Two sets of weld-test coupons, supposedly made under identical conditions, were submitted to this institution last year for approval and certification under the A.S.M.E. Welder's Qualification Code. Although there is no standardized list of alloys, most investigators have, to avoid confusion, concurred in at least grouping the metals under several general heads. Precious metals: gold, silver and the platinum group; the light metals: aluminum and magnesium; the non-ferrous metals (excluding all steels and iron-base alloys); and the antifriction metals.

The manufacture and application of metal powders is now beginning to take a position as a recognized part of the science of metallurgy.

A large percentage of all commercial production at present is based upon past practice rather than upon scientific knowledge.
