AN EXAMINATION OF THE STARS-PAC ANXIETY INTERVENTION PROGRAM AND ITS EFFECTS ON DECREASING SOCIAL AND TEST ANXIETY

The current case study examined the effects of the STARS-PAC anxiety reduction program on the social and test anxiety levels of a middle school student. The literature supporting the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy programs which incorporate methods such as those used in the STARS-PAC program were reviewed. The findings of this case study indicated decreased levels of overall anxiety during the intervention phase; however, the student’s test anxiety level displayed little improvement. Implications of the findings and for future research are discussed.

Life Events and Interdependent Lives: Implications for Research and Intervention

The central thesis of this article is that a single life event has the capacity to affect and change not one but several lives. This thesis is related to theory on attachment, roles, and convoys. The concept of life-event webs is introduced to capture the complex relations between individuals within networks such as families. Research challenges presented by the life-event web perspective include defining networks, assessing the impact of events on each member, and treating the web, not the individual, as the unit of analysis. The web perspective implies that intervention programs should be focused not on the individual but on the web.

Intervention Research Approaches

This article reviews the process of intervention research, with particular emphasis on interventions with and for older adults. First, we consider the context of intervention research: What are the resources and constraints that shape the process of intervention and research? Second, we outline a taxonomy of interventions, reflecting different combinations of level and timing of interventions. Third, we consider the types of research designs that are most appropriate in the different contexts of applied research.
