An Investigation into the Recovery of Indium from Fume Residue

Several months were required to produce a single gram of indium. Consequently, the industrial history of the metal is extremely short. In view of the unique properties that indium has demonstrated in this short period, it is probable that indium is still in its early stage of development. However, the commer­cial applications of the metal are well established and indium is now produced on a commercial scale. It is obtainable as the metal or in solution for electroplat­ing.

The wartime demand for fluorspar has caused renewed interest in fluorite deposits. Near Silver Bow, Montana, a deposit of massive, coarsely crystalline fluorspar, which has not been described in the literature, has attracted the atten­tion of the United States Geological Survey.

Geology and Mines of the Upper Blackfoot Valley, Montana

The purchase and continued operation of the Mike Horse mine in the Heddleston district, by the American Smelting and Re­fining Company, gives the Blackfoot Valley a renewed promise of a prosperous future in its role as a mining district. In the past, large amounts of placer gold were recovered from the gulches of the area, however, because of the transporta­tion facilities, only the upper portions of a few lodes were exploited by the early miners.

Roasting and Leaching of Montana Chromite

The United States, although the leading consumer of chromite, depends almost entirely on imports for its supply. Domestic production of chromite is limited, because high-grade imported ore is plentiful and inexpensive in normal times. There are several large deposits of chromite in the United States, representing millions of tons of low grade ore. These deposits form a strategic reserve that must be used in time of national emergency.

Concentration of Manganese Dioxide from Philipsburg, Montana

Imports of manganese ore probably supply a major proportion of the needs of the United States. Domestic production is reported to be higher than pre-war levels, but does not equal that of the peak production year of 1943. In 1946, the Anaconda Copper Mining Company ac­counted for 90 percent of the total shipments of mangan­ese nodules, and this company is the largest producer of domestic metallurgical ore in the United States.

Separation of Cadmium from Zinc in the Purification Step of the Leaching Cycle

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the effect of the factors listed previously by conducting a series of tests that will indicate the ex­tent to which the purification is influenced by time, temperature, zinc oust size, zinc dust quantity, iron concentration, two stage precipitation, and aeration.
