It is known that the electrical resistance of annealed metals is usually smaller than that of metals in their cold worked state. The curve showing the relation between electrical resistance and annealing temperature reaches a minimum; continued annealing at higher temperature produces an increase in the electrical resistance. In the case of alloys it has been noted that a second decrease occurs at higher annealing temperature. The following work corroborates the observance of previous investigations. The electrical resistance of cold worked copper, gold, nickel, and iron decreased with annealing and then increased, the minimum being around 300° C. or 400° C. Monel metal showed a minimum resistance followed by an increase which in turn was followed by a second decrease.

The purpose or this investigation is primarily to determine the best conditions for plating chromium on aluminum. The work was carried out with the hope of obtaining coherent deposits, and of determining the conditions under which such deposits may be duplicated.

Many investigations have shown that the electrical resistance of soft annealed metals is usually smaller than that of metals in their hard, cold worked state. By annealing cold-worked metals, the electrical resistance decreases to a minimum and then increases upon continued annealing at higher temperatures. The work performed in this investigation upon silver, aluminum, copper, nickel, and soft steel corroborates this idea.

It has been proven that cadmium forms a very satisfactory plate on steel, which has to withstand severe corrosion, especially the corrosion of sea water and spray. The metal is now successfully plated electrolytically from cyanide solutions, but wherever work is carried on with cyanide, there is great danger of poisoning to the workers.

Part I What makes science hard for newcomers? 1) The background (briefly) of my research - (why the math anxiety model doesn’t fit) 2) The Tier analysis (a visual) – message: there are many types of science learners in your class than simply younger versions of yourself 3) Three approaches (bio, chem, physics) but only one Nature 4) The (different) vocabularies of the three Sciences 5) How mathematics is variously used in Science Part II Rules and rules-driven assignments- lQ vs OQ1) How to incorporate creativity into assignments and tests? 2) Tests- borrowing “thought questions" from other fields (If Columbus hadn't discovered the new World, when and under whose law would it have been discovered?) 3) Grading practices (partial credit, post-exam credit for finding and explaining nontrivial errors 4) Icing on the cake – applications, examples of science/engineering from Tuesdays NY Times Part III Making Change at the Departmental Level 1) Taking control of at least some portion of the curriculum 2) Varying style of presentation 3) Taking control of at least some portion of the exams 4) GRADING pros and cons of grading on a curve 5) Updating labs and lab reporting.

The enormous number of previous experiments and researches for the improvement of the commercial chromic acid bath, did not succeed even in the partial elimination of any one of the disadvantages of chromic acid bath. This led the author to believe that the poor performance is an inherent quality of the chromic acid bath, and is due to the fact that the deposition occurs from the higher state of oxidation.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are promising devices for stationary and portable power and heat generation, because they can use complex fuels such as hydro-carbons, CO, and alcohols. Extreme, non-equilibrium conditions and high tem-peratures (≥ 700 ˚C) required for SOFC operation hamper efforts to understand the mechanisms of component degradation in SOFCs. This talk focuses on new insights into SOFC chemistry and the conversion of carbon-containing fuels (both hydrocarbons and oxygenated) into electricity, carbon dioxide and water, gleaned from a combination of techniques including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, voltammetry, and vibrational Raman scattering.
