Reports on left-lateralized abnormalities of component P300 of event-related brain potentials (ERP) in schizophrenics typically did not vary task difficulties. We collected 16-channel ERP in 13 chronic, medicated schizophrenics (25±4.9 years) and 13 matched controls in a visual P300 paradigm with targets defined by one or two stimulus dimensions (C1: color; C2: color and tilt); subjects key-pressed to targets. The mean target-ERP map landscapes were assessed numerically by the locations of the positive and negative map-area centroids. The centroids' time-space trajectories were searched for the P300 microstate landscape defined by the positive centroid posterior of the negative centroid. At P300 microstate centre latencies in C1, patients' maps tended to a right shift of the positive centroid (p<0.10); in C2 the anterior centroid was more posterior (p<0.07) and the posterior (positive) centroid more anterior (p<0.03), but without leftright difference. Duration of P300 microstate in C2 was shorter in patients (232 vs 347 ms;p<0.03) and the latency of maximal strength of P300 microstate increased significantly in patients (C1: 459 vs 376 ms; C2: 585 vs 525 ms). In summary only the one-dimensional task C1 supported left-sided abnormalities; the two-dimensional task C2 produced abnormal P300 microstate map landscapes in schizophrenics, but no abnormal lateralization. Thus, information processing involved clearly aberrant neural populations in schizophrenics, different when processing one and two stimulus dimensions. The lack of lateralization in the two-dimensional task supported the view that left-temporal abnormality in schizophrenics is only one of several task-dependent aberrations.

Fully controlled liquid injection and flow in hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) two-dimensional microchannel arrays based on on-chip integrated, low-voltage-driven micropumps are demonstrated. Our architecture exploits the surface-acoustic-wave (SAW) induced counterflow mechanism and the effect of nebulization anisotropies at crossing areas owing to lateral propagating SAWs. We show that by selectively exciting single or multiple SAWs, fluids can be drawn from their reservoirs and moved towards selected positions of a microchannel grid. Splitting of the main liquid flow is also demonstrated by exploiting multiple SAW beams. As a demonstrator, we show simultaneous filling of two orthogonal microchannels. The present results show that SAW micropumps are good candidates for truly integrated on-chip fluidic networks allowing liquid control in arbitrarily shaped two-dimensional microchannel arrays.

This paper describes informatics for cross-sample analysis with comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC) and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). GCxGC-HRMS analysis produces large data sets that are rich with information, but highly complex. The size of the data and volume of information requires automated processing for comprehensive cross-sample analysis, but the complexity poses a challenge for developing robust methods. The approach developed here analyzes GCxGC-HRMS data from multiple samples to extract a feature template that comprehensively captures the pattern of peaks detected in the retention-times plane. Then, for each sample chromatogram, the template is geometrically transformed to align with the detected peak pattern and generate a set of feature measurements for cross-sample analyses such as sample classification and biomarker discovery. The approach avoids the intractable problem of comprehensive peak matching by using a few reliable peaks for alignment and peak-based retention-plane windows to define comprehensive features that can be reliably matched for cross-sample analysis. The informatics are demonstrated with a set of 18 samples from breast-cancer tumors, each from different individuals, six each for Grades 1-3. The features allow classification that matches grading by a cancer pathologist with 78% success in leave-one-out cross-validation experiments. The HRMS signatures of the features of interest can be examined for determining elemental compositions and identifying compounds.

Benzodifuran-functionalised pyrene and anthracene fluorophores 1 and 2 were obtained in reasonable yields. Their single crystal structures, electrochemical, optical absorption, and fluorescence characteristics have been described. They show strong luminescence with high quantum yields of 0.53 for 1 and 0.48 for 2. Magnetic measurements for the 2D coordination polymer [Mn(Pht(Pyz(H2O)2]n (1), in which metal centres are linked together by pyrazine (Pyz) and 1,6-bridging o-phthalate ligand (Pht2-), revealed antiferromagnetic interactions between Mn(II) ions.

Sonography is an important diagnostic tool to examine the gastrointestinal tract of dogs with chronic diarrhea. Two-dimensional grayscale ultrasound parameters to assess for various enteropathies primarily focus on wall thickness and layering. Mild, generalized thickening of the intestinal wall with maintenance of the wall layering is common in inflammatory bowel disease. Quantitative and semi-quantitative spectral Doppler arterial waveform analysis can be utilized for various enteropathies, including inflammatory bowel disease and food allergies. Dogs with inflammatory bowel disease have inadequate hemodynamic responses during digestion of food. Dogs with food allergies have prolonged vasodilation and lower resistive and pulsatility indices after eating allergen-inducing foods.

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether measurements performed on conventional frontal radiographs are comparable to measurements performed on three-dimensional (3D) models of human skulls derived from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans and if the latter can be used in longitudinal studies. Cone beam computed tomography scans and conventional frontal cephalometric radiographs were made of 40 dry human skulls. From the CBCT scan a 3D model was constructed. Standard cephalometric software was used to identify landmarks and to calculate ratios and angles. The same operator identified 10 landmarks on both types of cephalometric radiographs, and on all images, five times with a time interval of 1 wk. Intra-observer reliability was acceptable for all measurements. There was a statistically significant and clinically relevant difference between measurements performed on conventional frontal radiographs and on 3D CBCT-derived models of the same skull. There was a clinically relevant difference between angular measurements performed on conventional frontal cephalometric radiographs, compared with measurements performed on 3D models constructed from CBCT scans. We therefore recommend that 3D models should not be used for longitudinal research in cases where there are only two-dimensional (2D) records from the past.
