Culture's Calling: Mobile Phones, Gender, and the Making of an African Migrant Village in Lisbon

In this article, I explore how immigrants from the West African nation of Guinea-Bissau living in Portugal use mobile phones in their daily lives in Lisbon. Whereas one might assume that mobile phones and other new information technologies facilitate transnational communication between Africa and Portugal, the ethnographic fieldwork that I conducted in Lisbon from 1999 to 2003 revealed a different scenario. Instead, mobile phones as imagined and used by the Guinean immigrants I met in Lisbon revealed less about transnationalism and globalization than they did about constructing community and identity in a new locale. As Guinean immigrants in Portugal reconfigured their relationship to their former colonizers and struggled to make their way in a new, multicultural Europe, they used their mobile phones to engage local networks, shape local identities, and transform Lisbon's sprawl into an African migrant village. Here, I highlight the gendered dimensions of this process and contend that Guinean men's and women's varied uses of mobile phones in Lisbon underscore contrasting experiences of migration, mobility, and belonging.

Kinora and Double Kinora (Mutoscope)

The mutoscope is a cylindrical container ranging in size from a large, standing viewing station down to a smaller, more transportable unit. These machines hold hundreds of small cards with images printed on them attached to a circular core. This core is attached to an external crank which is turned by the viewer. The booklet turns, and the cards are held tensely bent into viewing position by a small metal piece. By reworking the thread of colonial initiation commonly found in French novels about Indochina, Nguyên Duc Giang's francophone novel Vingt ans (1940) draws upon novelistic and colonial intertexts to reflect upon the novel's role both in educating metropolitan readers and as a possible foundation for Franco-Vietnamese relations. Francophone and francophile, the young Vietnamese represented by this novel's Vietnamese narrator seem to exist outside of the colonial context; at the same time, a 'foreign' reader, presumably French, haunts the story through a dialogical, and unstable, relationship with the narrator. The latter provides the reader with familiar landmarks and immediately reshuffles them, thus transgressing the relationship that links him to the reader. In this way, the narrator reveals his ambiguity towards the reader and his/her culture, calling French hegemony into question.

The Chinese Currency and Global Rebalancing: A Discussion

Perceived to be substantially undervalued, the Chinese currency, the yuan, has attracted much attention in recent years, especially since the recession of 2008-2009. To remedy the situation, a proposal put forward recently by C. Fred Bergsten is noteworthy, for its impressive boldness in calling for drastic US policy actions, and for the potentially far-reaching impacts on the global rebalancing and recovery it may bring about. The purpose of this article is twofold: to assess the underlying analytical validity of this proposal and to explore its implications for the US, China and the rebalancing and recovery of the world economy.

Psychological Sense of Community: A New Construct for the Field of Management

This article introduces a new construct to the field of management called Psychological Sense of Community (PSOC). This is important because management scholars are calling for the creation of communities in organizations in an environment that lacks appropriate construct development. The aims of this article are threefold: (a) develop a working definition of PSOC via a review of the extant literature on PSOC from other disciplines with the goal of translating it into the domain of management, (b) synthesize findings from parallel literatures on the outcomes of PSOC with an eye toward exploring the relevance of such outcomes in management contexts, and (c) assess the value of PSOC as it relates to its uniqueness in relation to other prominent management constructs and its scope of applicability in a variety of management inquiry areas.
