BF group should have been fed longer to increase the number of carcasses grading Choice.

ISU ADVANCE Annual Report, Year 2: June 2008

The goal of the ISU ADVANCE program is to investigate the effectiveness of a multilevel collaborative effort to produce institutional transformation that results in the full participation of women faculty in science, technology, engineering and math fields in the university. Our approach focuses on transforming departmental cultures (views, attitudes, norms and shared beliefs), practices (what people say and do), and structures (physical and social arrangements), as well as university policies, through active participation of individuals at all levels of the university.

Taking the Law into Your Own Hands: Establishing an In-house Book Repair Program

Law collections pose some unique problems in terms of their physical care due to filing and updating practices, use patterns and special binding structures such as loose-leafs and pocket parts. This workshop is designed to address specific preservation needs of law collections through lecture, demonstration and hands-on opportunities. Participants will learn the fundamentals of book repair, treatment options and decision-making, and preservation best practices. Emphasis will be placed on moving knowledge into practice through guidelines for establishing institution-appropriate in house book repair programs, by training the trainers in basic book repair techniques and providing all participants with a start-up tool kit.

Second Annual Kansas State–Nebraska Biochemical Engineering Symposium (April 29, 1972)

This booklet contains abstracts of papers presented at a biochemical engineering symposium conducted at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on April 29, 1972. This was the second annual symposium on this subject, the first having been held at Kansas State University on June 4, 1971. The 1960s: A Bibliography

The time period covered by this bibliography is circa 1960 to 1974, an unusual "decade," to be sure. But because the Civil Rights movements and Watergate framed this era, it became impossible to compile a bibliography on the 1960s without entering the 1970s. The Vietnam War did not end until 1975, which would seem a logical place to end the decade. However, Nixon's resignation sparked more public interest and energy than did the anti-climax of the end of the war. Thus, the time period covered. Although there are some key books on the Civil Rights Movement, which started in the late 1950s, that movement has been adequately covered in other resources.

Apparatus for threshing grain

This invention relates generally to grain threshing apparatus and in particular to an apparatus for threshing grain wherein an impeller is rotatable within a concave or tubular screen. This application is a division of application Serial No. 560,552, now Patent No. 2,906,270. An object of this invention is to provide an improved apparatus for threshing grain.

Illustrated Botanical Books, Fifteenth, Sixteenth, Seventeenth Centuries

No attempt has been made for a comprehensive coverage of the many outstanding illustrated botanical books for this three hundred year period. Rather the aim has been for a combination of interesting illustrators and famous botanists. Like the exhibit on fine bird books, these books on display have been taken from the Rare Books division of Special Collections.

Comparison of Organic and Conventional Crops at the Neely-Kinyon Long-term Agroecological Research Site

The Neely-Kinyon Long-term Agroecological Research (LTAR) site was established in 1998 to study the long-term effects of organic production in Iowa. Treatments at the LTAR site, replicated four times in a completely randomized design, include the following rotations: conventional Corn-Soybean (C-S), organic Corn-Soybean-Oats/Alfalfa (C-SO/A), organic Corn-Soybean-Oats/AlfalfaAlfalfa (C-S-O/A-A) and Corn-SoybeanCorn-Oats/Alfalfa (C-SB-C-O/A). On April 13, 2011, Badger oats were underseeded with BR Goldfinch alfalfa at a rate of 90 lb/acre and 15 lb/acre, respectively. Following harvest of the organic corn plots in 2010, winter rye was no-till drilled at a rate of 75 lb/acre on October 20, 2010.
