The Economics and Nutritional Impacts of Food Assistance Policies and Programs

Recent evidence on malnutrition and poverty raise important questions on the role of food assistance policies and programs. In this review article, we examine evidence on the economic and nutritional impacts of international food assistance programs (FAPs) and policies. The returns on investments in FAPs are, on average, high but depend considerably on the targeting and cost structures as well as on food quality and role of complementary activities. We disaggregate findings into four classes of recipients. Returns to FAPs are highest for children under two. But, FAPs oriented towards early childhood interventions are less well funded than are interventions aimed at school-age children or at the broader, largely adult population even though available evidence indicates that these latter classes of interventions offer considerably lower average returns in economic, health, and nutrition terms. Nonetheless, FAP effectiveness in achieving any of several objectives varies with a range of key factors, including targeting, additionality, seasonality, timeliness, incentive effects, social acceptability and political economy considerations. Working With Families of Impaired Elderly

In this article, several approaches to working with the complexity of family relationships in later adulthood are described. Basic information on family forms and the pattern of family support for older adults is discussed. In addition, several examples of interventions with family members of older adults are reviewed. The goal of these activities is to increase the range of options available to older adults and their family caregivers.

Intervention Research Approaches

This article reviews the process of intervention research, with particular emphasis on interventions with and for older adults. First, we consider the context of intervention research: What are the resources and constraints that shape the process of intervention and research? Second, we outline a taxonomy of interventions, reflecting different combinations of level and timing of interventions. Third, we consider the types of research designs that are most appropriate in the different contexts of applied research.

Evaluating Counseling Outcomes

Defines the range of interventions considered under the rubric of counseling for the elderly. Uses evaluation of treatments for depression among the elderly to exemplify the current state of outcome-evaluation research.
