MT Hard Water of Montana Tech of the University of Montana submits Task 3: Treatment Technology Validation for Water Softening Technology as an entry into the 2012 WERC Environmental Design Contest. Currently, there are several commercially available technologies that treat water hardness. The objective of this project is to develop a strategy to evaluate and validate different water hardness treatment technologies. MT Hard Water (MTHW) has studied several technologies including: electromagnetic water treatment, ion exchange, and reverse osmosis. For validation purposes, an electromagnetic water treatment system (ScaleRID) was selected according to the WERC task description.

Research has been undertaken both under Government and private auspices in an endeavor to develop uses for bentonite. Perhaps, the work done to date has had only in consideration the possible industrial importance of bentonite. No simple, quick methods for the determination of the properties or qualities of any particular bentonite have been developed. In an attempt to establish whether or not there is a means of making rapid simple determinations of the quality of Montana bentonitic clays, and in particular, with regard to the uses to which the clays may be suited. The problem also involves a study of Montana bentonite, and a comparison of it with the standard accepted bentonites and fullers earth on the market today.

The increase in hardness is attributed to the manganese silicide being precipitated from solid solution and deposited between crystal planes. The subsequent softening which occurs on prolonging the period of reheating is believed to be due to an agglomeration of the dispersed hardening agent.

Warnings are used to inform users of hazards that may be associated with many products. Often these warnings deal with the operation of tools, appliances, and other items for which the user may have some reason at least, to look for information on the product regarding its use. Plastic film presents a serious hazard to young children. Because the film will adhere to the flesh, if it covers the airways for the child, suffocation may result. Because young children may play with them, it is important that such films be kept away from them. Warnings need to be adequate to inform or remind caregivers of this fact. This study examined warnings found on various items in commerce and some alternatives to those warnings. The results showed some warnings to be poor at best. The alternative most preferred included both the prohibition sign and a symbolic indication of proper disposal.
