Montana's oil and gas industries aggregate a gross income of over 12,000,000 annually to the state. Oil and gas fields have been thoroughly discussed in literature as to geology, location, production and future possibilities. The specific object of this report has been to compile a comprehensive study of the production methods as they occur.

The purpose of this investigation was to attempt to find some means of increasing the effective porosity and permeability of the producing sands of the Cut Bank Oil Field, with the hope that thereby the ultimate recovery of petroleum from this field may be increased. Although the percentage increase in production thus effected would undoubtedly be small, it would represent a substantial volume of petroleum in view of the great quantity of oil and gas present in this field.

The Big Sky Carbon Sequestration Partnership examines the ability of geologic systems to safely trap anthropogenic carbon dioxide to mitigate its impact on climate. One such system is the Duperow Formation within Kevin Dome, a large sedimentary trap and cap structure that has a long history of oil and gas production. To test storage potential of the dome, naturally trapped carbon dioxide is extracted, compressed, and reinjected. Geophysical methods and monitoring wells provide evidence of the fate and transport of the re-injected carbon dioxide. This study and others like it demonstrate the efficacy carbon sequestration at an industrial scale.

In studying the Cut Bank field and its numerous wells, it is found that dry holes are surrounded by producing wells, and also that the field as a whole is very irregular; water, oil, and gas zones in many cases following no definite pattern. In some instances, this phenomenon may be due to the lensing and thinning of the producing sands, but it is evident that this is not the only factor. Therefore, the controlling factors must be porosity and permeability.

The purpose of this investigation is to record data pertaining to porosity and permeability derived from physical tests performed on Devonian dolomites occurring in northwestern Montana, and to subsequently summarize the results obtained as an aid in determining the possibility of those dolomites being suitable reservoir rocks for oil and gas accumulation.

Oil and gas have been found in the Triassic strata of Wyoming. Although the Triassic has not as yet proven to be a large producing horizon it is very probable that additional oil will be found in Triassic strata in the future, and it is one of the goals at which oil well drillers aim their tools.
