Permability and Porosity of Devonian Dolomites in Northwestern Montana

The purpose of this investigation is to record data per­taining to porosity and permeability derived from physical tests performed on Devonian dolomites occurring in northwestern Montana, and to subsequently summarize the results obtained as an aid in determining the possibility of those dolomites being suitable reservoir rocks for oil and gas accumulation.

General Geology and Mines of Northwestern Montana

The five counties discussed in this paper compose the northernmost and westernmost counties in Montana. On the eastern boundary are Glacier National Park and the Continental Divide; on the southern boundary are Missoula and Powell counties; Idaho lies on the southwestern and western side; and the Canadian border lies along the northern edge. The region is on the Pacific Ocean side of the Rocky Mountains. Three major rivers, the Clark Fork, the Flathead, and the Kootenai drain this area into the Columbia River.

The Physiographic History of Western Montana and Northwestern Idaho

Millions of years of physiographic changes have conditioned us to the fact that our present drainage is a temporary feature. Rivers once flowing opposite to their present direction is not an unusual condition for physiographers to suggest.

A Geological Report on Several Localities in the Northwestern Tobacco Root Mountains

To better acquaint seniors in Geology and mining with actual field practice, the Montana School of Mines offer a course in Geologic Field Mapping, during the three weeks preceding the opening of the fall semester. The first two weeks are spent in actual field mapping of the geologic formations near Whitehall, Montana, while the third week is spent back on the campus compiling data and finishing maps started in the field.
