The General Geology of the Cardwell Mining District

The Cardwell Mining District is part of the greater Whitehall Mining District. The district is situated about four miles to the east and northeast of Whitehall in the southern end of the Bull Mountains which are near the Continental Divide. The first reported production was in 1896 after the dis­covery of the Mayflower Mine. Mining has been carried on in­termittently and on a small scale since that time.

The Electrodeposition of Manganese from Certain Aqueous Solutions

Careful examination of the literature available shows that the electrodeposition of manganese from various aqueous solutions has not been attempted to any great extent. The best method for the electrodeposition of pure manganese consists in the electrolysis of a solution con­taining manganous and ammonium sulphates.

The Staining Effect of the Hydrochloric Acid-Chromate Trioxide Solution on the Minerals of the Chalcocite-Stibnite-Galena Ternary System.

The object of this work has been to devise a method by which the different phases in the chalcocite-stibnite-galena ternary system may be identified. As the mineralogists have no precise methods for the identification of these phases, a hydrochloric acid-chromate trioxide staining solution was employed.

The Geology of Lost Creek Canyon with Special Reference to Igneous Activity

This investigation was undertaken primarily as a problem in geologic mapping, coupled with a study of stratigraphy, glaciation, igneous phenomena, and structure. The area is admirably suited to a study of geology and geologic events. Because it is small in extent, the area was studied in some detail during the time which was devoted to field work. The record of igneous activity of past geological ages is re­markably well exposed, since Lost Creek Canyon was carved through the roof of a stock or batholith by the glaciers of the Pleistocene epoch.

Computational and Biochemical Approaches to Molecular Epidemiology

Mining activity in Butte, Montana has taken place, or continues to take place, within the urban residence of Butte itself. This has led to urban areas with high concentrations of toxic metals such as arsenic, lead, copper, zinc, mercury and cadmium. Advances in protein study and gene sequencing has opened the possibility of finding molecular biomarkers whose presence, absence or morphological changes could indicate disease processes in populations exposed to environmental toxins. While in principle, biomarkers can be any chemicals or metabolites, as well as proteins and genes that are indicative of exposure to xenobiotics, this study seeks to identify changes in cellular pathways that suggest chronic (or acute) exposure to low-levels of metals associated with historical mining activities on the Butte Hill that could cause oxidative stress or other stress to the cell.

Organic Wastewater Chemicals in Silver Bow Creek - Butte to Warm Springs Ponds

The purpose of this study is to detail and analyze the distribution, concentration, and loads of 5 organic compounds along Silver Bow Creek in Butte, Montana from the Municipal Wastewater treatment plant to the Warm Springs Ponds. The chemicals analyzed include Carbamazepine (pharmaceutical), Miconazole (fungicide) and three antibiotics – Sulfamethoxazole, Thiabendazole, and Ciprofloxacin. This project begins a 2 year study to analyze 6 additional compounds (11 compounds total), to develop an effective method to detail and analyze OWCs using Mass Spectrometer/Liquid chromatography system, and to aid in assessment of aquatic health and ongoing restoration work. Contact Metamorphism in the Highlands

On the southern margin of the Boulder Batholith, about twenty miles south of Butte in the Highland Mountains, there are many miles of contact between the igneous and sedi­mentary rocks. As two kinds of igneous rocks and many diff­erent kinds of sedimentary rock are present, it is an excell­ent place for the study of contact metamorphism.

A Study of the Effect of Oxygen on the Rate of Dissolution of Gold in Cyanide Solutions.

The accepted chemical reactions in the dissolution of gold by cyanide solutions require the presence of gold, cyanide, water, and oxygen. The importance of dissolved oxygen in cyanide solutions as a factor is recognized by those familiar with cyanidation. Manufacturers of cyanidation equipment realize the necessity of oxygen, as shown by the appliances they have developed which are attached to the agitators in order to saturate the cyanide solutions with air.

The Extraction of Manganese from Manganese Flue Dust.

It is estimated that 90 to 95% of the world’s consumption of manganese is used in the steel industry in the form of either ferromanganese or spiegeleisen. The remainder is used in the form of either salts or oxides, chloride, dioxide and monoxide.
