Understanding how a living cell behaves has become a very important topic in today’s research field. Hence, different sensors and testing devices have been designed to test the mechanical properties of these living cells. This thesis presents a method of micro-fabricating a bio-MEMS based force sensor which is used to measure the force response of living cells. Initially, the basic concepts of MEMS have been discussed and the different micro-fabrication techniques used to manufacture various MEMS devices have been described. There have been many MEMS based devices manufactured and employed for testing many nano-materials and bio-materials. Each of the MEMS based devices described in this thesis use a novel concept of testing the specimens. The different specimens tested are nano-tubes, nano-wires, thin film membranes and biological living cells. Hence, these different devices used for material testing and cell mechanics have been explained. The micro-fabrication techniques used to fabricate this force sensor has been described and the experiments preformed to successfully characterize each step in the fabrication have been explained. The fabrication of this force sensor is based on the facilities available at Michigan Technological University. There are some interesting and uncommon concepts in MEMS which have been observed during this fabrication. These concepts in MEMS which have been observed are shown in multiple SEM images.

State standardized testing has always been a tool to measure a school’s performance and to help evaluate school curriculum. However, with the school of choice legislation in 1992, the MEAP test became a measuring stick to grade schools by and a major tool in attracting school of choice students. Now, declining enrollment and a state budget struggling to stay out of the red have made school of choice students more important than ever before. MEAP scores have become the deciding factor in some cases. For the past five years, the Hancock Middle School staff has been working hard to improve their students’ MEAP scores in accordance with President Bush's “No Child Left Behind” legislation. In 2005, the school was awarded a grant that enabled staff to work for two years on writing and working towards school goals that were based on the improvement of MEAP scores in writing and math. As part of this effort, the school purchased an internet-based program geared at giving students practice on state content standards. This study examined the results of efforts by Hancock Middle School to help improve student scores in mathematics on the MEAP test through the use of an online program called “Study Island.” In the past, the program was used to remediate students, and as a review with an incentive at the end of the year for students completing a certain number of objectives. It had also been used as a review before upcoming MEAP testing in the fall. All of these methods may have helped a few students perform at an increased level on their standardized test, but the question remained of whether a sustained use of the program in a classroom setting would increase an understanding of concepts and performance on the MEAP for the masses. This study addressed this question. Student MEAP scores and Study Island data from experimental and comparison groups of students were compared to understand how a sustained use of Study Island in the classroom would impact student test scores on the MEAP. In addition, these data were analyzed to determine whether Study Island results provide a good indicator of students’ MEAP performance. The results of the study suggest that there were limited benefits related to sustained use of Study Island and gave some indications about the effectiveness of the mathematics curriculum at Hancock Middle School. These results and implications for instruction are discussed.

Traditional methods of measuring sound absorption coefficient and sound transmission loss of a material are time consuming. To overcome this limitation, normal incidence sound absorption and transmission loss measurement technique was developed. Unfortunately the equipment required for this task is equally expensive. Hence efforts are taken to develop a cost-effective equipment for measuring normal incidence sound absorption coefficient and transmission loss. An impedance tube capable of measure absorption coefficient and transmission loss is designed and built under a budget of $1500 for educational institutes. A background study is performed to gain knowledge and understanding of the normal incidence measurements technique. Based on the literature review, parameters involved such as tube material, source and microphone properties, sample holders, etc. are discussed in depth. Based on these parameters, design options are generated to meet the cost and functionality targets pre-assigned. After selection of materials and components, an impedance tube is built and tested using three fibrous absorption materials for absorption and a barrier for transmission loss performance. These measured results then compared with those obtained with the help of industry recognized Brüel & Kjær impedance tube. The results show performances are comparable, hence validation the new built tube.

Mt Etna's activity has increased during the last decade with a tendency towards more explosive eruptions that produce paroxysmal lava fountains. From January 2011 to April 2012, 25 lava fountaining episodes took place at Etna's New South-East Crater (NSEC). Improved understanding of the mechanism driving these explosive basaltic eruptions is needed to reduce volcanic hazards. This type of activity produces high sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions, associated with lava flows and ash fall-out, but to date the SO2 emissions associated with Etna's lava fountains have been poorly constrained. The Ultraviolet (UV) Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on NASA's Aura satellite and the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) on Aqua were used to measure the SO2 loadings. Ground-based data from the Observatoire de Physique du Globe de Clermont-Ferrand (OPGC) L-band Doppler radar, VOLDORAD 2B, used in collaboration with the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Catania (INGV-CT), also detected the associated ash plumes, giving precise timing and duration for the lava fountains. This study resulted in the first detailed analysis of the OMI and AIRS SO2 data for Etna's lava fountains during the 2011-2012 eruptive cycle. The HYSPLIT trajectory model is used to constrain the altitude of the observed SO2 clouds, and results show that the SO2 emission usually coincided with the lava fountain peak intensity as detected by VOLDORAD. The UV OMI and IR AIRS SO2 retrievals permit quantification of the SO2 loss rate in the volcanic SO2 clouds, many of which were tracked for several days after emission. A first attempt to quantitatively validate AIRS SO2 retrievals with OMI data revealed a good correlation for high altitude SO2 clouds. Using estimates of the emitted SO2 at the time each paroxysm, we observe a correlation with the inter-paroxysm repose time. We therefore suggest that our data set supports the collapsing foam (CF) model [1] as driving mechanism for the paroxysmal events at the NSEC. Using VOLDORAD-based estimates of the erupted magma mass, we observe a large excess of SO2 in the eruption clouds. Satellite measurements indicate that SO2 emissions from Etnean lava fountains can reach the lower stratosphere and hence could pose a hazard to aviation. [1] Parfitt E.A (2004). Time-optimal response is an important and sometimes necessary characteristic of dynamic systems for specific applications. Power converters are widely used in different electrical systems and their dynamic response will affect the whole system. In many electrical systems like microgrids or voltage regulators which supplies sensitive loads fast dynamic response is a must. Minimum time is the fastest converter to compensate the step output reference or load change. Boost converters as one of the wildly used power converters in the electrical systems are aimed to be controlled in optimal time in this study. Linear controllers are not able to provide the optimal response for a boost converter however they are still useful and functional for other applications like reference tracking or stabilization. To obtain the fastest possible response from boost converters, a nonlinear control approach based on the total energy of the system is studied in this research. Total energy of the system considers as the basis for developing the presented method, since it is easy and accurate to measure besides that the total energy of the system represents the actual operating condition of the boost converter. The detailed model of a boost converter is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink to achieve the time optimal response of the boost converter by applying the developed method. The simulation results confirmed the ability of the presented method to secure the time optimal response of the boost converter under four different scenarios.
