Potential energy curves have been computed for [C2H6]2+ ions and the results used to interpret the conspicuous absence of these ions in 2E mass spectra and in charge-stripping experiments. The energies and structures of geometry-optimized ground-state singlet and excited-state triplet [C2H6]2+ ions have been determined along with energies for different decomposition barriers and dissociation asymptotes. Although singlet and triplet [C2H6]2+ ions can exist as stable entities, they possess low energy barriers to decomposition. Vertical Franck-Condon transitions, involving electron impact ionization of ethane as well as charge-stripping collisions of [C2H6]+ ions, produce [C2H6]2+ ions which promptly dissociate since they are formed with energies in excess of various decomposition barriers. Appearance energies computed for doubly-charged ethane fragment ions are in accordance with experimental values.

Cross-sections have been determined for one- and two-electron transfer channels in the collisions of keV gas-phase doubly charged pyrrole ions with pyrrole molecules. Measured single and double electron transfer total cross-sections approximate 45 Å2 and 15 Å2, respectively. A combination of symmetric resonance charge exchange and multistate curve-crossing models has been invoked to describe these reactions.

The GAUSSIAN 2, GAUSSIAN 3, complete basis set-QB3, and complete basis set-APNO methods have been used to calculate ΔH∘ and ΔG∘ values for ionic clusters of hydronium and hydroxide ions complexed with water. Results for the clusters H3O+(H2O)n andOH−(H2O)n, where n=1–4 are reported in this paper, and compared against experimental values contained in the National Institutes of Standards and Technology (NIST) database. Agreement with experiment is excellent for the three ab initio methods for formation of these clusters. The high accuracy of these methods makes them reliable for calculating energetics for the formation of ionic clusters containing water. In addition this allows them to serve as a valuable check on the accuracy of experimental data reported in the NIST database, and makes them useful tools for addressing unresolved issues in atmospheric chemistry.

Potential energy curves have been calculated for CnH22+ (n = 2−9) ions and results have been compared with data on unimolecular charge-separation reactions obtained by Rabrenović and Beynon. Geometry-optimized, minimum energy, linear CnH22+ structures have been computed for ground and low-lying excited states. These carbodications exist in stable configurations with well depths greater than 3 eV. Decomposition pathways into singly charged fragment ions lead to products with computed kinetic energies in excess of 1 eV. A high degree of correlation exists between experimental information and results computed for linear CnH22+ structures having hydrogen atoms on each end. The exception involves C4H22+reactions where a low-lying doubly charged isomer must be invoked to rationalize the experimental data.

Doubly charged ion mass spectra of alkyl-substituted furans and pyrroles were obtained using a double-focusing magnetic mass spectrometer operated at 3.2 kV accelerating voltage. Molecular ions were the dominant species found in doubly charged spectra of lower molecular weight heterocydic compounds, whereas the spectra of the higher weight homologues were typified by abundant fragment ions from extensive decomposition. Measured doubly charged ionization and appearance energies ranged from 22.8 to 47.9 eV. Ionization energies were correlated with values calculated using self-consistent field–molecular orbital techniques. A multichannel diabatic curve-crossing model was developed to investigate the fundamental organic ion reactions responsible for development of doubly charged ion mass spectra. Probabilities for Landau–Zener type transitions between reactant and product curves were determined and used in the collision model to predict charge-transfer cross-sections, which compared favorably with experimental cross-sections obtained using time-of-flight techniques.

Unique features of doubly-charged stable organic ions are examined and the results correlated with experimental observations. Self-consistent field molecular orbital methods are used to compute structures and stabilities of CnH 2 2+ (n=2–9) ions which are prominent in electron impact ionization of hydrocarbon molecules. A simple curve crossing model is employed to rationalize charge transfer reactions of these ions.

This purpose of this project was to investigate the collision-induced dissociation of dipeptides in negative ion electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry, with a focus on the mechanism of the production of imidazole-type fragments not previously reported from the fragmentation of the dipeptides being studied. The majority of the dipeptides studied were alanine N-terminal or serine C-terminal dipeptides. All dipeptides were dissolved in 50:50 methanol:water, 3 mM ammonium formate. Collision-induced dissociation in the collision cell of a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer was used to fragment [M-H]- precursor ions. Accurate mass measurements confirmed the molecular formula of the imidazole-type fragments. Further MS/MS studies were performed to provide information about the fragmentation mechanism for the formation of the imidazole-type fragments. The m/z values of intermediate ions in the formation of the imidazole-type fragments were confirmed through second-generation product ion scans and precursor ion scans. More sophisticated instrumentation will be required to further probe the structure of the intermediate ions.
