In 1939 the total world production of crude chromite was approximately 1,167,000 metric tons; of which the United States produced only 3,672 metric tons and imported over 317,500 metric tons. Imports came mostly from the Philippine Islands, Cuba, South Africa, and Rhodesia.

During the course of this investigation of the ores of the Big Seven mine, Neihart, Montana, the writer has attempted, through a microscopic study of polished sections, to ascertain the hypogene or supergene character of the ore minerals present in the ore suite.

The Red Lodge and Silver Star chromite deposits of Montana have stimulated much interest during periods of war. The Red Lodge deposit is 25 miles southwest of Red Lodge which is also the nearest railroad point. Several workings are scattered throughout the area, exposing lense-like ore bodies averaging 33% chrome oxide. Silver Star is a much smaller deposit 5 miles west of Silver Star, Montana, which is its nearest railroad point. Lenses of chromite are exposed by pits and trenches, which average approximately 36% chromic oxide.

With an eye to the future development of its resources, the large deposits of low-grade manganese ore within Montana's boundaries show great promise of developing an important industry. With the present war demands and the possibility of a future market it is essential that work expended to utilize this important mineral.

With the increasing importance of manganese in the metallurgical fields of today and tomorrow, extensive work along the lines of its successful exploitation has been accomplished by many investigators. Since tie current world situation has shut off most of our supply of high-grade manganese ores from foreign sources, the low-grade domestic deposits have entered the fields of investigation very rapidly.

Several months were required to produce a single gram of indium. Consequently, the industrial history of the metal is extremely short. In view of the unique properties that indium has demonstrated in this short period, it is probable that indium is still in its early stage of development. However, the commercial applications of the metal are well established and indium is now produced on a commercial scale. It is obtainable as the metal or in solution for electroplating.

The most important element in the alloying of steels, has also been used quite extensively as a third constituent in copper-zinc alloys. The chief characteristics of nickel which make it desirable as an alloying element are its toughness, high strength, and resistance to corrosion.

Magnesium and magnesium alloys are becoming more and more important in modern industry. Their use in the aviation industry has been greatly curtailed because of their comparatively poor resistance to corrosion especially in moist atmospheres. Many methods have been adopted to improve their resistance to corrosion.

Coal was first mined in Montana in the year 1880. For the last thirty years the mining of coal in this state has been very important-with few people realizing its value. In the mineral industry, the value of the annual production of coal is exceeded by none of the non-metallics, and only by gold, silver, and copper in the metallics. At the present time the coal production of Montana is valued at about 41000,000.00 annually.

In studying the Cut Bank field and its numerous wells, it is found that dry holes are surrounded by producing wells, and also that the field as a whole is very irregular; water, oil, and gas zones in many cases following no definite pattern. In some instances, this phenomenon may be due to the lensing and thinning of the producing sands, but it is evident that this is not the only factor. Therefore, the controlling factors must be porosity and permeability.

Spectrographic analysis of limestones as a possible method of correlation of geologic formations is an altogether new line of investigation. As far as known the only previous work consists of a few analyses made by Fred Lines in his bachelor thesis work at Montana School of mines in the spring of 1942.
